The purpose of the ‘five continents series’ is to commemorate some of the many inspirational women who have worked in physical education, sport and dance to increase opportunities for girls and women around the world. We thank Eliana Ferreira whose project led to the University of Juiz de Fora (Brazil) partnering IAPESGW on this unique venture. Inspirational women: Making a difference in physical education, sport and dance is a five book series and IAPESGW is proud to say that members of the voluntary Executive Board stepped up to collect, edit and present each of these books for the series. We also thank the members of the Association who were the major contributors and facilitators of contacts that made this ambitious idea a success. Oceania – Janice Crosswhite OAM (Australia). Europe – Rosa Diketmüller (Austria). Americas – Beatriz Ferreira (Brazil). Africa – Anneliese Goslin (South Africa). Asia – Canan Koca (Turkey). The series will increase the visibility of women in the field across the world by profiling women’s lives and achievements. It is 7 by no means an exhaustive collection of outstanding women. There will be many others who have been influential as roles models and leaders. But it offers a contribution in a world where men and male sports still dominate newspapers and television broadcasts alongside the history books of modern sport. The editor of each book in this series had the autonomy to manage the collation of the volume as she preferred. She was also tasked with contextualising the continent in the introduction, offering a rationale and synopsis of the distinctive content and concluding each volume. The books are published by the research group "Núcleo do Grupo de Pesquisa em Inclusão, Movimento e Ensino a Distância [NGIME]" (Research Group on Inclusion, Movement and Distance Learning) coordinated by Eliana Ferreira – University of Juiz da Fora, it is a major publication project sponsor by the Brazilian government. It is expected that the books will be distributed to the Brazilian Universities and to attendees at ICSEMIS, Brazil 2016. The International Association of Physical Education and Sport for Girls and Women The International Association of Physical Education and Sport for Girls and Women (IAPESGW) was formed in 1949 and is the longest serving voluntary organization supporting the advancement of girls and women in Physical Education, Sport, Dance and Physical Activity. Our Aims are: 1 To bring together interested scholars and practitioners of many countries working to improve the position of girls and women in the fields of physical education, sport and physical activity. 8 2 To represent the interests of girls and women at all levels and in all areas of physical education, sport and physical activity. 3 To strengthen international contacts and networks. 4 To afford opportunities for the discussion of mutual challenges and to share good practice. 5 To promote exchanges of persons and ideas among countries. 6 To promote research on physical education, sport and physical activity for girls and women. 7 To co-operate with other associations and agencies working to promote the interests of girls and women in physical education, sport and physical activity. 8 To promote leadership development throughout the world. Our Vision: Throughout the world, girls and women will benefit from: y Participation in physical education, sport, physical activity and dance. y Improved health through physical activity for all. y Scientifically-based information. y Quality education. 9 Ultimately, throughout the world, girls and women will be empowered through physical activity to: enjoy a balanced and healthy lifestyle, achieve a sense of value and well-being and make a positive contribute to society. Members of the Association share belief in the value of physical activity in the lives of all girls and women, thereby forming a network of voices of, and for, the support of girls and women, improving their position at local, national and global levels. All members supporting IAPESGW at national and international level are volunteers who are driven to make time and space for stronger international support and camaraderie that networks like IAPESGW can bring. Over many years IAPESGW has been the place where young or early career researchers have found a supportive and accessible context alongside experienced colleagues in which to embark on presentation and research projects. The Executive Board is strong by global reach and also range of academic and practical experience and skills. Members of the Board are elected every four years and new volunteers who really want to make a difference by serving such an Association are always welcome. The current Executive Board indicates the extent of our international collaboration

OFF THE BEATEN TRACK: WOMEn’s SPORT IN IRAN Islamic women’s sport appears to be a contradiction in terms - at least this is what many in the West believe. … In this respect the portrayal of the development and the current situation of women’s sports in Iran is illuminating for a variety of reasons. It demonstrates both the opportunities and the limits of women in a country in which Islam and sport are not contradictions.1 – Gertrud Pfister – As the London 2012 Olympics approached, issues of women athletes from Muslim majority countries were splashed across the headlines. When the Iranian women’s football team was disqualified from an Olympic qualifying match because their hejab did not conform to the uniform code, Small Media began researching the history, structure and representation of women’s sport in Iran. THIS ZINE PROVIDES A glimpsE INto THE sitUatioN OF womEN’S spoRts IN IRAN AND IRANIAN womEN atHLETES. We feature the Iranian sportswomen who competed in the London 2012 Summer Olympics and Paralympics, and explore how the western media addresses the topic of Muslim women athletes. Of course, we had to ground their stories in context, and before exploring the contemporary situation, we give an overview of women’s sport in Iran in the pre- and post- revolution eras. The uses and limits of Turkey’s “sport power” Jean-François Polo 1 For the first time in its fifteen years of brilliant yet unsuccessful candidacies to host the Olympic Games (OG) and the Football European Championships (Euro), Turkey was admitted into the elite group of countries capable of staging sports mega-events. Although it failed in the last round for the 2020 Olympic Games (beaten by Tokyo in 2013), and for the Euro 2016 (beaten by France in 2010), it has since been tipped as the strong favourite to host Euro 2024. International matches have been simultaneously utilized by the Turkish government as an opportunity to publicly demonstrate its willingness to resolve historically problematic issues with other countries, notably Armenia, Greece, and Syria.

Volume 1/Number 1/2007 Asian Sport Management Review Published by Taiwan Society for Sport Management Asian Sport Management Review, 2007, 1 E d i t o r ’ s N o t e ************************************************************************ The first edition means the birth of ASMR. The process of editing first edition of ASMR is long, more than 3 years, but memorable. There are lots of discussions, exchanges among professional members of AASM. Most of AASM members do not use English as their main language, but English is the common language we choose to communicate. The contents of each paper in this edition show the development, important issues, strategies, goals or performance of sport management in its society. They are the impact of SARS on Thailand’s sport development, the historical development description of Taiwan, Mongolia, Malaysia, Japan, and the fitness industry in Vietnam. I believe that readers will perceive originality, diversity, and fruitfulness from reading these six papers. The process of birth is long but worth of waiting. Editing papers for ASMR is challenging but worth of trying. The exchanges among me and authors, reviewers, assistant editors, Chiwen and Cathy, make the birth of ASMR memorable. The fruit of ASMR cannot be realized without support from AASM members, reviewers, authors, TASSM and readers. The feedback and commitment from you, I believe, will make ASMR sustainable. • Israeli Sports – from National Pride to Political Hostility
1 Israeli Sports – From National Pride to Political Hostility Haim KAUFMAN Zinman College, Israel Sports in the State of Israel have always vacillated between two conflicting planes. One is national sports which have been a central component of national identity and a source of national pride. The other is political sports which, as representatives of opposing political sectors in the country, have di- vided the country and have engendered a great deal of hostility and recurrent violence leading to dys- function. The tension between national sports as a tool serving national ends and sports for grinding political axes underlies the entire history of sports in Israel, and only in recent years seems to be gradually dissipating. Sports were created in Pre-Mandatory Israel at the start of the 19th Century and continued develop- ing throughout the Mandate period. With the establishment of the State of Israel, sports came under state authority. Representative sports served the young state's national interests. All-star teams and sports matches became tools for strengthening Israel's international recognition, expanding contact with other countries, increasing ties with Jewish communities in the Diaspora, and attaining prestige and honor. In the early years of the state, Israel's representative championship teams were a source of pride and identification despite their unimpressive results on the playing fields. People still remember the soccer games between Israel and the Soviet Union in 1956. At such encounters Israel was defeated twice. Nevertheless, such games were of great national value, as they strengthened political ties with the former Soviet Union and with Jews behind the "iron curtain" during the Cold War.1 Despite the new official status and national-functional relevancy of Israeli sports, their sectarian na- ture remained essentially the same.

  • Muslim Women Sport Managers in Malaysia
Through Rose-Tinted Glasses: Muslim Women Sport Managers In Malaysia Wirdati Mohd. Radzi University of Malaya, Malaysia Raihanah Abdullah University of Malaya, Malaysia Abstract ‘Modern sport’ has been held to be one of the derivative of the Modernity agen- da (Hargreaves, 2001), a tidal wave of intellectual and political change that swept most of the Western Europe in the 17th century. Few societies had resisted the transition to Modernity as the Muslim. Modern sport poses challenges to Muslim athletes, in that it conflicts with Muslim practices (Haji Omar & Gilbert, 2000). Women issues on the other hand took shape amidst the typically patriarchal policy development processes, whether it is within the religious, socio-legal, cultural, eco- nomic or political context (Abdullah, 2003; Omar & Hamzah, 2003). In the study of women, few would draw much controversy than the study of Muslim women. The image of a ‘burka’-clad individual isolated from the rest of the world is per- haps the most common association made of a Muslim female. This paper would focus on ascertaining the role of Malaysian Muslim women through evaluation of the experiences of Muslim women as sport managers within the structure of the local sport governance. The discourse would also draw on the literatures of the women and sport in the West as comparison (Radzi 2006; Riphenburg, 1998; Roded, 1999; Sfeir, 1985; Stowasser, 1998; Walseth & Fasting, 2003) Key words muslim women, sport management, Malaysia Introduction This paper would focus on ascertaining the role of Malaysian Muslim women through evaluation of the experiences of Muslim women as sport managers within the structure of the local sport governance.
