[email protected] ABSTRACT The estimation of past sea-ice cover has been improved recently by advances in diatom ecology, biogeography, and taxonomy and in the satellite imagery of sea ice. Diatoms live in and around sea ice, are sensitive to sea ice, and are widely distributed as microfossils in Southern Ocean sediments; thus, they provide the best tool available for re- constructing sea-ice cover and oceano- graphic features in Antarctic regions. New approaches use diatoms to recon- struct sea ice through the late Quater- Divergent winter pack ice illustrating areas of open water between floes that have started to refreeze with a thin cover of nilas. Recent ecological studies have shown that sea-ice diatom communities are nary from core sites in the Southern differentiated by variations in the type of sea ice formed and the changes that occur over the seasonal Ocean. Die Hauptattraktion stellt eine einzigartige Sammlung von Pflanzenmodellen aus Glas dar. Prof. George Lincoln Goodale, der erste Direktor des Botanischen Museums von Harvard, wollte in den frühen 80er Jahren des 19. Jahr hunderts permanente Pflanzenmodelle aus Glas. Sie sollten zum einen die Schönheit des Pflanzenreichs in möglichst realistischer Form abbilden und zum anderen das ganze Jahr über zu Unterrichtszwecken genutzt werden. Ihm gelang es die beiden äußerst talentierten deutschen Glaskünstler, die sich bereits durch die Herstellung sehr realistischer Glasmodelle von marinen Invertebraten (wie etwa Quallen und See anemonen) einen Namen gemacht hatten, Leopold und seinen Sohn Rudolf Blaschka zur Herstellung von Pflanzen aus Glas zu überzeugen. Die Modelle wurden in den Jah ren 1886 bis 1936 exklusiv für die Harvard Universität mit damals üblichen Techniken gefertigt. Sie versetzten von da an den Betrachter durch ihre unbeschreibliche Schön heit und Detailtreue in großes Erstaunen. Die Finanzierung dieses Mammutprojekts übernahm Elizabeth C. Beginning with 44 Founding Fellows, the membership has grown to the planned maximum of 250 professional engineers, elected on the basis of their distinguished careers, and of their service and contributions to society, to the country and to the engineering profession. Over its brief 15-year history, the Academy has independently initiated several major studies, drawing on the expertise of its volunteer members. It has issued eight reports dealing with the engineering education, engineering research, the evolution of the engineering profession and other areas of direct importance to the nation. -

It describes (as applicable) fund purpose and scope the history of a fund, donor intent, the purposes for which the fund may and may not be used, the Board’s goals for the fund, administrative operating criteria, and financial operating criteria. A Fund Charter demonstrates the Board’s commitment to prudent management of the Foundation’s resources and compliance with applicable accounting and legal standards. Within the framework of AEG Foundation governance, a Fund Charter is a policy document that may be amended or interpreted by the Board through a simple majority vote. A Fund Charter may refer to other documents that further describe the history, nature, and operations of a fund. II). The other members of the working group were Peter Galison (Harvard University, USA), Caroline A. Jones (MIT, USA and Wissenschafts- kolleg zu Berlin, Germany), Joseph Koerner (University College London, UK), Antoine Picon (Ecole des Ponts et Chausées, Paris, France), Joel Snyder (University of Chicago, USA), Simon Schaffer (University of Cambridge, UK), and Norton Wise (UCLA, USA). The group met three times in Berlin to discuss various versions of members’ essays and, more generally, the place of material culture in the history of science and the history of art. The nine essays, including the two that appear here as a preprint, will be published as a volume by Zone Books. A complete table of contents is appended to this preprint. The aim of the research project was to go beyond cases of historical interactions between art and science to investigate tools (e.g. drawing) and challenges (e.g. representation) common to both. In the case of the working group on “Things that Talk”, the departure point was a shared perplexity about how to capture the thingness of things in our respective disciplines. -

Canadian Engineering History: A Thumbnail Sketch by Andrew H. (Drew) Wilson, FCAE May 2020 Prepared at the request of the President of the Canadian Academy of Engineering Preamble Engineering can be, and has been, defined in a variety of ways. A very early definition was that it is “the art of directing the great source of power in Nature for the use and convenience of people.” Nowadays, it has to be considered as an informed activity performed by purpose-trained practitioners in regard to the design, production and maintenance of machinery, constructions, processes and devices that is being augmented constantly by experience, research, and information that extends beyond science and technology and requires some understanding of economics and business, the law, the social sciences, and politics, as well as an appreciation of the past as well as the future. This paper has been written especially for students of engineering, to introduce them to some of the past events and achievements in engineering activity in Canada. The text is relatively short and makes use of information that has already appeared in other, longer stories of Canadian engineering. For the purposes of this paper, however, some of Newfoundland and Labrador’s engineering achievements prior to 1949 have been included. The illustrations are also few in number, but a bibliography has been appended to encourage further reading. To provide some background to the events and achievements, some economic, social and political information has been included. To help accommodate its ‘thumbnail’ description, this paper omits specific references to Canadian achievements abroad, to engineering in the Armed Forces, and to some of the companies with obvious engineering connections. -

ROBERT FERGUSON LEGGET CC, BEng, MEng(L'pool), DEng, DGSc, LLD, DSc, FRSC, FICE Robert Legget, distinguished civil engineer, geologist, author and historian, died on 17th April 1994 in Ottawa, Canada at the age of 89. He was born in Liverpool, on 29th September 1904, the son of Scottish parents, was educated at the Merchant Taylor's School, Great Crosby, and graduated from the University of Liverpool in 1925 with a First Class Honours BEng degree in Civil Engineering followed by a Master of Engineering degree in 1927. From 1925 to 1929 he was an Assistant Engineer with consulting civil engineers, Meik and Buchanan, later Sir William Halcrow and Partners and was engaged on the design of hydro power plants in Scotland, Greece, Italy and Finland, his principal involvement being with the Lochaber hydro power scheme which included what was then the longest tunnel in the world. In order to widen his experience, he moved to Canada in 1929 to take up an appointment as an Engineer with the Power Corporation of Canada. He maintained his interest in power generation as Resident Engineer on the construction of the Upper Notch Hydro Plant, the largest automatic plant in Canada. In 1932 he joined the Canadian Sheet Piling Co Ltd, and as their Engineer was responsible for the design and construction of sheet piling on many major construction projects across Canada. During his eleven years in engineering practice he had been actively developing his interests in geology and soils, and in particular with the growing new subject of soil mechanics dealing with the load bearing characteristics of soils and rocks. -

Memorial to Robert Ferguson Legget 1904-1994 ALLEN W. HATHEWAY Department of Geological & Petroleum Engineering, School o f Mines & Metallurgy University o f Missouri, Rolla, Missouri 65401-0249 Robert Ferguson Legget, a 20th century civil engineer extraordinaire, changed the face of applied geology. His legacy shows that civil engineers must embrace the appli cation of geology to their projects; and to do less is to neglect the standard of practice. Robert is remembered by the many who both knew him and knew of him as an engi neering geologist, so influential in tenaciously collecting, examining, lecturing, and writing of a world of examples, and so graciously stating all of this for the record. Robert Legget was the epitome of the practicing pro fessional person, both engineer and geologist. Gracious in all manner of contact with others, he was a 19th century gentleman comfortably engaging 20th century technolo gies and devoting his career to promoting the application of geology to all aspects of human endeavor. Robert was even a little desperate about preparing us to employ the best geologic knowledge to meet the challenges of the 21st century. On the basis of his ruddy-cheeked health, ease of movement, and strong voice, we all took for granted that he would be here with us to greet the year 2000. Robert was bom in Liverpool of Scottish parents, Donald and Mary Thompson Legget, on September 29, 1904. On graduation from Liverpool University (first class honors in civil engineering) in 1925, he worked for four years with C. S. Meik and Buchanan, Consulting Engi neers, of Westminster, completing a master’s degree in engineering in 1927.
