I am currently collaborating with Stockton University (New Jersey, USA) regarding pedagogical approaches (for schools) toward computer programming, problem solving and innovative technology. The university has invited me to conduct workshops for the academic staff. Both universities are contributing towards the costs of the trip, that took place 2nd and 3rd week of March 2016. I have signed a contract with Stockton University regarding the workshops and any other events that I am expected to be part of. I have purchased Lego Mindstorms robots and I am currently researching the use of Lego Mindstorms as well as other innovative tools for teaching-and-learning computer programming. I have led research projects regarding the use of Lego Mindstorms robots as an innovative tool for learning computer programming within the university as well as at a school.

Presented at various workshops with the University of Johannesburg (2013 – 2014) regarding my PhD work.

Examiner for ICT module at Lyceum College.

Advisor to Independent Institute of Education (Pty) Ltd. Advtech House for a new development software program.

External examiner for master’s dissertations.

Reviewer for journal articles in the Independent Journal for Teaching and Learning that forms part of the Independent Institution for Education (IIE)

Invited to be part of the UJ Accelerated Academic Mentoring Programme (AAMP)

Have applied to Higher Education Academy (HEA) as an international applicant for recognition of teaching

EXTERNAL FUNDING: I received external funding through Stockton University, New Jersey, USA for 2016.

I have received a 3 year Thuthuka bursary (2013 – 2015) with the amounts of South African rands totaling R220 000.00. This bursary has provided me with opportunities to purchase equipment and network by going to conferences both locally and overseas.

I was awarded a National Research Fund (NRF) bursary for the year 2015 with an amount of R116 000.00 used towards payment of instructors so that I could take a sabbatical to complete my PhD dissertation.

PHD DISSERTATION Research indicates that students enrolled for first year computer ABSTRACT: programming (CS1) courses often perform poorly. The work presented here emerged from an observation that students, enrolled at a higher education institution in Johannesburg, South Africa, consistently performed poorly in the CS1 course that they were enrolled for. The purpose of the research was to contextualise a pedagogical design for the local circumstances of our students, many of whom come from educational backgrounds that, in South Africa, are often referred to as ‘previously disadvantaged’. This stems largely from the historical legacy of the Apartheid system of the country.

The problem of what makes for an emerging pedagogy when attending to the learning needs of under-prepared students enrolled for a CS1 course guided the research, which attempted to answer the central research question: How can CS1 courses be pedagogically designed to improve the performance of novice programmers?

A research-driven methodology was adopted and design-based research (DBR) informed the development of a new pedagogy for teaching CS1 courses. The cyclical nature of DBR provided a vehicle through which data was continuously collected about the students’ experiences and also their performances over a two-year period (two iterative cycles).

The outcomes of this inquiry is an approach to teaching-and- learning CS1 courses, grounded in the principles of social constructivist theories and situated in an authentic technology- driven environment. Although further research is needed in order to test the design more rigorously, results to date are promising.
