From Poet to Poet or Shelley’s Inconsistencies in Keats’s Panegyric: Adonais as an Autobiographical Work of Art by Caroline Bertonèche (Paris 3) Adonais, in short, is such an elegy as poet might be expected to write upon poet. The author has had before him his recollections of Lycidas, of Moschus and Bion, and of the doctrines of Plato; and in the stanza of the most poetical of poets, Spenser, has brought his own genius, in all its ethereal beauty, to lead a pomp of Loves, Graces, and Intelligences, in honour of the departed. It is a highly wrought piece of art, perhaps better in point of composition than anything I have written. Light Shadows: Loose Adaptations of Gothic Literature in American TV Series o... 1 Light Shadows: Loose Adaptations of Gothic Literature in American TV Series of the 1960s and early 1970s Dennis Tredy 1 In the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, in a somewhat failed attempt to wrestle some high ratings away from the network leader CBS, ABC would produce a spate of supernatural sitcoms, soap operas and investigative dramas, adapting and borrowing heavily from major works of Gothic literature of the nineteenth and early twentieth century. The trend began in 1964, when ABC produced the sitcom The Addams Family (1964-66), based on works of cartoonist Charles Addams, and CBS countered with its own The Munsters (CBS, 1964-66) –both satirical inversions of the American ideal sitcom family in which various monsters and freaks from Gothic literature and classic horror films form a family of misfits that somehow thrive in middle-class, suburban America. -

We were still just children, but we already had Vietnam to think about. The evening news was a body count. At camp, we didn’t see the news, but we listened to Eric Burdon and the Animals’ Sky Pilot while doing our beadwork with Father Pekarski. Pekarski looked like Grandpa from The Munsters. He was bald with a scowl and a growl, wearing shorts and an official camp tee shirt over his pot belly. The local legend was that at night, before going out to do his vampire thing, he would come in and mix up your beads so that the red ones were in the blue box, and the black ones were in the white box. Then, he would twist the thread on your bead loom a hundred and twenty times so that it would be impossible to work with the next day. And laugh. In fact, he was as nice a May 06, 2020 guy as you could ever want to know. The Thanatic Corporeality of Edward Onslow Ford's Shelley Memorial

Since its unveiling in 1893, Edward Onslow Ford's memorial to the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley has been a disconcerting presence at University College (figs. 71, 77-81). Often met with derision, the Shelley Memorial has suf fered perennial undergraduate pranks, vandalism, and recurring attempts to bury - or at least move - this uneasy and awkward body. In art-historical accounts of the period, the work has been quietly passed over despite its importance to late Victorian sculpture and criticism.' All of this squeamishness, however, is precisely the point. Almost a century before the corpse would be explored by sculptors like Paul Thek, Robert Gober, or Marc Quinn Edward Onslow Ford brought the viewer face to face with thanatic corporeality. Ford used the commission for the ShelleyMemorial to formulate a polemical contribution to the on-going debates about the propriety and potential of sculptural verisimilitude. He employed the corpse as the embodiment of realism itself and made the figure of Shelley its poetic allegory. In this work he posited a highly self-conscious and self-reflexive articulation of verisimilitude and its overlap with the materiality of the sculptural object. Despite the fact that he would become one of the pillars of the sculptural renaissance in the 1880s and 1890s, Ford had little of the formal training in sculpture from which his col leagues benefited. -

1 Fracking (with) post-modernism, or there’s a lil’ Dr Frankenstein in all of us by Bryan Konefsky Since the dawn of (wo)mankind we humans have had the keen, pro-cinematic ability to assess our surroundings in ways not unlike the quick, rack focus of a movie camera. We move fluidly between close examination (a form of deconstruction) to a wide-angle view of the world (contextualizing the minutiae of our dailiness within deep philosophical inquiries about the nature of existence). To this end, one could easily infer that Dziga Vertov’s kino-eye might be a natural outgrowth of human evolution. However, we should be mindful of obvious and impetuous conclusions that seem to lead – superficially – to the necessity of a kino-prosthesis. In terms of a kino-prosthesis, the discomfort associated with a camera-less experience is understood, especially in a world where, as articulated so well by thinkers such as Sherry Turkle or Marita Sturken, one impulsively records information as proof of experience (see Turkle’s Alone Together: Why We Expect More From Technology and Less From Each Other and Sturken’s Practices of Looking: An Introduction to Visual Culture). The unsettling nature of a camera-less experience reminds me of visionary poet Lisa Gill (see her text Caput Nili), who once told me about a dream in which she and Orson Welles made a movie. The problem was that neither of them had a camera. Lisa is quick on her feet so her solution was simply to carve the movie into her arm. For Lisa, it is clear what the relationship is between a sharp blade and a camera, and the association abounds with metaphors and allusions to my understanding of the pro-cinematic human. -

From Coppet to Milan: Romantic Circles at La Scala Carmen Casaliggi Cardiff Metropolitan University When Percy Shelley left England and settled with Mary Godwin and Claire Clairmont at Maison Chapuis close to Villa Diodati in May 1816, his thoughts naturally turned to the people who were part of the coterie of European writers and artists visiting Switzerland during that Summer. As he wrote in a letter to Thomas Jefferson Hogg dated July 18, 1816: “Lord Byron, whom I have seen at this place, is about to publish a new canto of Childe Harold [...] Mad. de Stael [sic] is here & a number of literary people whom I have not seen, & indeed have no great curiosity to see” (493). Despite their strident disagreement over the merits of Byron’s entourage, Shelley’s words are suggestive of the significance of Switzerland as a centre of creativity and inspiration; it also becomes an important site to test authentic forms of sociability. John William Polidori’s diary entry for May 25, 1816 – written only few days after he arrived in Switzerland as Byron’s personal physician - retraces the footsteps of writers and philosophers interested in Swiss destinations: “It is a classic ground we go over. Buonaparte, Joseph, Bonnet, Necker, Staël, Voltaire, Rousseau, all have their villas (except Rousseau). Genthoud, Ferney, Coppet are close to the road” (96). This distinctive association of the biographical, the historical, and the geographical indicates the extent to which the Swiss experience can be seen as one of the first Romantic examples of influence and collaboration between British and European Romantic writers. -

While this episode has a real monster that lurks in the woods, the story isn't really about why or how her friend disappears. A Perfectly Messed-Up Story. The Blair Witch is at its most scary when it remains unseen and is used to psychologically torture the characters because audiences don't know who or what the Blair Witch actually is, even with the knowledge of the folklore behind it. The docudrama was created in the early '70s with a low budget, meaning that the footage was poor quality. Top-Rated Episodes S1. Daily Dead. A Walk on the Oxford Poem Road (a Haibun read at the Sketches from the Poem Road Closing Celebration, in the Glass Tank, OBU, Friday 15 July 2016) (Isao rang a bell to signal changes in direction) Chris: Look! early summer is out stretching its legs in the sunshine. The wind is light and warm today. And in the Glass Tank gallery, Isao’s paper wind is blowing over the slates. We are 7 friendly writers and poets, including an artist, all eager to be out there in the wind and sunshine, walking like a group of humble Basho’s in our paper coats. Wendy: Take my hands, walk with me for part of our journey listen for the bird calling, notice one star. Chris: Isao, tell us about the Road… Isao: The Road is made of Poems you love. You want to see where they started, the place or the poet who started them. Chris: I’m already thinking of Shelley’s memorial in University College! Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792 – 1822) Biography: ercy Bysshe Shelley, (born Aug. 4, 1792, Field Place, near Horsham, Sussex, Eng.— died July 8, 1822, at sea off Livorno, Tuscany [Italy]), English Romantic poet whose P passionate search for personal love and social justice was gradually channeled from overt actions into poems that rank with the greatest in the English language. Shelley was the heir to rich estates acquired by his grandfather, Bysshe (pronounced “Bish”) Shelley. Timothy Shelley, the poet’s father, was a weak, conventional man who was caught between an overbearing father and a rebellious son. The young Shelley was educated at Syon House Academy (1802–04) and then at Eton (1804–10), where he resisted physical and mental bullying by indulging in imaginative escapism and literary pranks. Between the spring of 1810 and that of 1811, he published two Gothic novels and two volumes of juvenile verse. In the fall of 1810 Shelley entered University College, Oxford, where he enlisted his fellow student Thomas Jefferson Hogg as a disciple. But in March 1811, University College expelled both Shelley and Hogg for refusing to admit Shelley’s authorship of The Necessity of Atheism.
