Studies were based on histological examination of gonads as well as Turbo populations at two sites found in spawning state throughout the year. The gonads of Turbo coronatus at both localities were never found in completely spent condition, thus suggesting that they are partial spawners. Generally, it appears that spawning in males and females of T. coronatus at Manora channel is slightly asynchronous as compared to Buleji where spawning pattern seems to be more synchronous. Oocytes diameter in specimen of this species at Manora was significantly larger than that of specimens studied from Buleji (ANOVA: F=6.22; P<0.05). The overall sex-ratio was close to 1:1 theoretical ratio at both of the sites.

  • Agglutinins with Binding Specificity for Mammalian Erythrocytes in the Whole Body Extract of Marine Gastropods
© 2019 JETIR June 2019, Volume 6, Issue 6 www.jetir.org (ISSN-2349-5162) AGGLUTININS WITH BINDING SPECIFICITY FOR MAMMALIAN ERYTHROCYTES IN THE WHOLE BODY EXTRACT OF MARINE GASTROPODS Thana Lakshmi, K. (Department of Zoology, Holy Cross College (Autonomous), Nagercoil – 629 004). Abstract Presence of agglutinins in the whole body extract of some locally available species of marine gastropods was studied by adopting haemagglutination assay using 10 different mammalian erythrocytes. Of the animals surveyed, 14 species showed the presence of agglutinins for one or more type of erythrocytes. The agglutinating activity varied with the species as well as with the type of erythrocytes. Rabbit and rat erythrocytes were agglutinated by all the species studied. Highest activity of the agglutinins was recorded in the extract of Fasciolaria tulipa and Fusinus nicobaricus for rabbit erythrocytes, as revealed by a HA (Haemagglutination) titre of 1024, the maximum value obtained in the study. Trochus radiatus, Tonna cepa, Bufornia echineta, Volegalea cochlidium, Chicoreus ramosus, Chicoreus brunneus, Babylonia spirata, Babylonia zeylanica and Turbinella pyrum are among the other species, possessing strong (HA titre ranging from 128 to 512) anti-rabbit agglutinins. Agglutinins with binding specificity for rat erythrocytes have been observed in the extract of Trochus radiatus, Fasciolaria tulipa and Fusinus nicobaricus. None of the species agglutinated dog, cow, goat and buffalo erythrocytes. Agglutinins with weak activity against human erythrocytes were observed in Chicoreus brunneus (HA = 4 – 8). The present work has helped to identify potential sources of agglutinins among marine gastropods available in and around Kanyakumari District and thereby provides the baseline information, in the search for new pharmacologically valuable compounds derived from marine organisms.

MASTALLER Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Lehrstuhl für Spez. Zoologie Bochum, West-Germany With one text-figure and one table ABSTRACT This study summarizes field observations and collections of the molluscan fauna of the coastal and offshore reefs in the area of Port Sudan, Central Red Sea. In spite of the fact that some families of this group were described from several areas of the Red Sea, there exists only little information on the entire faunal composition of this region. 282 species of Amphineura, Gastropoda, and Bivalvia, collected and studied in nine localities are listed according to their habitats. Moreover, descriptions of the prominent members of typical molluscan assemblages are given for 13 habitats and microhabitats which differ in their morphological structures and in their hydrographic and physiographic conditions. Emphasis is placed on further studies on the trophic interactions within certain habitats. INTRODUCTION Although there is a considerable number of taxonomie literature on some molluscan families in the Indo-West-Padfic (Abbott, i960; Burgess, 1970; Cernohorsky, 1967; Habe, 1964; Kira, 1962; Powell, 1964; Rosewater, 1965), there is comparatively scarce information for the Red Sea. After the exten• sive surveys and descriptions of Issel, 1869, Hall & Standen, 1907, Jickeli, 1874, Shopland, 1902, and Sturany, 1901, 1903, in more recent times only a few studies were published on the entire faunal composition of molluscs in this region. Most of these publications deal with certain families, sometimes they also give information about their zoogeographical distribution in the Red Sea: Thus the cypraeids seem to yield the best information on their occurrence throughout the region (Foin, 1972; Mienis, 1971b; O'Malley, 1971; Schilder, 1965).

A total 83 species were identified representing 6 phyla, belonging to12 classes, 34 orders and 50 families were recorded from Ratnagiri coast. Results showed that mollusca exhibited highest contribution with 46 species with 55% of the total diversity. Phylum porifera appeared as the second most dominant group contributed 12 species with 15% diversity, Coelenterates comprised 10 species with 12% and Arthropods contributed 10 species with 12% diversity, Echinodermata 3 species with 4% and last Annelids 2 species with 2% of the total diversity. The diversity of macrofaunal group in prevalence of different habitats a wide chance of research to further explore on the possibility of ecological value and there conservation. Keywords: Diversity, Intertidal zone, Macrofaunal assemblage, Ratnagiri Coast. I. INTRODUCTION The intertidal zone of any ecological area is considered as the most productive with the greatest diversity of plant and animal life. Because of its accessibility, the intertidal zone remain highly explored than any other area (Vaghelaet al., 2010). Rocky shores are the most extensive littoral habitats exposed to eroding waves and thus are ecologically very important (Crowe, et al., 2000).

We conducted a study in order to determine the shell utilization pattern of the land hermit crab Coenobita scaevola (Forskäl, 1775), the only species representing the family Coenobitidae in the Red Sea. Hermit crabs were collected during July 2003 and January 2004 along the sandy shores of protected area of Wadi-Elgemal, south Red Sea. Animals were fixed in 10% for- malin and transported to the laboratory where they were weighed and measured for cephalothoracic shield length (CSL) and width, left propodus length and height. Gastropod shells species were identified, weighed and measured for shell aperture width and length and shell internal volume. A total of 391 individuals were collected (219 females, 172 males) and were found occupying ten shell species, with clear significant occupation of Nerita undata. A positive relationship was obtained between the size of the shells occupied and the hermit crabs. Analysis of shell internal volume and crab dimensions demonstrated that this shell dimension con- stitutes mainly the determinant for C. scaevola shell utilization. With respect to the size of the animals and the occupied shell type, Nerita undata was occupied by a wide range of CSL (2.5–8.5mm).

  • Supplement – December 2017 – Survey of the Literature on Recent
A Malacological Journal ISSN 1565-1916 No. 36 - SUPPLEMENT DECEMBER 2017 2 SURVEY OF THE LITERATURE ON RECENT SHELLS FROM THE RED SEA (third enlarged and revised edition) L.J. van Gemert* Summary This literature survey lists approximately 3,050 references. Shells are being considered here as the shell bearing molluscs of the Gastropoda, Bivalvia and Scaphopoda. The area does not only comprise the Red Sea, but also the Gulf of Aden, Somalia and the Suez Canal, including the Lessepsian species in the Mediterranean Sea. Literature on fossils shells, particularly those from the Holocene, Pleistocene and Pliocene, is listed too. Introduction My interest in recent shells from the Red Sea dates from about 1996. Since then, I have been, now and then, trying to obtain information on this subject. Some years ago I decide to stop gathering data in a haphazard way and to do it more properly. This resulted in a first survey of approximately 1,420 and a second one of 2,025 references (van Gemert, 2010 & 2011). Since then, this survey has again been enlarged and revised and a number of errors have been corrected. It contains now approximately 3,050 references. Scope In principle every publication in which molluscs are reported to live or have lived in the Red Sea should be listed in the survey. This means that besides primary literature, i.e. articles in which researchers are reporting their finds for the first time, secondary and tertiary literature, i.e. reviews, monographs, books, etc are to be included too. These publications were written not only by a wide range of authors ranging from amateur shell collectors to professional malacologists but also people interested in the field of archaeology, geology, etc.
