An analysis of the grave’s original setting and its subsequent renovations suggests instead that it enjoyed a privileged position. Historical descriptions, when considered together with visitors’ accounts – avaluablesourceifusedcritically– and little-known artists’ depictions of Keats’s grave prompt a re-assessment of ideas of its ‘marginality’ and ‘neglect’ in the nineteenth century. The grave lies quite alone, and is evidently much neglected. -

| 1 , SHELLEY’S“ADONAIS” AS A PASTORAL ELEGY(1) Terufumi KIDO This paper aims chieny to discuss some salient featuresof “Adonais” by Percy Bysshe Shelley as an English pastoral elegy such as John Milton’s “Lycidas” and Matthew Arnold’s “Thyrsis.”lt is we11-known that the poem was written to mourn over the premature death of John Keats in Rome in February, 1821.For a full understanding and appreciation of “Adonais” it may be desirable to have some knowledge of Greek myth centering on the Adonis legend, the tradition of pastoral elegy, Shelley’s view of Keats and his works, and Shelley’s antipathy toward his contemporary reviewer of literary creation. Although “Shelley’s selection ofthe word ‘Adonais’ remains a matter of conjecture” l there is an interesting and persuasivereference to the title.“The change from Adonis to Adonais was an inspired piece of word-coining. The extra vowel creates a richer and more gracious flavour. The long-drawn final synables add an elegiac undertone, and ‘Adonis’seerns curt and flat after‘Adonais.’The ダ ダmetrical problems too are eased by the extra stress - Adonais instead of Adonls. ダ ・ 。2 ltis certain that; the title“Adonais” comes from the name of a beautiful youth,Adonis beloved by Aphrodite, the goddess of love ,beauty and fertility in Greek myth. The Adonis legend is known as follows: When Adonis was killed by a wild boar, the grief of the goddess moved Persephone, Queen of Hades, to allow him to spend six months of the year on earth and six in the underworld. -

1 The Machine at the Mad Monster Party Mad Monster Party (dir. Jules Bass, 1967) is a beguiling film: the superb Rankin/Bass “Animagic” stop-motion animation is burdened by interminable pacing, the celebrity voice cast includes the terrific Boris Karloff and Phyllis Diller caricaturing themselves but with flat and contradictory dialogue, and its celebration of classic Universal Studios movie monsters surprisingly culminates in their total annihilation in the film’s closing moments. The plot finds famous Dr. Baron Boris von Frankenstein convening his “Worldwide Organization of Monsters” to announce both his greatest discovery, a “formula which can completely destroy all matter,” and his retirement, where he will surprisingly be succeeded not by a monster but by something far worse: a human, his nebbish pharmacist nephew Felix Flanken. Naturally, this does not sit well with the current membership, nor even Felix, who is exposed to monsters for the first time in his life and is petrified at what he sees. Thus, a series of classic monsters team up to try to knock off Felix and take over for Baron Frankenstein: Dracula, The Werewolf, The Mummy, The Invisible Man, Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Frankenstein’s Monster, The Monster's Mate, King Kong (referred to only as “It”), Yetch (an ersatz Peter Lorre/Igor hybrid), and Francesca, the buxom red-head secretary. Much of the plot’s comedy is that Felix is so humanly clueless: glasses-wearing, naive, constantly sneezing, he fails to recognize the monsters’ horribleness and manages to avoid their traps mainly by accident and dumb luck. -

Forum on Public Policy Mary Shelley: Teaching and Learning through Frankenstein Theresa M. Girard, Adjunct Professor, Central Michigan University Abstract In the writing of Frankenstein, Mary Shelley was able to change the course of women’s learning, forever. Her life started from an elite standpoint as the child of Mary Wollstonecraft and William Godwin. As such, she was destined to grow to be a major influence in the world. Mary Shelley’s formative years were spent with her father and his many learned friends. Her adult years were spent with her husband, Percy Bysshe Shelley, and their literary friends. It was on the occasion of the Shelleys’ visit to Lord Byron at his summer home that Mary Shelley was to begin her novel which changed the course of women’s ideas about safety and the home. No longer were women to view staying in the home as a means to staying safe and secure. While women always knew that men could be unreliable, Mary Shelley openly acknowledged that fact and provided a forum from which it could be discussed. Furthermore, women learned that they were vulnerable and that, in order to insure their own safety, they could not entirely depend upon men to rescue them; in fact, in some cases, women needed to save themselves from the men in their lives, often with no one to turn to except themselves and other women. There are many instances where this is shown throughout Frankenstein, such as: Justine’s prosecution and execution and Elizabeth’s murder. Mary Shelley educated women in the most fundamental of ways and continues to do so through every reading of Frankenstein. -

The Body Project: Anatomy, Relationships, and Representation An Interdisciplinary Graduate Student Conference University of Missouri Presented April 12, 2008 Erin Gore-Wilson MU Department of English Oral Presentation The Death of Maternity: Decaying Female Bodies in Mary Shelley’s Fiction In this paper, I examine the trope of the dying woman in Mary Shelley’s early works, including Frankenstein, Mathilda, and her short fiction. Critics are in general agreement that two of Frankenstein’s essential subjects are the trauma of creation and the dire consequences of child abandonment. Mary Shelley’s fiction is riddled with dead mothers and young women wasting away as a result of male action. Maternity is appropriated by patriarchy in Mary Shelley’s fiction; this usurpation of motherhood is always at the expense of the female body. Mary Shelley creates worlds in which procreation is male- centered and results in the destruction of otherwise fertile female bodies. The deaths of young women plagued Mary Shelley’s life. Her mother, Mary Wollstonecraft died within a month of giving birth as a result of an infection related to unsanitary obstetric conditions. In addition, she lived through the deaths of her niece Allegra, her half-sister Fanny Imlay, and her daughter Clara, all within the first two decades of her life. These painful losses are reflected in her writing, as young women are systematically killed off. In Frankenstein, the older mother, Caroline, is sacrificed to pave the way for the younger, more fertile Elizabeth. Once Victor has mastered male- centered creation, both Elizabeth and Justine can be eliminated. Victor’s phallocentric creation is grotesque and disturbing, not only because he animates dead flesh, but because he immediately abandons his “child.” Frankenstein’s use of the body ultimately serves as a metaphor for the destructive force of all male-dominated creation, including artistic creation. -

From Poet to Poet or Shelley’s Inconsistencies in Keats’s Panegyric: Adonais as an Autobiographical Work of Art by Caroline Bertonèche (Paris 3) Adonais, in short, is such an elegy as poet might be expected to write upon poet. The author has had before him his recollections of Lycidas, of Moschus and Bion, and of the doctrines of Plato; and in the stanza of the most poetical of poets, Spenser, has brought his own genius, in all its ethereal beauty, to lead a pomp of Loves, Graces, and Intelligences, in honour of the departed. (Leigh Hunt, “Unsigned Review of Adonais”, The Examiner, 7 juillet 1822)1 I have engaged these last days in composing a poem on the death of John Keats, which will shortly be finished; and I anticipate the pleasure of reading it to you, as some of the very few persons who will be interested in it and understand it. It is a highly wrought piece of art, perhaps better in point of composition than anything I have written. (Lettre de Shelley à John et Maria Gisborne, 5 juin 1821, Complete Works, X 270) When Shelley said of Adonais, not long after its completion, that it was its most accomplished piece of art, “better in point of composition than anything [he] ha[d] written” while mentioning, in his Preface, the “feeble tribute of applause” (Shelley’s Poetry and Prose 392) it nonetheless represents, he does not to seem to want to hide his own sense of personal satisfaction, nor does he fail to confess certain obvious limitations in his work as a Romantic elegist. -

About the Authors
About the Authors Moira Ferguson was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and took a B.A. at the University of London and a Ph.D. at the University of Washing- ton. She is an associate professor of English at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and former chairwoman of women's studies. She has been a fellow of the Henry E. Huntington Library and has received an American Council of Learned Societies Award and an American Association of University Women Founders Fellowship. Her scholarly articles and reviews have appeared in such journals as Philological Quarterly, Minnesota Review, Signs, English Language Notes, Romantic Movement, Wordsworth Circle, Victorian Studies^ and Women's Studies International Forum. She is the compiler and editor of First Feminists: British Women Writers 1578-1799 (1983). She is currently preparing a study of women's protest writings in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Janet Todd, fellow of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, was born in Llandrindod-Wells, Wales. She took a B.A. at the University of Cambridge and a Ph.D. at the University of Florida. From 1964 to 1967 she taught in Ghana, mainly at the University of Cape Coast, and from 1972 to 1974 at the University of Puerto Rico. Since then, until 1983, she was professor of English at Rutgers University. She has been the recipient of NEH and ACLS awards and of a Guggen- heim Fellowship. Urizar Department of Biological Sciences College of Science and Mathematics Faculty Mentor: Todd Hoffman, Ph.D., Department of English and Foreign Languages The story of Frankenstein is typically seen as a battle between Victor Frankenstein and the “monster” of the story. However I argue that that the real “monster” of the story is in fact Victor Frankenstein who is suffering from paranoid schizophrenia and that the “monster” is really just a delusions that Victor uses to cope with the idea that he in fact is the killer of the story. This concept is evident in the fact that no one in the story has ever seen both Victor Frankenstein and the “monster” alive in the same place. The characteristics of the “monster’ also point towards the idea that the “monster” could not possibly exist. Even the way that Victor acts throughout the book point to the idea that he does not really care for the safety of his loved ones. -

"YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN" SCREENPLAY by GENE WILDER FIRST DRAFT FADE IN: EXT. FRANKENSTEIN CASTLE A BOLT OF LIGHTNING! A CRACK OF THUNDER! On a distant, rainy hill, the old Frankenstein castle, as we knew and loved it, is illuminated by ANOTHER BOLT OF LIGHTNING. MUSIC: AN EERIE TRANSYLVANIAN LULLABY begins to PLAY in the b.g. as we MOVE SLOWLY CLOSER to the castle. It is completely dark, except for one room -- a study in the corner of the castle -- which is only lit by candles. Now we are just outside a rain-splattered window of the study. We LOOK IN and SEE: INT. STUDY - NIGHT An open coffin rests on a table we can not see it's contents. As the CAMERA SLOWLY CIRCLES the coffin for a BETTER VIEW... A CLOCK BEGINS TO CHIME: "ONE," "TWO," "THREE," "FOUR..." We are ALMOST FACING the front of the coffin. "FIVE," "SIX," "SEVEN," "EIGHT..." The CAMERA STOPS. Now it MOVES UP AND ABOVE the satin-lined coffin. "NINE," "TEN," "ELEVEN," "T W E L V E!" CUT TO: THE EMBALMED HEAD OF BEAUFORT FRANKENSTEIN Half of still clings to the waxen balm; the other half has decayed to skull. Below his head is a skeleton, whose bony fingers cling to a metal box. A HAND reaches in to grasp the metal box. It lifts the box halfway out of the coffin -- the skeleton's fingers rising, involuntarily, with the box. Then, as of by force of will, the skeleton's fingers grab the box back and place it where it was. Now the "Hand" -- using its other hand -- grabs the box back from the skeleton's fingers. -

For more information, please contact [email protected]. 1 The apocalypse has been written about as many times as it hasn’t taken place, and imagined ever since creation mythologies logically mandated destructive counterparts. Interest in the apocalypse never seems to fade, but what does change is what form that apocalypse is thought to take, and the ever-keen question of what comes after. The most classic Western version of the apocalypse, the millennial Judgement Day based on Revelation – an absolute event encompassing all of humankind – has given way in recent decades to speculation about political dystopias following catastrophic war or ecological disaster, and how the remnants of mankind claw tooth-and-nail for survival in the aftermath. Desolate landscapes populated by cannibals or supernatural creatures produce the awe that sublime imagery, like in the paintings of John Martin, once inspired. The Byronic hero reincarnates in an extreme version as the apocalyptic wanderer trapped in and traversing a ruined world, searching for some solace in the dust.
