We will understand it best only when we see an artisan carving a piece of wood, a well-chosen one, with an old knife, inherited from his father. Home at master Șerban, on the hills of Nereju, where the landscape seems out of a fairy tale, masks occupy an important place, hung on walls, among many diplomas, posters and photos of his father, a renowned sculptor, whose works can be seen at the Art Galleries in Focșani.

Șerban is a warm, welcoming man, he smiles when he tells us how he goes to festivals around the country, by minibus or by train, carrying the masks in suitcases or bags. He looks proudly at a large wooden mask, with ram’s horns, hung on the wall, next to the Țara Vrancei flag.

He says wooden masks are more dif- ficult to make, that he only makes one every day, whereas it is easier to make masks out of goatskin or sheep-

She was born on 25 November 1972, in Vadu Izei. She learned the craft from her mother, as well as choosing carpets.

In 1995 she started experimenting with vegetable dyes and then made carpets in the traditional style of Maramureş.

She dyes wool with the plants she picks and prepares beforehand for the time when she starts dying the wool from the Turcana sheep.

She took a training course on fabrics and dying wool, supported by the O.V.R. “Agro-Tur-Art” Foundation and the PHARE Rural tourism programme, coordi- nated by O.V.R.

In 1997, supported by O.V.R. International, she ope- ned a traditional dyeing workshop, for visitors inte- rested in discovering the old custom of weaving at the loom and vegetable dyeing. Ioan Borlean, painter of icons on glass

He was born on 15 March 1958, in Vadu Izei. Mostly self-taught, a sensible, curious and polyvalent person, he dedicated his life to art, where he has preserved the entire spi- rituality and luminous modesty of old Ma- ramureş. His paintings preserve the tradi- tions of his native village.

He has had countless exhibitions in Belgium, France, England and Romania. His icons can also be found in private collections in Roma- nia, Germany, England, Belgium, the United States, , France, Italy or Japan.

Ioan Borlean is also an active member of the “Ţara Maramureşului” Association, which promotes the development of Maramureş, the land of dances, generosity and dynamics, which has preserved its extraordinary tradi- tional cultural heritage.

Here, tradition is considered a resource for the future, and not a relic, which is why Ţara Maramureşului can evolve without losing its soul.
