[generalNote]: Hanes gweinyddol / Braslun bywgraffyddol | Administrative history | Biographical sketch Nodyn | Note Tom Macdonald (1899-1980), novelist, short story writer and journalist, was brought up in Llandre, Cardiganshire, where his father, an Irish tinker, had settled. He was educated at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, and then worked as a journalist and editor for the Western Mail and the Daily Express. He travelled extensively during his forty-year career in this profession, working in China, Japan, Australia and Africa, before returning to Wales in 1965. In addition to his journalistic articles, he produced a considerable amount of fiction, much of which was published and broadcast; this included a number of autobiographical novels, short stories, stories from Africa, China and Australia, children's novels, plays, and novels dealing with apartheid and wildlife in South Africa. Responsibility for his dealings with publishers was taken on by his family after his death in 1980. (dyddiad creu) | (date of creation) Natur a chynnwys | Scope and content: Drafts of 'Lord of the Valley', an unpublished novel written while the author was in receipt of a bursary from the Welsh Arts Council. It is set in the Bow Street area (near Aberystwyth, Ceredigion). The principal character is a wealthy farmer. There are two versions of this novel. One, the 'A' text (see nos 6-8) is set in the present (mid 1970s). This version was completed by the author. The other version, the 'B' text (see nos 9-10), which begins with the principal character's youth in the early twentieth century, does not appear to have been completed. Guests included OEs, former staff and other friends and associates of the house. their families who had been able to attend: Culain Morris (housemaster 1980–88); Lisa Young, Richard Young and Ros Ford (wife and children of Mike Young, housemas- ter 1965–80); and Fiona Storrs and Alison Charman (daughters of Robert Storrs, housemaster 1933–53).
