Hopefully the weather will settle again in the next few weeks for long enough to allow the remaining crops to be harvested with as little stress as possible. In the meantime I’m sure many of you will be pressing on with hedge trimming to make up for lost time! Although harvest is yet to be fully completed for some, the commencement of autumn drilling is not far away and it is important to note the changes to Greening requirements which will become effective in the 2018 Basic Payment Scheme year, commencing 1st January 2018. The most significant change is that the use of Plant Protection Products (PPPs) will be prohibited on the following land if it is declared as an Ecological Focus Area: Fallow land Catch or cover crops Nitrogen fixing crops The ban on PPPs applies from the time of sowing the crop, even if this is before the start of the 2018 BPS year, up until the crop is harvested, and the ban also applies to seed dressings. Thus if you usually use any of the above land covers to meet your EFA greening requirements and you usually use PPPs on them, it is important to think ahead this autumn to ensure that you will comply with the new greening regulations. This could mean that you change the way you meet your greening requirements, for example by using hedgerows as Ecological Focus Areas instead for the next BPS year. If you would like any advice on how best to meet your greening requirements on your farm please contact your local Kivells office and we will do all that we can to help. Recently, the Kivells team have been busy undertaking LEADER grant applications on behalf of our farming clients who are looking to grow their businesses. Under the LEADER programme up to 40% grant funding is available for projects that aim to enhance farm productivity, increase rural tourism or involve food processing. The application process comprises two stages. The first stage involves the submission of a expression of interest form to decipher whether the project is suitable in principle, ie. whether the project meets the priorities of the Local Action Group (LAG) that the business is situated in. Priorities will vary slightly from LAG to LAG. If successful the applicant will be invited to submit the second stage of the application whereby proposals will be scrutinised and considered in careful detail. Examples of projects eligible for funding under farm productivity include: machinery to improve the efficiency of use of resources (water, fertiliser, energy) eg. LED lighting in livestock buildings, or machinery to reduce the impact on soil eg. low tillage drills Investments to mechanise production eg. robotic milking parlours Equipment to improve animal welfare eg. EID readers, mobile livestock handling systems, enhanced cattle crush systems or calving detectors The deadline for submitting expression of interest forms is 31st January 2017, however if you are considering applying we would advise that you begin the process sooner rather than later due to the level of detail required as part of the application. If you would like more information or any assistance with the application process please do contact your local Kivells professional office. On a final note, Michaelmas is now creeping up on us and so for many of you farming land on agricultural tenancies rent reviews will soon be taking place if notice was served last year. The Kivells team have a wealth of experience in dealing with rent reviews and all landlord - tenant matters, and regularly act for both landlords and tenants across the south west.

The complete programme comprises approximately 950 sites covering 4230 km of river and 27 km of canal. The full programme is completed in two years, with half the sites surveyed in any one year. Twenty-two key sites are visited every year, to assess annual changes? seven of the sites are solely to monitor discharges from sewage treatment works (STWs) and are not used for river quality classification. The complete programme matches the routine chemical monitoring programme, but includes additional sites so that all reaches which had been assigned River Quality Objectives are monitored. Fourteen sites, originally programmed for the 1993 survey, are also to be surveyed in 1992 to support the Operational Investigation into the impact of the Wheal Jane pollution incident on the River Carnon. Macro-invertebrates are sampled three times in the year; in Spring, Summer and Autumn. Habitat features and macrophytes are recorded once. It’s our job to look after your environment and make it a better place - foryou, and for future generations. Your environment is the airyou breathe, the wateryou drink and the ground you walk on. However, like so many other unbelievable aspects of the flash floods of 16 August 2004, that is just what happened. That crowds of residents and visitors gathered round the harbour on May Day to celebrate the village’s regeneration and the re-opening of nearly all the affected businesses, is testimony to the spirit and determination of the people of Boscastle. The Environment Agency was pleased to participate and to have been able to lend support to the event, which also marked the completion of our new culvert for the River Jordan and the other remedial work.
