Above all and everything, Alhamdulillah 3 Abstract Reviews of the literature found that the Malaysian Third Sector lacks basic descriptive information. Not being adequately described could make the sector’s impact and contribution to the economy difficult to quantify and may give the impression that its functions and contributions are less significant. It could also be difficult to develop policies that effectively address the needs of the stakeholders without sufficient knowledge of what the sector entails. An in-depth understanding of the sector could also make resource allocation more efficient. This research asks: who are the constituents of the Malaysian Third Sector, how are they regulated, what are their activities and who are their beneficiaries? What are the motivations for their existence? The study employed a convergent parallel mixed method to address these questions and conducted the qualitative and quantitative strands concurrently but independently. Interviews with Third Sector actors and Regulators were undertaken to obtain a deeper understanding of the sector. The respondents, apart from the Regulators, were selected via a nonprobability purposive sampling method and was selected from the stratified population of Malaysian Third Sector organisations. Theories explaining the Malaysian Third Sector were identified based on data obtained from the interviews. The quantitative exercise involves merging the organisational databases of seven different Regulators to come up with a unified Malaysian Third Sector Dataset and classified according to the categories of the International Classification for Non-Profit Organisations (ICNPO). The statistical software ‘Stata’ was employed to classify Malaysian Third Sector organisations into the relevant ICNPO categories and was done based on keywords in their names that describe their activities and/or beneficiaries. This research contributes to the body of knowledge in the form of an improved account of the Malaysian Third Sector including theories applicable to the sector. It concludes with suggestions of potential areas for further research to enhance these findings. 4 Table of Contents Declaration The first phase began with the founding of the International Badminton Federation in 1934 and 17 badminton associations before the Second World War. The second phase began after the War with the first Thomas Cup contest won by Malaya in 1949. From 1946 to 1979, Malaysia won the Cup 4 times and Indonesia, 7 times. In 1979 twenty-six countries competed for the Cup. The third phase began with China's membership into the IBF in 1981. From 1982 to 2010 China won the Thomas Cup 8 times, Indonesia won 6 times and Malaysia, only once.

I believe that readers will perceive originality, diversity, and fruitfulness from reading these six papers. The process of birth is long but worth of waiting. Editing papers for ASMR is challenging but worth of trying. The exchanges among me and authors, reviewers, assistant editors, Chiwen and Cathy, make the birth of ASMR memorable. This thesis is an endeavor to explore how ‘power’ could affect the dynamic of communication and relationships between actors. Power has been chosen as the central theme as a way of building new theory about public relations as proposed by Curtin and Gaither (2005). The same thing can be seen from the sports studies literature, particularly in the relationship between the three main actors in sports; NGB, Media and Sponsors. The investigation of public relations activities in sports is due to the fact, as shown in the sports studies literature, that there was a lack of recognition of the role of public relations in sports. To provide answers for the above aims, this thesis employed the critical, cultural research approach. Bourdieu (1991) conception of capital together with Berger’ (2005) dimension of power relations were used to frame the study. Using a semi-structured interviews, data of this research gathered from respondents based on a purposive sampling technique. The data was analysed using a thematic analysis approach where seven central themes emerged. The findings in this research suggest that power or capital does affect the dynamics of communication and relationship between actors. The implications of this thesis is that it managed to map the dimension of power relations based on the capital possessed by the actors.

Prof. Dr Abdul Hafidz Haji Omar, Dr. Norazman Abdul Majid, Miss Fatimah Puteh Faculty of Education, University Technology Malaysia Faculty of Management and Human Resource Development University Technology Malaysia Introduction Malaysia is a multicultural country consisting of many different races. The three major races are the Malays, Chinese and Indians. Each of these races practices different religion, custom, rituals, language and belief system. Their choices of sporting activity by these different races were much influenced by what was practiced by their forefathers. During the colonial occupation and even immediately after Malaysia gained its independence in 1957, there was segregation of the 3 main races with each race dominating only certain areas of Malaysia; the Chinese congregated around the town areas specifically controlling the tin-mines industry, the Malays were seen mostly in the paddy plantation industry while the Indians dominating the rubber plantation industry. This paper will firstly outline some history of Malaysians sport and highlight how the choices of the sporting activities were much influenced by the belief system of the different races in Malaysia. The Portuguese, the Dutch, the Japanese and the British colonized Malaysia before it eventually gained its independence from the British in 1957. The British colonization had the greatest impact on Malaysia especially in terms of the total strata of the country. During its occupation, the British brought in with them the Chinese into the country to man the mining industry and Indians into the country. These new residents in the country brought along with them their luggage, customs, belief system, religion and rituals and even their preferences for different sporting activities.

Thirty-eight players of sepak takraw with the mean age 16.21 (0.93) years old participated in this study. A total 12 anthropometric measurements and sepak takraw performance ability were examined. The PCA revealed nine anthropometric parameters as most significant in sepak takraw. The significant parameters were then classified into two group of expertise labeled as high (HPT) and low performance team (LPT) using HACA. DA standard mode exposed hip circumference and performance ability are the best parameter to differentiate between the two groups, whereas both stepwise forward and backward exposed performance ability is significant parameter. The present study identified hip circumference and performance ability as foretelling factors of performance in sepak takraw. Ahmad Arif bin Astaman Birkbeck, University of London Volume 10, Number 3, December 2017 Copyright © Ahmad Arif bin Astaman Abstract This study was conducted to determine the extent to which good governance principles are understood and adopted by national sport associations, with a particular focus on Malaysia. The selection of this area is to fill a particular gap in the understanding of how good governance is experienced and where applicable, embraced by national sport organisations, which current literature shows to be dominated by a Western context. While the origins and contemporary developments of corporate and public governance is influenced heavily by ‘Anglo-American’ thinking and circumstances, the atypical nature of sporting organisations in national contexts suggests that a uniform experience of governance adoption therein to be quite unlikely, thus making this an interesting investigation. Due to the absence of an overarching theoretical or conceptual framework to understand good governance in national sport organisations, this study uses the inductive methodology of grounded theory, specifically the Gioia method (Gioia et. al., 2013), to empirically establish how good governance is perceived by insider and outsider informants from four different sports in Malaysia. Semi-structured interviews were the primary method of data collection, with documentary analysis as the secondary. Upon analysis, it was found that there was a basic understanding of good governance amongst the study’s subjects, that this paper contends to be attributable to the unique role of government in the development and delivery of modern sport in Malaysia.

    SPORT, POLITICS AND ETHNICITY: PLAYING BADMINTON FOR INDONESIA1 Colin Brown2 Faculty of Media, Society and Culture Curtin University of Technology The scholarly study of sport – in which ‘sports are viewed as cultural products that develop within sociohistorical contexts’3 -- is now well-established. However, the literature suffers from two important and related defects. One of these defects is its geographical focus. As van Bottenburg notes in his study Global Games the scholarly literature on sport: ‘is mainly limited to developments in the Western world. Information on the other continents is at best fragmentary, often collected in wide- ranging surveys’.4 In particular, relatively little has been written on sport and politics in the Asian context. South Asia is perhaps best served, for reasons which are mentioned below, but even here the coverage is slight compared with that of Europe and North America. The second defect is that the sports which have been studied are overwhelmingly those of European/North American origin, and in which peoples from these two traditions are still dominant. Very little has been written on sports where Europeans and Americans are not dominant, or at least major participants. In part, this undoubtedly reflects the cultural and ethnic origins of most sports scholars. In this study, the defining development of knowledge among “A”, “B” and “C” licenced football coaches in Malaysia (N = 12) were examined from the perspective of identifying their sources of knowledge. In-depth semi-structured interviews were used to explore how participants accumulate their knowledge. Probe questions were also used to explore ideographic themes and issues relevant to each interviewee. The data was initially analysed through creating electronic written transcripts of the participant’s answer during the interviews. Following the principle of Strauss & Corbin’s, (1990) EGT, data construction, data deconstruction and data reconstruction stages were systematically conducted. Results showed sources of knowledge category emerged as a central overarching category. Based on the analysis, the following seven sub-categories emerged that make up the Source of Knowledge category; i) coaching courses and formal education courses, ii) foreign and international experience iii) video and game observation iv) learning from mentors and others v) trial and error/ squad sessions vi) past playing experience and vii) coaches networking.
