    EDUCATION OF POOR GIRLS IN NORTH WEST ENGLAND c1780 to 1860: A STUDY OF WARRINGTON AND CHESTER by Joyce Valerie Ireland A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Philosophy at the University of Central Lancashire September 2005 EDUCATION OF POOR GIRLS IN NORTH WEST ENGLAND cll8Oto 1860 A STUDY OF WARRINGTON AND CHESTER ABSTRACT This study is an attempt to discover what provision there was in North West England in the early nineteenth century for the education of poor girls, using a comparative study of two towns, Warrington and Chester. The existing literature reviewed is quite extensive on the education of the poor generally but there is little that refers specifically to girls. Some of it was useful as background and provided a national framework. In order to describe the context for the study a brief account of early provision for the poor is included. A number of the schools existing in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries continued into the nineteenth and occasionally even into the twentieth centuries and their records became the source material for this study. The eighteenth century and the early nineteenth century were marked by fluctuating fortunes in education, and there was a flurry of activity to revive the schools in both towns in the early nineteenth century. The local archives in the Chester/Cheshire Record Office contain minute books, account books and visitors' books for the Chester Blue Girls' school, Sunday and Working schools, the latter consolidated into one girls' school in 1816, all covering much of the nineteenth century.

See page three for the full report Executive Head Teacher’s Message Dear Parent/Guardian, As we approach the Easter break and the end of another successful term, I must first congratulate the Year 11 and Post 16 students on their maturity, commitment and hard work as we approach the summer public examinations. It is the staff and students that make our school a success and I am pleased to share that we are still on track for the school to be performing above the national average again this year. The attitude of our young people to learning is impressive and I am proud of how students have been working to support each other during this busy period, as a vibrant learning community. I would like to reassure parents at this busy exam preparation time that we are ensuring that there is high support for the students as well as challenge and our focus has been very much on student’s wellbeing as well as their learning, which has included offering student’s reward treats along the way! I would also like to take the time in advance to thank all of the staff and students who have signed up for the Easter revision sessions. This additional supported learning will help the students to achieve their best. As well as a high focus on learning, you will see in this publication that our careers programme is an important aspect of school life for all year groups, it has been a busy term for this area and we are extremely grateful for the ongoing support we receive from local employers, UCAS, colleges and universities, which offer support to the Year 11 and Post 16 students as they move on to the next stage of their education.

    Admissions Policy for Accrington Academy Preamble: 1. This document sets out the proposed arrangements for Accrington Academy, throughout this document referred to as “the Academy”. These arrangements are without prejudice to the provisions of Annex B to the Master Agreement. The document forms an annex to the Supplemental Agreement between United Learning Trust (‘ULT’) and the Secretary of State. References in this document to “parents” include guardians and carers. 2. The Academy will comply with all relevant provisions of the statutory codes on admissions (the School Admissions Code and the School Admission Appeals Code of Practice) as they apply at any given time to maintained schools and with the law on admissions as it applies to maintained schools. Reference in the codes to admission authorities shall be deemed to be references to ULT. References to “the LA” shall be deemed to be references to Lancashire County Council and references to “the Admissions Forum” to be to the Lancashire admissions Forum. In particular, the Academy will take part in the Admissions Forum set up by the LA and have regard to its advice; and will participate in the co-ordinated admission arrangements operated by the LA. 3. Notwithstanding these arrangements, the Secretary of State may direct the Academy to admit a named pupil to the Academy on application from an LA. Before doing so the Secretary of State will consult the Academy. Admission Arrangements to be Approved by Secretary of State 4. At our meeting in October we learned that Suma Din our Muslim deputy had become a school governor and would no longer fulfil her role with SACRE. However, her legacy to us is her book published by the Institute of Education Press entitled ‘Muslim Mothers and their children’s schooling.’ See SACRED 7, for a review.
