This trend appeared on the construction market along with the progress of advanced struc- tural solutions and the high demand for luxury apartments with spectacular views. Two types of constructions can be distinguished within this typology: ultra-luxury super-slim towers with the exclusivity of one or two apartments per floor (e.g. located in Manhattan, New York) and other slender high-rise towers, built in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Hong Kong, Bangkok, and Melbourne, among others, which have multiple apartments on each floor. This paper presents a survey of selected slender high-rise buildings, where structural improvements in tall buildings developed over the recent decade are considered from the architectural and structural view. -

THOMAS KERWIN THOMAS KERWIN BIOGRAPHY Before founding bKL Architecture, Thomas Kerwin was a Partner at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) in Chicago, where he began his architecture career in 1986. At SOM, Kerwin developed a special expertise in the management of highly complex, large-scale urban projects across the globe. He lived and worked in Manila, Philippines, during the mid-1990s. Kerwin has BIOGRAPHY participated in the design and construction of significant commercial and civic buildings around the world over the past two decades, including the Greenland Financial Center in Nanjing, China; Pearl River Tower in Guangzhou, China; White Magnolia Plaza and Chongming Island Master Plan in Shanghai, China; Rockwell Center in Manila, Philippines; and the Broadgate Development Exchange House in London, England. These projects have led to numerous awards and worldwide recognition in the industry. Along with more than two decades of international experience, Kerwin is committed to civic endeavors and projects in the Midwest and at home in Chicago. Kerwin’s tireless efforts as a member of the Chicago 2016 Committee and as the Managing Partner of SOM’s Olympic team have earned him universal praise from the architectural community, city government, and business and civic leaders. His concern for the well being of urban and regional communities can be seen in his determination to positively shape their future. Kerwin is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and a past President of AIA Chicago. He is on the Board of Directors of the Chicago Sports Commission. Fall/Winter 2018 Upon Reflection “We will not promise you happiness. We will not wish you security. For we remember that ‘security is mortal’s chiefest enemy.’ And we know that you can be secure only when you can stand everything that can happen to you. If your school has prepared you for this, it has been a good school.” – Sister M. Madeleva Wolff, CSC This quote from Sister Madeleva comes to mind when it seems like there is so much darkness in our world. Natural disasters on the coasts have cost people of everything, their homes and their belongings. Fires and hurricanes have destroyed towns and taken lives. The Catholic Church is facing a crisis of its own with the release of the Pennsylvania Grand Jury report in August and reports of clergy sexual abuse surfacing. With the allegations, questions of what it means to be Catholic pervades media and our own interior lives. These crises have me wondering, what is next? Facing the unknown is never easy. We’ve seen this firsthand on our campus with Former President Jan Cervelli’s resignation and our leadership transition in October. It caused concern and fear among those who know and love Saint Mary’s. But in the months since Nancy Nekvasil has assumed the interim presidency, our community has come together in ways unforeseen. Students have organized town hall sessions with administration to discuss their concerns. Faculty and administrators have re-envisioned and implemented a new academic services structure to better serve our students. True to our mission, we are responding to the needs of the time. -

MULTIVARIATE OPTIMIZATION OF NEIGHBORHOOD SCALE PROBLEMS FOR ECONOMIC, ENVIRONMENTAL, AND SOCIAL SUSTAINABILITY BY GRANT NORMAN MOSEY DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Architecture in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2020 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Brian Deal, Chair Professor Mohamed Boubekri Associate Professor Richard K. Strand Assistant Professor Yun Kyu Yi ABSTRACT This thesis begins by arguing that the architectural profession has fallen out of balance. I contend that the series of objectives which compete for the architect’s attention have been gradually subsumed by economic concerns. As a means of empirically seeking to restore a balance, a method is proposed for quantitatively determining the trade-offs between the social, economic, and environmental sustainability of an architectural problem. The method is tested on a neighborhood-scale mega-development. This scale of built environment intervention falls between the building scale work of architects and the city scale of urban designers and geographers. The selected design intervention is in Chicago, Illinois with variables including the number of buildings, their use, and the height of each type of building. Solutions are optimized for Social, Economic, and/or Environmentally sustainability outcomes using a single-objective genomic algorithm. A multi-objective genomic algorithm is then utilized to evaluate all three sustainability objectives simultaneously. Solutions to the chosen problem are proposed and contextualized within the “restoring balance” framework discussed above. The outcomes appear to show that such a process can be efficacious in quantitativley balancing the sustainability based trade-offs implicit to the design process. -
