Several pens over £95 to a top of £105 sold by Lousie Brewer, St Meryn. 232 Lambs Good entry met a strong Weight Top Average trade with a lot of light 36 Per Head Per Kilo Per Head Per kilo to 38kgs lambs on offer 32.1-39 95.50 245 85 225 39.1-45.5 115 261.4 101.50 240.4 realising 235 to 245p a kilo. 45.6-52 118 246 116.70 243.9 The well fleshed heavier 52+ 114 211 114 211.1 lambs sold to a premium, Over all 118 261.4 107 237.7 top being 261.4 for a pen of 44kgs £115 from Eddie Cowling, St Gennys. Top per head on the day was £118 for a smart pen of 48kgs from Edd Doidge, Bendon Farm, Liskeard. 61 Hoggs Smaller entry saw the well fleshed Hoggs realising between £85 to a top of £99 from Capehope LTD, Treroosal, St Teath. Couples The Couples are drying up and the trade is very strong. Doubles up to £220 and singles topped at £155 all sold by B A Sheep, Treskinnick Cross. Show and Sale of Poll Dorset and Dorset Horn Sheep Breeders Association Judge Mr Andrew Kingdon awarded the following prizes Shearling Ewes 1st Chris Nicholls, Boscastle £145 2nd Dudley and Martin Harris, Mount £150 3rd David Hopper, Sweetshouse £148 Ewe Lambs 1st Chris Nicholls £113 A large crowd of prospective buyers in attendance, resulted in a very fast trade and a total clearance was achieved. 9 pens of Shearling Ewes over £142 to a top of £150 from Dudley and Martin Harris of Mount. Rams A firm trade and 1st prize and Champion overall of the day went to Messrs V M and A Care, Burras, Wendron, who realised 400 GNS, who also sold another smart Shearling at 380 GNS. Older Rams topped at 360GNS for a 6T from David and Mark Thomas, Treguddick. STORE CATTLE AUCTIONEER RICHARD DENNIS Antoher good entry for the time of year of nearly 300 Cattle going under the hammer to a packed ring of buyers, resulting in a very strong trade from start to finish. Steers John Crago from Par topped the day at £1140 for his Aberdeen Angus, followed by the Hooper Family of Pengold who had a smart run of Cattle on offer and saw their best pair of Charolais Steers reach £1120 and 3 Aberdeen Angus Steers also made £1120. Five tidy Simmental Steers from the same run topped at £1080, and their Hereford Steers saw several over £960 to a top of £1100. Not so many Friesians on offer this week but the ones that were on offer met a strong trade, top being £965 for 7 Steers, again from the Hooper Family. Steve Nankivell & Sons, Treswollack, St Breward had a cracking run of 52 majority Charolais x, 12-14 month old Cattle on offer and saw their first bunch of 6 steers top at £1000. Mr Ken Crocker of Crackington Haven had his usual run of smart well bred South Devon 12 month old Steers sell to a top of £920. Heifers 126 Heifers on offer saw the strong Heifers well over £1000 to a top of £1090, for a single Simmental again from the Hooper family of Pengold, who also realised £1050 for their best British Blue. Charolais x Heifers saw 3 bunches on the morning over £1000 to a top £1035, again for 12 to 14 month olds from Steve Nankivell & Sons, St Breward. Keith Vincent of Grampound Road had his usual run of smart Hereford Heifers, which topped at £905. Several pens of large framed lambs over £62 to a top of £65.50 from 2 vendors, Richard Nankivell, Tregregnan and Chris Ruby, of Ashwater. Shorn lambs were sought after, Top was £62 from Vaughn Hughes, Kelly, Lifton. Small framed lambs were more difficult to place this week. 226 Fat Lamb The trade has got stronger over the past few days with the well fleshed lambs selling to a premium. Several pens around 175p to a top of 180p for to pens of Texel x 46kgs £82.80 from Johny May, Trewithan, St Merryn. Many pens over £82 to a top of £85 for a pen of heavies from AR Hooper & Sons, Pengold, Crackington Haven.

The complete programme comprises approximately 950 sites covering 4230 km of river and 27 km of canal. The full programme is completed in two years, with half the sites surveyed in any one year. Twenty-two key sites are visited every year, to assess annual changes? seven of the sites are solely to monitor discharges from sewage treatment works (STWs) and are not used for river quality classification. The complete programme matches the routine chemical monitoring programme, but includes additional sites so that all reaches which had been assigned River Quality Objectives are monitored. Fourteen sites, originally programmed for the 1993 survey, are also to be surveyed in 1992 to support the Operational Investigation into the impact of the Wheal Jane pollution incident on the River Carnon. Macro-invertebrates are sampled three times in the year; in Spring, Summer and Autumn. Habitat features and macrophytes are recorded once. However, like so many other unbelievable aspects of the flash floods of 16 August 2004, that is just what happened. That crowds of residents and visitors gathered round the harbour on May Day to celebrate the village’s regeneration and the re-opening of nearly all the affected businesses, is testimony to the spirit and determination of the people of Boscastle. The Environment Agency was pleased to participate and to have been able to lend support to the event, which also marked the completion of our new culvert for the River Jordan and the other remedial work.

Grenville Rowe, Lanoy, also realised £111 for his Suffolk x Mules. Dorset Ewes £91 from George Williams, San Mark, St Kew. Richard and Bill Pethick, of Trevalga topped the Mules at £99. Hill bred ewes to £79. 119 Fat Hoggs Again all the well fleshed Hoggs sold to a premium, top per kilo being 259p for a pen of 47.4kgs £123 from Ivan Gribble, North Hill. 9 Pens of Hoggs over £130 to a top of £140 from Mr R Shazell, Tregamere Barton. Mr & Mrs C J Burrow, Tredown, Wellcombe realised £137 and David Hopper, Rew Farm, Sweets House realised £134 with his first pen of heavies.
