It suggests that though the dis tinctions between modernity, modernization, and modernism are particularly complicated in the case of India, they remain crucial to a historical understanding of the ‘modern’ in all its senses. The article argues that the characteristic feature of Indian modernism in In dia is that it is manifestly social and historical rather than a hypostasis of the new as in the West. It contends that modernisms in India are deeply implicated in the construction of a secular national identity at home in the world, and in this respect answer a historical need to fashion a style for the modern as it is locally experienced. Keywords: modernism, India, modernization, modernity, national identity, hypostasis THE distinctions between modernity, modernization, and modernism are particularly com plicated in the case of India, but remain crucial to a historical understanding of the ‘mod ern’ in all its senses. Modernity, as a social and intellectual project, and modernization, as its means, are associated with the influence in India of Europe and of Enlightenment ra tionality from the eighteenth century onwards. Modernism, as an aesthetic, is far more limited in period and scope. Nevertheless, just as recent cultural criticism has proposed the existence of ‘alternative modernities’1 not native to the West, so too our attention has been drawn to ‘alternative modernisms’, or ‘modernisms at large’.2 The question of peri odicity, as of location, is complicated by the historical fact that modernism as an aesthetic was simultaneously restricted and elitist, and international and democratic. -

Krittibas, the magazine, just created a platform for those who practiced it. So critics marked them as decadents who wrote poems without any meaning and their works are nothing but hodge-podge. Later, when a new generation of readers admired these poets, particularly Sunil Gangopadhyay and Shakti Chattopadhyay, a new chapter was added in the history of Bengali Poetry. Nowadays, no one can ignore the contribution of the magazine and the ‘Shakti-Sunil’ duo. Without following any western ism, they just changed the surface of poetic culture. Remembering those days, their contribution seems much more effective for the budding poets. Their Confessional tone of poetry is an established genre and demands much attention. Shokti Chôttopaddhae) was a Bengali poet and writer, widely regarded as one of the greatest poet of 20th century Bengali literature. <b> Early Life </b> Shakti Chattopadhyay was born at Baharu village in modern-day South 24 Parganas district, Paschimbanga (West Bengal), India to Bamanath Chattopadhyay and Kamala Devi. He lost his father at the age of four and brought up by his maternal grandfather. He came to Bagbazar, Calcutta in 1948 and got admitted to Maharaja Cossimbazar Polytechnic School in class VIII. Here he was introduced to Marxism by a teacher. In 1949 he established Pragati Library and started a hand-written magazine, Pragati, which was soon changed into a printed one, changing the name to Bahnishikha. He passed Matriculation Examination in 1951 and got admitted to City College (Mirzapur branch) to study commerce as his maternal uncle, who was a businessman and also his guardian, promised him a job of an accountant. It was the same year when he got membership of the Communist Party of India (CPI). In 1953, he passed Intermediate Commerce Examination, but gave up studying commerce and got admitted to the Presidency College (now Presidency University, Kolkata) with Honours in Bengali literature but he did not appear in the examination. <b> Early writings </b> In 1956, he had to leave his maternal uncle’s home and moved to a slum at Ultadanga along with his mother and brother. -

2021-22 CITY COLLEGE Established 1881 With hundred and fifty years of élan and excellence, City College, Calcutta is a name in intelligentsia to boastfully enjoy the glory of the Bengal Renaissance which enlightened the entire country. Tradition and modernity, legacy and technology, history and vision have put the college as an institution on the educational map of the country creating an Indian Diasporas across the world. After the first NAAC accreditation in 2007, the college has been in gradual progression and takes various steps for implementing diverse value enhancement processes during the post accreditation period. The City College originated from a seabed of widespread educational movement in Bengal towards the latter part of the 19th century by the magnanimous members of the “ Sadharan Brahmo Samaj ”. Since then, the Brahmo Samaj Education Society (BSES) with its illustrious background in the field of education has been entrusted with an extraordinary role to elevate the City College to its zenith as a seat of learning. During the period when only a few Government educational institutes were present and those were exclusively for the children of rich and well off families and studying in the Government schools and colleges were the day-dream of the innumerable students belonging to under privileged families, BSES came forward and started its journey by establishing number of educational institutions for the marginalized middle class of Bengal. The dream came true with the establishment of City College which started as a High school by Anandamohan Bose, the first Wrangler of Bengal, on 6th January 1879. The wholehearted support and assistance from Pandit Shivnath Shastri and Rastraguru Surendranath Bandyopadhyay made the road smooth for establishing the school. -

humanities Article The Beat Generation Meets the Hungry Generation: U.S.—Calcutta Networks and the 1960s “Revolt of the Personal” Steven Belletto Department of English, Lafayette College, Easton, PA 18042, USA; [email protected] Received: 15 October 2018; Accepted: 21 December 2018; Published: 2 January 2019 Abstract: This essay explores the relationship between the U.S.-based Beat literary movement and the Hungry Generation literary movement centered in and around Calcutta, India, in the early 1960s. It discusses a trip Allen Ginsberg and Peter Orlovsky took to India in 1962, where they met writers associated with the Hungry Generation. It further explains how Lawrence Ferlinghetti, owner of City Lights Books in San Francisco, was inspired to start a new literary magazine, City Lights Journal, by Ginsberg’s letters from India, which included work by Hungry Generation writers. The essay shows how City Lights Journal packaged the Hungry Generation writers as the Indian wing of the Beat movement, and focuses in particular on the work of Malay Roy Choudhury, the founder of the Hungry Generation who had been prosecuted for obscenity for his poem “Stark Electric Jesus”. The essay emphasizes in particular the close relationship between aesthetics and politics in Hungry Generation writing, and suggests that Ginsberg’s own mid-1960s turn to political activism via the imagination is reminiscent of strategies employed by Hungry Generation writers.
