In this committee, we will be looking at the Golden Age of Piracy, a period of history that has captured the imaginations of writers and filmmakers for decades. People have long been enthralled by the swashbuckling tales of pirates, their fame multiplied by famous books and movies such as Treasure Island, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Peter Pan. But more often than not, these portrayals have been misrepresentations, leading to a multitude of inaccuracies regarding pirates and their lifestyle. This committee seeks to change this. In the late 1710s, nearly all pirates in the Caribbean operated out of the town of Nassau, on the Bahamian island of New Providence. From there, they ravaged shipping lanes and terrorized the Caribbean’s law-abiding citizens, striking fear even into the hearts of the world’s most powerful empires. Eventually, the British had enough, and sent a man to rectify the situation — Woodes Rogers. In just a short while, Rogers was able to oust most of the pirates from Nassau, converting it back into a lawful British colony. -

Update from the Queen Anne's Revenge Shipwreck Project Volume 5, Number 1 Spring 2005 Origins of the Queen Anne's Revenge Recently we had an inquiry from Nick Glenister in England asking about information that would help him build "a reasonably accurate model of the Queen Anne's Revenge". We asked Dave Moore, Curator of Nautical Archaeology at the North Carolina Maritime Museum, to reply. Remember that the QAR is believed to have originally been the French ship, Concorde, captured, refitted, and renamed by Blackbeard. Dave gave such a good response that we excerpted parts of it for your information. "The museum has actually had a hypothetical model constructed although no plans or drawings have been generated from that effort. We did quite a bit of research leading up to the construction and ended up using data from Jean Boudriot's treatise on the French merchant ship, Mercure.c.1730, as the primary framework for building the model. We figured we were probably safe building a model of an early 18th century French merchant ship. But there were two things wrong with that assumption that have come to light through additional research over the past couple of years. We now suspect the Concorde may have been built along the lines of a typical light French frigate, hence a bit different from our current model. Also, a document located in French archives strongly suggests that Blackbeard exchanged the ship, shortly after taking her, for a similar sized and armed English ship that may make all our assumptions mute. So, bottom line, we simply do not know what the QAR may have looked like apart from a general idea of her size, numerous guns, and three masts. -

I am very excited to have all of you as a part of my committee to learn and explore the era that is the Golden Era of Piracy. My name is Sarah Hlay and I will be your Crisis Director for this committee. I am a junior at Kutztown University and this is my fourth semester as a part of Kutztown Model UN. This is my second Kumunc but first time running my own crisis. I am excited for you all to be part of my first crisis and to use creative problem solving together over the course of our committee. Pirate history is something that has always fascinated me and is a topic I enjoy learning more about each day. I’m excited to share my love and knowledge of this topic within one of the best eras that have existed. I hope to learn as much from me as I will from you. At Kutztown, I am studying Art Education and although I am not part of the Political Science department does not mean that debating and creative thinking is something I’m passionate about. -

Further Reading 56 3 Foreword The Bristol Channel was for many centuries one of the most important waterways of the World. Its ports had important trading connections with areas on every continent. Bristol, a well-established medieval port, grew rich on the expansion of the British Empire from the seventeenth century onwards, including the profits of the slave trade. The insatiable demand for Welsh steam coal in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries gave the ports of south Wales an importance in global energy supplies comparable to that of the Persian Gulf ports today. There was also much maritime activity within the confines of the Channel itself, with small sailing vessels coming to south Wales from Devon and Somerset to load coal and limestone, pilot cutters sailing out to meet incoming vessels and paddle steamers taking Bristolians and Cardiffians alike for a day out in the bracing breezes of the Severn Sea. By today, most of this activity has disappeared, and the sea and its trade no longer play such an integral part in the commercial activity of places such as Bristol and Cardiff. Indeed, it is likely that more people now go out on the Severn Sea for pleasure rather than for profit. We cannot and must not forget, however, that the sea has shaped our past, and knowing about, and understanding that process should be the birthright of every child who lives along the Bristol Channel today – on whichever side! That is why I welcome this pioneering resource pack, and I hope that it will find widespread use in schools throughout the area. -

Emmanuel Heath, a local reverend, described the event, “I found the ground rowling [growling] and moving under my feet... we heard the Church and Tower fall... and made toward Morgan’s Fort, which being a wide open place, I thought to be there securest from the falling houses; But as I made toward it, I saw the Earth open and swallow up a multitude of people, and the sea 1 mounting in upon us over the fortifications.” This historic natural disaster caused two-thirds of the city to be swallowed into the Caribbean Sea, killing an estimated 2,000 people at the time of the earthquake, and another 2,000 from injury, disease, and extreme lawlessness in the days following. -

The Spanish treasure fleet of 1750 sailed from Havana late in August of that year into uncertain waters. England and Spain, in fact, had been at war since 1739. Like many such contests between great empires throughout history, the initial Anglo-Spanish conflict and the larger war of 1744-48 had ended in little more than a draw.
