As a rising star in the coaching profession, Pat Narduzzi annually entertained overtures from programs throughout the country. In his eight years at Michigan State, Narduzzi built a reputation as one of ’s brightest coordinators. He was a perennial entry on various “hot hires” lists forecasting the next crop of impact head coaches. For Narduzzi, however, becoming a head coach wasn’t as important as finding the right fit. He found that right fit at Pitt. “There wasn’t any doubt, I knew Pitt was the one,” Narduzzi said. “It’s got everything. I think you’ve got the ability to do big things here. There couldn’t have been a better fit.” For Pitt fans, it seemed appropriate that Narduzzi was officially named the Panthers’ PERSONAL INFORMATION new head coach in the midst of the holiday season on Dec. 26, 2014. In 2013, Michigan State finished No. 3 in the country following a Big Ten title and 24-20 victory over No. 5 Stanford in the Rose Bowl. In the wake of that championship season, Narduzzi was named the 2013 recipient of the prestigious , annually presented to the country’s top assistant coach.

Matt Canada, a 24-year coaching veteran who over the past three seasons orchestrated some of the most productive offenses in NC State history, was named offensive coordinator at Pitt by Pat Narduzzi in January. Under Canada’s direction, NC State averaged more than 30 points per game each of the past two seasons. In 2015, the Wolfpack scored 33.2 points per contest, the third-highest average in school history. Canada’s Pitt appointment marks a reunion with Narduzzi. The pair worked together at Northern Illinois from 2000-02. Canada served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at NC State from 2013-15. Last season, the Wolfpack produced 412.8 yards per game—the fifth-highest average in school history—despite losing leading rusher Matt Dayes (108.1 yards per game) to injury for the final five games. Regarded as one of the nation’s top young defensive minds, Josh Conklin enters his second season as Pitt’s defensive coordinator. Under Conklin’s watch, Pitt’s 2015 defense played with a renewed energy and aggressiveness. This was most apparent in the Panthers’ pass rush, which produced 37 2016 PREVIEW sacks, nearly double their 2014 total of 19. In terms of total tackles for loss, Pitt compiled 88 in 2015 compared to 54 the previous season. Pitt’s defense featured two of the ACC’s most disruptive players. Defensive end Ejuan Price led the ACC and ranked eighth nationally in sacks (11.5 total, 0.88 per game). Safety Jordan Whitehead, the ACC’s Overall and Defensive Rookie of the Year, set a Pitt true

freshman record with 109 tackles and was a consensus Freshman All-American. In appointing Andre Powell as his special teams coordinator and running backs coach, Pat Narduzzi added to the Pitt staff an accomplished coaching veteran with nearly 30 years of experience. Powell’s influence was evident during the 2015 season. From a special teams standpoint, Pitt led the ACC and ranked fourth nationally with five blocked kicks. The Panthers additionally were among the country’s leaders in punt return defense (19th, 4.19 yards per return) and kickoff return defense (30th, 19.23 yards per return). Under Powell’s watch, running back Qadree Ollison was an All-ACC performer and the league’s Offensive Rookie of the Year. Ollison rushed for 1,121 yards and 11 touchdowns on 212 carries (5.3 avg.). He became just the fifth freshman in Pitt history to achieve a 1,000-yard rushing season. Rob Harley enters his second year as Pitt’s linebackers coach. Harley’s debut season witnessed career production from the Panthers’ starting linebackers, indicating big things for the unit in 2016. Departed senior Nicholas Grigsby was an All-ACC performer in 2015 after posting personal 2016 PREVIEW bests in tackles, TFLs and sacks. Grigsby signed with the this past spring. Returning linebackers Matt Galambos and Mike Caprara are viable all-star candidates this year after enjoying their best seasons as Panthers. A rugged defensive tackle at Pitt in the late 1980s who went on to play in the NFL, Tom Sims returned to his alma mater in 2015 to serve as Pat Narduzzi’s defensive line coach. Sims’ imprint on the defensive front was immediate and reflected his own playing style as a collegian. The Panthers were physical and disruptive up front, which helped the overall unit play at its highest level in recent seasons. Sims oversaw the development of two All-ACC performers, defensive end Ejuan Price and defensive tackle Darryl Render. Price, in particular, enjoyed a revival under Sims’ guidance. Limited to six games the prior three years due to injuries, Price led the ACC and ranked eighth nationally in sacks (11.5 total, 0.88 per game). Sims returned to Pitt following five seasons at Youngstown State (2010-14), where he coached an all-conference player each year of his tenure. Described by Narduzzi as “a highly disciplined coach who instills toughness in our entire program,” Andrews arrived at Pitt with strong credentials in both physical development and as a former player. Chris LaSala enters his 20th season overseeing football operations for the University of Pittsburgh. He has served Pitt as an assistant athletic director the past 17 years. A native of Aliquippa, Pa., LaSala ranks among the country’s most respected professionals in his capacity. He truly has proven to be the Panthers’ master of multitasking, handling such diverse responsibilities as team travel accommodations, youth summer camps, coaching clinics and preseason training camp arrangements as well as the daily administration for Pitt’s football team. LaSala also serves as the football program’s liaison to numerous campus offices and within the athletic department. One of LaSala’s most invaluable contributions at Pitt is his daily work with student-athletes in preparing them for life after college. His efforts have made the football program one of Pitt’s most active and enthusiastic teams when it comes to community service. Diethorn played a crucial role in this success and was particularly instrumental in the area of prospect communications and recruiting initiatives. Widely respected by his peers, Blanc is a past recipient of the NCAA Division I Head Athletic 2016 PREVIEW Trainer of the Year Award presented by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA). He has also been honored with the Distinguished Merit Award from the Pennsylvania Athletic Trainers’ Society in recognition of his dedicated service, past achievements and outstanding professional contributions that have furthered the advancement of the athletic training profession in the Commonwealth.
