Steven Soderbergh (Logan Lucky, The Laundromat) and Gregory Jacobs (The Laundromat, Magic Mike XXL) also serve as executive producers. “Now Apocalypse” stars Avan Jogia (“Tut,” “Twisted”) as Ulysses, who is struggling to figure out his life in the surreal and bewildering city of Los Angeles. Kelli Berglund (“Lab Rats,” “Dolly Parton’s Christmas of Many Colors”) stars as Carly, Beau Mirchoff (“Awkward,” “The Fosters”) as Ford, and Roxane Mesquida (Kaboom, “Gossip Girl”) as Severine, all of whom are on quests pursuing love, sex and fame. Between sexual and romantic dating-app adventures, Ulysses grows increasingly troubled as foreboding, premonitory dreams make him wonder if some kind of dark and monstrous conspiracy is going on — or if he is just smoking too much weed. “Now Apocalypse” will make its world premiere as an Official Selection of the 2019 Sundance Film Festival. Araki directed all 10 episodes and co-wrote the series with author and Vogue.com sex columnist Karley Sciortino, who is also the creator and host of “Slutever” on Viceland. Sciortino also serves as consulting producer. *** Please note: these production notes are for reference only and may contain spoilers. We would appreciate you not revealing the characters’ secrets in editorial or social postings without proper warning. The film is under embargo until Wednesday, February 21 at 10:30pm CET / 4:30pm EST / 1:30pm PST. Thank you. *** Short Synopsis A young woman is involuntarily committed to a mental institution where she is confronted by her greatest fear - but is it real or is it a product of her delusion? Long Synopsis Making a startling trip into thriller territory with Unsane, director Steven Soderbergh plunges audiences into the suspense and drama of a resilient woman’s (Claire Foy, The Crown) fight to reclaim her freedom even as she risks her own sanity. Scarred from the trauma of being stalked, quick-witted Sawyer Valentini (portrayed by Ms. Foy) has relocated from Boston to Pennsylvania for a new life. As her mother Angela (Academy Award nominee Amy Irving) misses her back home and her office job is hardly an ideal employment opportunity, Sawyer remains on edge following her two years of being terrorized. To consult with a therapist, she goes for follow-up treatment at the Highland Creek Behavioral Center. Sawyer’s initial therapy session at the suburban complex run by clinician Ashley Brighterhouse (Aimée Mullins, Stranger Things) progresses well — until she unwittingly signs herself in for voluntary 24-hour commitment. Unable to leave the premises, Sawyer finds herself in close quarters with previously committed hellion Violet (Juno Temple, The Dark Knight Rises) and savvy Nate (Jay Pharoah, Saturday Night Live), who is battling an opioid addiction.

  • Entrepreneurship and Appropriation in the Magic Mike Series," Lateral 6.1 (2017)
Broderick Chow, "Every Little Thing He Does: Entrepreneurship and Appropriation in the Magic Mike Series," Lateral 6.1 (2017). https://doi.org/10.25158/L6.1.3 This content is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License. Copyright is retained by authors. Issue 6.1 (Spring 2017) Every Little Thing He Does: Entrepreneurship and Appropriation in the Magic Mike Series Broderick Chow ABSTRACT This essay analyses the theatricalized performance of stripping in the popular lms Magic Mike (2013; dir. Steven Soderbergh) and its sequel, Magic Mike XXL (2015; dir. Gregory Jacobs). Following a critical dance studies approach that attends to the intersection of body and gesture with socio-political, historical, and economic structures, I suggest theatricalized sexual labour in these lms reveals the racial exclusions from the ideology of entrepreneurship. Considering the appropriation of black aesthetics in Magic Mike XXL’s performances of striptease, the lm seeks to evaporate the spectre of race, that is, the way the white fantasy of the entrepreneurial subject is supported by the appropriation of racialized and especially black labour. The Magic Mike movies are all about work. In the rst lm, Magic Mike (2012), director Steven Soderbergh’s concern is the post-industrial service economy, and the way it obliges protagonist Mike Lane (Channing Tatum) to take on many insecure jobs. It is on a roong contract that Mike meets young Adam (Alex Pettyfer), who he quickly recruits to another job, stripping for women at a club called XQuisite. By aligning striptease with other precarious jobs Soderbergh overlaps the fantasy of unattainable masculinity with the fantasy of vocational labor, which made the lm fodder for internet think-pieces—the combination of pecs, pop-and-lock and pop-Marxism was irresistible.1 At the same time, the Magic Mike movies are all about sex, as shown by the sequel, Magic Mike XXL (2015, directed by Gregory Jacobs).

  • Heart of Darkness and Apocalypse Now, Na Die Geliefde Land and Promised Land
POLYPHONIC CONVERSATIONS BETWEEN NOVEL AND FILM: HEART OF DARKNESS AND APOCALYPSE NOW, NA DIE GELIEFDE LAND AND PROMISED LAND Toinette Badenhorst-Roux Hons. B.A. Dissertation submitted for the degree Master of Arts in Linguistics and Literary Theory at the North-West University Supervisor: Prof. H.M. Viljoen Co-supervisor: Prof. A.M. de Lange 2006 Potchefstroom Campus Abstract This dissertation attempts a Bakhtinian analysis of the polyphonic dialogue between Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now, Karel Schoeman's Na die Geliefde Land and Jason Xenopoulos' Promised Land. Specific Bakthinian concepts are employed to determine whether the films are "apt" adaptations of the literary texts; how the stylistically hybrid texts engage in conversation with different movements, genres and trends; how the polyphonic conversations between different texts and discourses, such as literature and film, or colonialism and postcolonialism, can provide insight into the variety of discourses, textual and ideological, of a postcolonial, post-apartheid South Africa; and how identity crises experienced by key characters can be explained using the notions of hybridity, "The Marginal Man" and liminality. All four texts have key characters that experience identity crises that spring from cultural hybridity; their cultural hybridity has the potential to either render them marginally stagnant or lead them to liminally active participation within their imagined communities. This dissertation argues that even though there are major differences between the films and the literary texts they are based upon, they are relevant to a specific target audience and therefore enrich the ur-texts. Salient characteristics of realism, symbolism, impressionism, modernism, postmodernism, postcolonialism and the apocalyptic dialogise one another within the four texts, thereby liberating the texts from one authorial reading.
