OF CLOUDS AND BODIES: FILM AND THE DISLOCATION OF VISION IN BRAZILIAN AND JAPANESE INTERWAR AVANT-GARDES A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by André Keiji Kunigami August, 2018 © 2018 André Keiji Kunigami OF CLOUDS AND BODIES: FILM AND THE DISLOCATION OF VISION IN BRAZILIAN AND JAPANESE INTERWAR AVANT-GARDES André Keiji Kunigami, Ph. D. Cornell University 2018 Of Clouds and Bodies: Film and the Dislocation of Vision in Brazilian and Japanese Interwar Avant-gardes examines the political impact of film in conceptualizations of the body, vision, and movement in the 1920s and 1930s avant-gardes of Brazil and Japan. Through photographs, films, and different textual genres—travel diary, screenplay, theoretical essay, movie criticism, novel—I investigate the similar political role played by film in these “non-Western” avant-gardes in their relation to the idea of modernity, usually equivalent to that of the “West.” I explore racial, political, and historical entanglements that emerge when debates on aesthetic form encounters the filmic medium, theorized and experienced by the so-called “non-Western” spectator. Through avant-garde films such as Mário Peixoto’s Limite (1930), and Kinugasa Teinosuke’s A Page of Madness (1926); the theorizations of Octávio de Faria and Tanizaki Jun’ichirō; and the photographs and writings by Mário de Andrade and Murayama Tomoyoshi, this dissertation follows the clash between the desire for a universal and disembodied vision, and the encounter with filmic perception. I argue that the filmic apparatus, as a technology and a commodity, emphasizes an embodied and localized experience of vision and time that revealed the discourse on cultural-historical iii difference—the distinction between West and Rest, or modern and non-modern—as a suppressive modulator of material power dynamics embedded in racial, class, and gender hierarchies enjoyed by the cosmopolitan elite in the “peripheral” spaces.

Imōto-Moe: Sexualized Relationships Between Brothers and Sisters in Japanese Animation Tuomas Sibakov Master’s Thesis East Asian Studies Faculty of Humanities University of Helsinki November 2020 Tiedekunta – Fakultet – Faculty Koulutusohjelma – Utbildningsprogram – Degree Programme Faculty of Humanities East Asian Studies Opintosuunta – Studieinriktning – Study Track East Asian Studies Tekijä – Författare – Author Tuomas Valtteri Sibakov Työn nimi – Arbetets titel – Title Imōto-Moe: Sexualized Relationships Between Brothers and Sisters in Japanese Animation Työn laji – Arbetets art – Level Aika – Datum – Month and Sivumäärä– Sidoantal – Number of pages Master’s Thesis year 83 November 2020 Tiivistelmä – Referat – Abstract In this work I examine how imōto-moe, a recent trend in Japanese animation and manga in which incestual connotations and relationships between brothers and sisters is shown, contributes to the sexualization of girls in the Japanese society. This is done by analysing four different series from 2010s, in which incest is a major theme. The analysis is done using visual analysis. The study concludes that although the series can show sexualization of drawn underage girls, reading the works as if they would posit either real or fictional little sisters as sexual targets. Instead, the analysis suggests that following the narrative, the works should be read as fictional underage girls expressing a pure feelings and sexuality, unspoiled by adult corruption. To understand moe, it is necessary to understand the history of Japanese animation. Much of the genres, themes and styles in manga and anime are due to Tezuka Osamu, the “god of manga” and “god of animation”. From the 1950s, Tezuka was influenced by Disney and other western animators at the time.

  • 1 Urusei Yatsura Disc 21, Episodes 79 – 82
URUSEI YATSURA DISC 21, EPISODES 79 – 82 Episode 79, Story 102: The House of Mendou - Summer X'mas “The Young Master's combat-shooting skills are much improved!” - shooting instructor. Fans of Japanese cinema might notice a clever visual reference and get a good laugh - The instructor here is modeled after Tanaka Kunie, one of the most popular Japanese actors. “Hit!” - a banner held by Ataru. A trivial, visual pun here is that Ataru is holding a banner that reads “Hit!”, which is “Atari!” in Japanese. “That's the Kuroko Group's Cargocopter squadron, sir.” - Mendou's employee. “Don't panic! They're Kuroko. Think of them as a part of the background.” - Megane. The Kuroko Group (“Kuroko-gumi”) in UY has a basis in real life. In traditional Japanese theater, “kuroko” are stage assistants covered in black veils who act as invisible puppeteers, operate props or change sets, etc. They are officially invisible and not to be noticed. Historically, Kuroko evolved during the Edo period, so their speech patterns are archaic at times. “What Fireworks!”, for instance, is based on an Edo-era phrase, “Tamaya!,” which alluded to a famous fireworks shop. The main humor with these Kuroko in UY is that they perform ‘invisible’ acts in such a blatantly obvious manner! “As you know, in high school baseball tournaments, there are spring tournaments and summer tournaments.” – Kuroko. Needless to say, high school baseball tournaments are a very big thing in Japan, similar in popularity to collegiate basketball in the US. Scouts from professional teams seek new players during these events.
