Psychological Bulletin © 2012 American Psychological Association 2012, Vol. 138, No. 2, 353–387 0033-2909/12/$12.00 DOI: 10.1037/a0026838 Psychological Correlates of University Students’ Academic Performance: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Michelle Richardson Charles Abraham University College London University of Exeter Rod Bond University of Sussex A review of 13 years of research into antecedents of university students’ grade point average (GPA) scores generated the following: a comprehensive, conceptual map of known correlates of tertiary GPA; assessment of the magnitude of average, weighted correlations with GPA; and tests of multivariate models of GPA correlates within and across research domains. A systematic search of PsycINFO and Web of Knowledge databases between 1997 and 2010 identified 7,167 English-language articles yielding 241 data sets, which reported on 50 conceptually distinct correlates of GPA, including 3 demographic factors and 5 traditional measures of cognitive capacity or prior academic performance. In addition, 42 non-intellective constructs were identified from 5 conceptually overlapping but distinct research do- mains: (a) personality traits, (b) motivational factors, (c) self-regulatory learning strategies, (d) students’ approaches to learning, and (e) psychosocial contextual influences. We retrieved 1,105 independent correlations and analyzed data using hypothesis-driven, random-effects meta-analyses. Significant aver- age, weighted correlations were found for 41 of 50 measures. Univariate analyses revealed that demographic and psychosocial contextual factors generated, at best, small correlations with GPA. Medium-sized correlations were observed for high school GPA, SAT, ACT, and A level scores. Three non-intellective constructs also showed medium-sized correlations with GPA: academic self-efficacy, grade goal, and effort regulation. -

The Club, which started out as a circle consisting of Peirce‘s own students in his logic class, held the total of 43 meetings, with 110 presentations delivered, of which 33 were classified as principal papers. These presentations, as we document in this paper, testify the club‘s impact on the development of the methodology of sciences in the late 19th-century United States. Of particular interest is the close relation of the new and emerging scientific approaches to philosophical, methodological and logical issues discussed by the Club‘s members. -

Introduction Max Fisch estimated that no other graduate philosophy club has had a comparable impact on the progress of research in the US as Peirce‘s Metaphysical Club. What was it, who participated in it and what became of these people? A history of the Metaphysical Club is yet to be written; the current document highlights what strikes as some of the most noteworthy facts that belong to any such historiography. Brown University of California, Los Angeles Southern Methodist University Many prominenttheorists have argued that accurate perceptions of the self, the world, and the future are essential for mental health. Yet considerable research evidence suggests that overly positive self- evaluations, exaggerated perceptions of control or mastery, and unrealistic optimism are characteris- tic of normal human thought. Moreover, these illusions appear to promote other criteria of mental health, including the ability to care about others, the ability to be happy or contented, and the ability to engage in productive and creative work. These strategies may succeed, in large part, because both the social world and cognitive-processingmechanisms impose filters on incoming information that distort it in a positive direction; negativeinformation may be isolated and represented in as unthreat- ening a manner as possible. These positive illusions may be especially useful when an individual receives negative feedback or is otherwise threatened and may be especially adaptive under these circumstances. On Early Applications of Psychology in Music Education

Rideout, Universityof Oklahoma On Early Applications of Psychology in Music Education Granville Stanley Hall (1842-1924) received the first doctoral degree in psychology in the United States (from Harvard, in 1878). After a two- year sojourn to Europe, where he studied the educational system of Germany, Hall returned to America where, in 1881, he was hired by Charles Elliott, president of Harvard University, to deliver a series of lectures on the state of education in Germany. He gave these lectures for teachers in the Boston environs (Ross, 1974, p. 133). In 1882, upon a recommendation from his former professor, William James, Hall was appointed professor of psychology at Johns Hopkins University. Among his students were John Dewey and James McKeen Cattel, both of whom became noted leaders in education in the first half of the twentieth century (Wilson, 1914). In many societies (e.g., the Inuit), boundary crossers are obliged to try to interpret and intercede for those on either side of the boundary. Dr. Rudmin completed a B.A. in philosophy at Bowdoin College in Maine, an M. A. in audiology at SUNY Buffalo, and a Ph.D. in social psychology at Queen University in Ontario. He has lived and worked in the United States, the Philippines, Japan, and since 1978 in Canada. His spouse, Toyoko, is Japanese. Their children are schooled in French. The primary focus of Dr. Rudmin research is the psychology of ownership and possession. He is currently an assistant professor in Queen Faculty of Law and School of Business. History of psychology is his pleasure. Peace is his passion. Summary Peace psychology has a history that is both long and prominent. However, that fact is little known and little appreciated, even among contemporary peace-activist psychologists. This article presents 17 brief biographies of psychologists who are part of this important heritage: Pythagoras, Jeremy Bentham, Franz Brentano, William James, August Forel, Ivan Pavlov, Sigmund Freud, James McKeen Cattell, Mary Whiton Calkins, Alexander Chamberlain, Alfred Adler, William McDougall, Edward Tolman, Gordon Allport, Gustav Ichheiser, Margaret Mead, and Charles Osgood. It is important that more recognition and appreciation be given to the long and prominent history of psychology in peace research and peace activism. -

1879 First psychology laboratory Wilhelm Wundt opens the world’s first experimental laboratory in psychology at the University of Leipzig, Germany. Credited with establishing psychology as an academic discipline, Wundt's students include Emil Kraepelin, James McKeen Cattell, and G. Stanley Hall. 1883 First American psychology laboratory G. Stanley Hall, a student of Wilhelm Wundt, establishes first U.S. experimental psychology laboratory at Johns Hopkins University. 1886 First doctorate in psychology The first doctorate in psychology is given to Joseph Jastrow, a student of G. Stanley Hall at Johns Hopkins University. Jastrow later becomes professor of psychology at the University of Wisconsin and serves as president of the American Psychological Association in 1900. 1888 First professor of psychology The academic title "professor of psychology" is given to James McKeen Cattell in 1888, the first use of this designation in the United States. A student of Wilhelm Wundt's, Cattell serves as professor of psychology at University of Pennsylvania and Columbia University. 1892 APA founded G. Stanley Hall founds the American Psychological Association (APA) and serves as its first president. He later establishes two key journals in the field: American Journal of Psychology (1887) and Journal of Applied Psychology (1917). 1 1896 Functionalism Functionalism, an early school of psychology, focuses on the acts and functions of the mind rather than its internal contents. Its most prominent American advocates are William James and John Dewey, whose 1896 article "The Reflex Arc Concept in Psychology" promotes functionalism. Psychoanalysis The founder of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud, introduces the term in a scholarly paper. Freud's psychoanalytic approach asserts that people are motivated by powerful, unconscious drives and conflicts. -

Morawski* IN 1929 JAMES ANGELL, president of Yale, announced plans for a unique teaching and research center for those fields "directly concerned with the problems of man's individual and group conduct. The purpose is to correlate knowledge and coordinate technique in related fields that greater progress may be made in the understanding of human life. The time has certainly come once again to attempt a fruitful synthesis of knowledge." The New York Times described the experiment as dismantling the disciplinary "Great Wall of China" and compared it with the Renaissance transformation of knowledge.1 The Insti- tute of Human Relations (IHR), as the center was named, received over $4.5 million from the Rockefeller Foundation for its first decade of operation. -

Emphasis is placed on ti-.e importance of the notion of individual differences, the paradigm which has functioned as a major impetus in the development of intelligence testing. Major contributors discussed are: Francis Galton, Granville Stanley Hall, Arnold Gesell, Lightner Witmer, William James and James McKeen Cattell. Itis concluded that the development of the intelligef,ce test was largely a function of the zeitgeist of American society. The lack of innovations made in the assessment of intelligence is seen as a vestige of functionalism in that the currently used instruments meet the minimum needs of the individuals using them--they have great pragmatic value for labeling and placement of individuals into spe.ial programs. PILLSBURY Through most of the beginnings and early fruition of scien- tific psychology, Cattell was a dominant factor in introducing the experimental technique in America. It is true that James and Stanley Hall antedated him; for each the scientific method was grafted upon an older theoretical approach. Neither did much in experiment of the modern type themselves. Hall developed a school of workers, but not quite in the modern method. Cattell on the other hand came in with the experi- mental method, held the first chair in psychology, and developed one of the first laboratories in America. As editor of journals and head of one of the most productive laboratories in America, he was one of the men who presided over the destinies of psychology for generations of scholars. James McKeen Cattell was born in Easton, Pa., May 25, i860. His father was first professor of classics, and from 1863 to 1883 president of Lafayette College. Cattell received his A. B. from Lafayette in 1880, the A. M. in 1883. Follow- ing his graduation he studied for two years in Gottingen, Leip- zig, Paris, and Geneva, then spent the year 1882-83 as fellow at Johns Hopkins. He then returned to Leipzig, where he studied with Wundt and received the Ph.D. in 1886. Cattell's associa- tions with Wundt were very close during this period.
