Vehicle Safety Ratings Estimated from Police Reported Crash Data: 2006 Update
VEHICLE SAFETY RATINGS ESTIMATED FROM POLICE REPORTED CRASH DATA: 2006 UPDATE AUSTRALIAN AND NEW ZEALAND CRASHES DURING 1987-2004 by Stuart Newstead Linda Watson & Max Cameron Report No. 248 June 2006 Project Sponsored By ii MONASH UNIVERSITY ACCIDENT RESEARCH CENTRE MONASH UNIVERSITY ACCIDENT RESEARCH CENTRE REPORT DOCUMENTATION PAGE Report No. Report Date ISBN Pages 248 June 2006 0 7326 2318 9 90 + Appendices Title and sub-title: VEHICLE SAFETY RATINGS ESTIMATED FROM POLICE REPORTED CRASH DATA: 2006 UPDATE AUSTRALIAN AND NEW ZEALAND CRASHES DURING 1987-2004 Author(s) Type of Report & Period Covered Newstead, S.V., Cameron, M.H. and Watson, L.M. Summary Report, 1982-2004 Sponsoring Organisations - This project was funded as contract research by the following organisations: Road Traffic Authority of NSW, Royal Automobile Club of Victoria Ltd, NRMA Ltd, VicRoads, Royal Automobile Club of Western Australia Ltd, Transport Accident Commission and Land Transport New Zealand, the Road Safety Council of Western Australia, the New Zealand Automobile Association and by a grant from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau Abstract: Crashworthiness ratings measure the relative safety of vehicles in preventing severe injury to their own drivers in crashes whilst aggressivity ratings measure the serious injury risk vehicles pose to drivers of other vehicles and unprotected road users such as pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists. Updated crashworthiness ratings and aggressivity ratings for 1982- 2004 model vehicles were estimated based on data on crashes in Victoria and New South Wales during 1987-2004 and in Queensland, Western Australia and New Zealand during 1991-2004. Both crashworthiness and aggressivity were measured by a combination of injury severity (the risk of death or serious injury given an injury was sustained) and injury risk (the risk of injury given crash involvement). -
SKF Timing Belt Kits Technical Overview
Catalog 457702 2010 SKF Timing Belt Kits Technical overview In today’s modern automotive engines, there has been a quiet revolution. The need to run more auxiliary equipment such as water pumps or injection pumps, combined with efficiency demands and noise reduction, has caused new timing belt and tensioner systems to be developed. At first, tensioners were of a fixed nature, usually of metal design. They were simple to install: just set tension and tighten. Today, tensioners more likely include an internal spring or external damper, and non-metallic components are becoming more common. This illustration provides an overview of a modern timing belt and tensioner system. Engine-front wheel drive Belt Camshaft pulley tensioner unit Timing belt Injection pump pulley Water pump pulley Idler pulley Crankshaft The crankshaft drives the camshaft(s) and actuates the valves via a belt or a chain. Due to its advantages compared with those of a chain, namely reduced space, as well as lighter and quieter running, the timing belt is widely used by many car manufacturers. Belt tensioner unit (TBT) Idler pulley The belt tensioner unit sets the right tension and provides guidance for the belt. The idler pulley is fixed and allows the belt to be correctly wound around the driven component. The adjustment of tension during mounting is achieved by means of an eccentric Main designs currently used are shown here: or by means of a spring acting against a rear plate. The automatic belt tensioner unit, with its built-in spring and friction system, maintains a constant tension of the belt while the engine is running. -

Daimler-Chrysler-Vehicle-Problems
Dodge Chrysler Vehicles - Poor Quality Reliability Safety Defects Page 1 of 17 DAIMLERCHRYSLER DODGE CHRYSLER VEHICLES - IMPORTANT CONSUMER INFORMATION BEFORE YOU BUY Dodge, Chrysler formerly DaimlerChrysler has had a history of excessive vehicle quality issues, safety defects and poor service. This continued despite the 1998 Chrysler merger with Daimler Benz and constant claims by DaimlerChrysler that this was a significant benefit to consumers. If anything, given the dramatic quality decline, it seems Mercedes Benz may have embraced some of the cost cutting quality standards at Chrysler to increase overall profitability. The problems continue despite stylish new vehicles and claims of new stringent quality standards by Chrysler to regain consumer confidence. Chrysler continues to deceive consumers regarding known potentially life threatening vehicle defects such as unsafe Seatbelts and Steering which continue to put consumer lives at risk every day. Chrysler still refuses to recall several common serious safety defects that cannot be absolved through mergers and buyouts. Chrysler continues to reduce its warranty expense through an aggressive refusal to honor many valid warranty claims while blaming the consumer whenever possible, such as defective engines where on schedule oil changes can be proven. Consumers often attribute this to being a dealer problem while failing to recognize that this is because Chrysler pressures dealers to keep warranty costs to a minimum, even for known problems and defects. Chrysler will do everything it can to avoid covering common problems under warranty whenever possible by blaming consumers or claiming issues cannot be duplicated. We believe Chrysler is the most negligent, deceptive, misleading and arrogant automobile manufacturer that does not deserve your business. -

As part of its mission to reduce fatalities and injuries, since model year 2001 NHTSA has included rollover information as part of its NCAP ratings. One of the primary means of assessing rollover risk is the static stability factor (SSF), a measurement of a vehicle’s resistance to rollover. The higher the SSF, the lower the rollover risk. -
