When Dutch school children are about 11 or 12 years old – and I remember this clearly –, they participate in what is called the CITO test: an elaborate assessment that provides 1 information on a child’s progress on skills like reading ability and mathematics, and helps guide teachers in giving advice on a child’s future school choice. When we grow older and apply for a job, we may be asked to do an assessment that maps the applicant’s desirable skills and traits, and for a person with mental health problems, measurement instruments like the Beck Depression Inventory or the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale might help in determining the appropriate diagnosis. In different phases of our lives, we encounter psychometric applications, which can be very influential or even decisive in high-stake situations. Was your job assessment satisfactory to your future employer? Are your SAT scores high enough for admission into a top-notch Ivy-League university? However, even though most of us are familiar with different examples of psychometric applications, psychometrics as a research area is much more mysterious. Psychometrics is a very complex scientific discipline: its content is often highly tech nical, heavily embedded in statistics, and its connection with psychological or edu- cational applications is often difficult to grasp (and sometimes, on the face of it, non- existent). These aspects make psychometrics’ purposes, goals, values, and concepts hard to understand for an outsider who is not part of the psychometric community. So, what is it that psychometricians actually do, and why do they do it? In this dissertation, I explore different aspects of the scientific domain of psychometrics – its disciplinary structure, its historical development, its practices, its models, and its values – to improve our understanding of this lesser-known and complex discipline. Psychometrics as understood in this dissertation is the field that concerns itself with the measurement and prediction of human behavior. Psychometric research usually entails a thorough investigation into the development and/or application of one or more psychometric models, which are often members of the families of Item Response Theory (IRT, Embretson & Reise, 2000; Van der Linden & Hambleton, 2013), Structural Equation Modeling (SEM, Jöreskog, 1970; 1973), Multidimensional Scaling (Kruskal & Wish, 1978), and, particularly at my university, Network Models (Borsboom & Cramer, 2013; Epskamp, Rhemtulla, & Borsboom, 2017). IRT models are tools for analyzing testing data (item responses), by modeling the relationship between item responses and a latent variable (an unobservable characteristic or attribute such as reading ability or intelligence). Structural Equation Modeling is a method for analyzing structural analyses among two or more latent variables, for example, the structural relationship between reading ability and spatial reasoning. Scientific psychology began with a commitment to the study of mind, but based on the method of introspection. Watson rejected introspectionism as both unreliable and effete, and redefined psychology, instead, as the science of behaviour. The cognitive revolution, in turn, replaced the mind as the subject of study, and rejected both behaviourism and a reliance on introspection. This paper argues that all three stages of this history are largely mythical. Introspectionism was never a dominant movement within modern psychology, and the method of introspection never went away. Furthermore, this version of psychology’s history obscures some deep conceptual problems, not least surrounding the modern conception of ‘‘behaviour,’’ that continues to make the scientific study of consciousness seem so weird. Mayer University of New Hampshire A REVIEW AND EVALUATION OF AN OPEN 2 Abstract The Brief Mood Introspection Scale (BMIS) is an open-source, 16-item assessment of current mood regularly used in psychological research. The scale has two sets of scales: one pair of scales assesses mood using Pleasant-Unpleasant and Arousal-Calm dimensions; the other (less used alternative) assesses mood using Positive and Negative Affect. However, since its publication in 1988, there have been no systematic reports of its usage pattern, norms or of evidence for its validity. The present meta-analysis aims to (1) identify the nature of the studies that employed the BMIS (i.e. research areas and design), (2) establish the norms for the BMIS the scale means, standard deviations, and reliabilities, and (3) evaluate for the BMIS’s validity. One hundred and fifty studies that utilized the BMIS over a five-year timespan (2016-2011) were identified, including 27 studies that reported information pertinent to the scale’s norms. Our findings indicated that BMIS was primarily used in experimental research, and that its norms were similar to those from the original report. We make recommendations for use of Likert response scales and scoring conventions. A more qualitative review suggested that the Pleasant- Unpleasant mood scale had considerable evidence for its validity from its relation to criteria.

I was ready to leave home as soon as I finished college. As a child, my grandmother took me on bus trips to California, where beaches and flowering tree gardens lured me away from desert landscapes and endless days of sun. I wrote this chapter during the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020. How coincidental it is to be writing a reflective memoir at a time when it is hard to avoid reflecting. I had not thought I could tackle this project until well into the year, but sequestration at a rented house in South Carolina gave me time and so the pages multiplied in a different way. Green York University, Toronto, Ontario ISSN 1492-3173 Early Psychological Laboratories [1] James McKeen Cattell (1928) First published in Science, 67, 543- 548. Posted August 2000 Laboratories for research and teaching in the sciences are of comparatively recent origin. They may be regarded as part of the industrial revolution, for there is a close parallel in causes and effects between the development of the factory system and of scientific laboratories. The industrial revolution began with the exploitation by machinery of coal and iron in England; it may perhaps be dated from the use of the steam engine of Watts in the coal mines of Cornwall about a hundred and fifty years ago. The laboratory had its origin fifty years later in Germany as part of the scientific renaissance following the Napoleonic wars. The University of Berlin was founded by Wilhelm von Humboldt and Frederich William III in 1810. The first laboratory of chemistry was opened by Justus von Liebig at Giessen in 1824. This was followed by similar laboratories at Göttingen under Wöhler in 1836, at Marburg under Bunsen in 1840, and at Leipzig under Erdmann in 1843. The first English laboratory was the College of Chemistry, now part of the Imperial College of Science and Technology of the University of London, which was opened in 1845 by von Hoffmann, brought from Germany by Prince Albert. Most theories of adult learning are based on research into the learning of children, which in turn is founded upon theories of animal learning. These theories, formulated under laboratory conditions, are artificial at best--and not complex enough to apply to adult human beings. Emerging theories of adult learning, however, are Lased on the unique characteristics of adults as learners and result in differentiated educational practices. Human resource development (BED) is based on many of these newer theories and serves as a guideline for action. Knowles' andragogical theory is based on four assumptions which differ from those of pedagogy: (1) changes in self-concept,(2) the role of experience, (3) readiness to learn, and (4) orientation to learning. As a guideline for developing programs and for selecting andtraining teachers, the andragogical model of HRD is very applicab?e. Among the appendixes are "Is It Skinner or Nothing" and "An Approach to a Differential Psychology of the Adult Potential." There is a eleven-page bibliography.

Devonis, PhD, received his doctorate in the history of psychology from the University of New Hampshire’s erstwhile pro- gram in that subject in 1989 with a thesis on the history of conscious pleasure in modern American psychology. Since then he has taught vir- tually every course in the psychology curriculum in his academic odys- sey from the University of Redlands in Redlands, California, and the now-closed Teikyo Marycrest University (formerly Marycrest College in Davenport, Iowa) to—for the past 17 years—Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa, alma mater of Bruce Jenner and, more famously for the history of psychology, of Noble H. Kelly (1901–1997), eminent con- tributor to psychology’s infrastructure through his many years of ser- vice to the American Board of Examiners in Professional Psychology. Dr. Devonis has been a member of Cheiron: The International Society for the History of Behavioral and Social Sciences since 1990, a con- tributor to many of its activities, and its treasurer for the past 10 years. Currently he is on the editorial board of the American Psychological Association journal History of Psychology and is, with Wade Pickren, coeditor and compiler of the online bibliography History of Psychology in the Oxford Bibliographies Online series.
