Once again Springwood Cricket Club had a very successful season in both the Senior and Junior levels. Whilst we were not successful in winning a Senior premiership, 3 of our 6 Senior teams made it to the semi finals with the 1 st and 3rd grade teams defeated in the Final. The debacle that surrounded the 3 rd grade Final was a cross between Laurel & Hardy and the Marx Brothers!! What is most important to note about our Senior Club is that there was a 20% decline in the overall numbers across the district for senior teams yet, we were able to increase our numbers with an additional team from the previous season. All in all, it was a good year for some and a tougher year for others but there is a great vibrancy within our senior club. The juniors were again strong with Springwood securing 2 premierships. The Under 12 ( 1 ) team defended their premiership win from last season whilst the Under 10 ( Tigers ) went through the competition undefeated, a mighty effort!! The Under 16 ( 2 ) team made it to the semis whilst all of our other junior teams were very competitive. On behalf of the Committee I would like to thank everyone from the Coaches and Managers to the Parents and most importantly to the young people who represent this Club each and every week- end. Your Committee was again a pillar of administrative capacity. This is a very good group of people who are inherently dedicated to ensuring that Springwood Cricket Club remains viable in a highly competitive sporting environment. I would personally like to thank all of the members of the Committee for their selfless commitment to this great Club. Also, I would like to acknowledge and thank the various sponsors of the club for their continued support. In closing my report I wish to advise that after some 12 years as the President of this Club I will not be seeking nomination to the position next season. Whilst this is not an easy decision it really is time to step aside. This Club does need a fresh face with new ideas to take this next generation of cricketers forward. I am very proud to have served this Club for such a long time and I wish everyone associated with our Club the very best of what every direction their future takes them. Peter Filmer 3 PERPETUAL TROPHY WINNERS SENIOR PLAYER OF THE YEAR Sam Pointon The Senior Player of the Year is awarded to the player deemed to have achieved the most outstanding and consistent on field results during the season. Over the history of the award there have been some great cricketers to win the award. This year is no different with Sam Pointon scoring runs & taking loads of wickets to take out the award. Sam scored 298 runs in first grade at an average of almost 25 and took 33 wickets at an average of 12.61. Batting in the top to middle order, Sam batted very maturely and was a very consistent performer. He was a big influence with bat, ball, and the field, with his most memorable moment coming in the final when he took match figure of 9 for 82 off 30 overs. This perpetual trophy is awarded in recognition to the hard work and dedication Ron gave to this club during his time at Springwood. This year’s winner embodies that same hard work & dedication. Bradley Filmer was elected to the committee as Social Secretary and did an outstanding job. Brad also coached the under 16/2 team & served on the senior selection panel. Brad also captained our 1st Grade team in the senior competition. Brad’s hard work & dedication are a big part of Springwood’s success. Sam batted with lots of maturity for his 65 which included 2 massive sixes. With the ball he took a majestic 4-29 off 6 overs & was also on a Hat-trick. Mick Ross, Paul Petterson & Jason Crosara all chipped in with wickets to help keep Glenmore Park to a score of 150.Sam’s brilliant 65 pushed Springwood to 5/119 when the rain came & Springwood won on run rate & take it’s record on Back to Springwood Day to six wins and no losses. Pete has been central to this club for as long as I've been associated with it and I was thrilled that the Club was able to formally acknowledge Pete's many year contribution with the unveiling this year of the 'Peter Filmer Honour Board'. One of our driving values at the Club remains 'Increasing Participation in Cricket' and to this extent, season 2009/10 exceeded our expectations of success (even for Springwood Cricket) both on and off the field.

This approach to our game starts from our Milo Have-A Go program co-ordinated by Adam Thomas through to our Under 8’s a to Under 16 competitions right through to our seniors. In addition, as with all years, there is much that also goes on behind the scenes by many people to enable our cricketers to take the field and I’m very grateful for these ever passionate volunteers for their time and energies.

It's only as the years roll by that we're reminded of our own mortality, as more and more of our friends and relatives pass away. For every death that's expected, due to declining health, there's another that leaves us lost for words. Tom Maynard's death falls into the second category. Surrey have been there before, with the loss of Graham Kersey at the end of 1996 and Ben Hollioake at the beginning of 2002. But the sight of a once-occupied corner of the dressing room isn't something the players have had to come to terms with during a season. As Alec Stewart said to me, when I bumped into him up at Edgbaston: "It's something these lads have never had to deal with before. Most of them still have both their parents." While it came as a shock, I was, at the time, in fact I am still, coming to terms with the death of a friend and work colleague, who was just 52 when he died of a heart attack back in April.
