SINCE 1895, few workers on the anatomy of mollusca have devoted their attention to the genus Conus. In that year Dr. Bergh (3) published an extensive memoir on a large number of species in this genus, and his work may be considered as the most complete, and embracing the greatest number of. species examined, though his description of each species was not exhaustive. Troschel (20) devoted most of his attention to the radulse of the different genera and species of which his excellent work is composed, and although he gives a certain number of figures with descriptions of various anatomical points, these latter are for the most part of rather a crude and diagrammatic kind. While malacologists have done a certain amount towards working out and elucidating the anatomy of various members of this genus, the conchologists, as is generally the case, have produced many excellent monographs, and such names as Reeve, Sowerby, Tryon, Weinkauff and others will always be remembered for the general excellence of their figures and descriptions of the numerous species which are contained in this genus. Various writers have essayed different forms of classification, but for the most part on purely conchological grounds, and when more is known about the inhabitants of these shells, and their different points of resemblance to one VOL. 60, PART 1. Byssal threads from Mytilus species, which are comprised of modified collagen proteins – have become a veritable archetype for bio-inspired polymers due to their self-healing properties. However, threads from different species are comparatively much less understood. In particular, the byssus of Pinna nobilis comprises thousands of fine fibers utilized by humans for millennia to fashion lightweight golden fabrics known as sea silk. ABSTRACT In this paper we report the effects of crude venom of Conus musicus on the isolated frog heart preparation and hematological parameters of rats. In the episode of administration of the Conus musicus toxin as 10, 20 µg dose attenuated the contractions of the frog heart in a dose dependent manner indicating the depressant action. When toxin co-administered with Cacl2 there was no increase in heart rate. When toxin co-administered with double dose of Cacl2, the action of toxin was partially blocked. From which it could be speculated that the Conus musicus toxin consists of directly acting depressing principle (calcium channels blocking) because the venom is blocking the action of Cacl 2 at normal dose and it is reversible when the dose of Cacl2 was doubled the dose of toxin. The hematological parameters study was conducted on 8- weeks old male Wister rats and crude extract (250 µg of Conus musicus) was orally administered (50, 100, and 200 µg /kg) for 28 consecutive days. Our results demonstrated that experimental groups receiving both 100 and 200 mcg/kg Conus musicus treatment led to significant dose-dependent decrease in some hematological parameters RBC, WBC counts, haematocrite and mean corpuscular hemoglobin values at the end of the experiment. -

(UPD, Philippines) in September 2003 for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Marine Biology within the School of Marine Biology and Aquaculture James Cook University ABSTRACT The aim of this thesis is to describe the distribution of coral reef and shore gastropods in the Philippines, using the species rich taxa, Nerita, Clypeomorus, Muricidae, Littorinidae, Conus and Oliva. These taxa represent the major gastropod groups in the intertidal and shallow water ecosystems of the Philippines. This distribution is described with reference to the McManus (1985) basin isolation hypothesis of species diversity in Southeast Asia. I examine species-area relationships, range sizes and shapes, major ecological factors that may affect these relationships and ranges, and a phylogeny of one taxon. Range shape and orientation is largely determined by geography. Large ranges are typical of mid-intertidal herbivorous species. Triangualar shaped or narrow ranges are typical of carnivorous taxa. Narrow, overlapping distributions are more common in the central Philippines. The frequency of range sizesin the Philippines has the right skew typical of tropical high diversity systems. -

Shibu Vardhanan Underwater adhesion in mussels (Bivalvia) is an extreme adaptation to achieve robust and frm wet adhesion in the freshwater/brackish/ocean, which biochemically shaped through millions of years. The protein-based adhesion has huge prospective in various felds like industry, medical, etc. Currently, no comprehensive records related to the systematic documentation of structural and functional properties of Mussel foot proteins (Mfps). In this study, we identifed the nine species of bivalves in which the complete sequence of at least one adhesive protein is known. The insilico characterization revealed the specifc physio-chemical structural and functional characters of each Mfps. The evolutionary analyses of selected bivalves are mainly based on Mfps, Mitogenome, and TimeTree. The outcome of the works has great applications for designing biomimetic materials in future. Some groups of mussels are capable to produce proteinaceous glue- like sticky material known as byssus thread made by an array of foot proteins (fps). Tis byssus contains mainly four parts i.e. Plaque, thread, stem, and root. Individual threads proximally merged together to form stem and base of the stem (root) deeply anchored at the base of animal foot. Each byssus threads terminating distally with a fattened plaque which mediates adhesion to the substratum1–4. Each part of the byssus thread complex formed by the auto-assembly of secretory products originating from four distinct glands enclosed in the mussel foot4,5. Tese mussel foot protein (Mfps), mastered the ability to binding the diverse substratum by using adhesive plaques. -

Poppe INTRODUCTION The publication of Philippine Marine Mollusks, Volumes 1 to 4 has been a revelation to the conchological community. Apart from being the delight of collectors, the PMM started a new way of layout and publishing - followed today by many authors. Internet technology has allowed more than 50 experts worldwide to work on the collection that forms the base of the 4 PMM books. This expertise, together with modern means of identification has allowed a quality in determinations which is unique in books covering a geographical area. Our Volume 1 was published only 9 years ago: in 2008. Since that time “a lot” has changed. Finally, after almost two decades, the digital world has been embraced by the scientific community, and a new generation of young scientists appeared, well acquainted with text processors, internet communication and digital photographic skills. Museums all over the planet start putting the holotypes online – a still ongoing process – which saves taxonomists from huge confusion and “guessing” about how animals look like. Initiatives as Biodiversity Heritage Library made accessible huge libraries to many thousands of biologists who, without that, were not able to publish properly. The process of all these technological revolutions is ongoing and improves taxonomy and nomenclature in a way which is unprecedented. All this caused an acceleration in the nomenclatural field: both in quantity and in quality of expertise and fieldwork. The above changes are not without huge problematics. Many studies are carried out on the wide diversity of these problems and even books are written on the subject.
