    THE WORKS OF ART IN THE AGE OF DIGITAL REPRODUCTION THE THEORETICAL BACKGROUND The Impossible Exhibitions project derives from an instance of cultural democracy that has its precursors in Paul Valéry, Walter Benjamin and André Malraux. The project is also born of the awareness that in the age of the digital reproducibility of the work of art, the concepts of safeguarding and (cultural and economic) evaluation of the artistic patrimony inevitably enter not only the work as itself, but also its reproduction: “For a hundred years here, as soon as the history of art has escaped specialists, it has been the history of what can be photographed” (André Malraux). When one artist's work is spread over various museums, churches and private collections in different continents, it becomes almost impossible to mount monograph exhibitions that give a significant overall vision of the great past artist's work. It is even harder to create great exhibitions due to the museum directors’ growing – and understandable – unwillingness to loan the works, as well as the exorbitant costs of insurance and special security measures, which are inevitable for works of incalculable value. (214 x 144 cm.) Provenance Commissioned by Pedro de Toledo Osorio, 5th Marquis of Villafranca del Bierzo (Naples, 6 September 1546 – 17 July 1627), and by direct decent until 2017. This present painting by Giulio Cesare Procaccini, one of the most important painters in seventeenth-century Lombardy, is a significant rediscovery and a major addition to his oeuvre. Amidst a sumptuous architectural background, the Virgin sits at the centre of the scene, tenderly holding Jesus in her arms. She offers the Child’s foot to the oldest of the Magi, so that he can kiss it. The kings attributes of power, the crown and sceptre, lay in the foreground on the right, with his entire attention turned to worshiping the baby. Simultaneously, he offers Jesus a precious golden urn. Next to Mary are several figures attending the event. On the right, a dark- skinned king leans towards the centre of the composition holding an urn with incense. On the opposite side, the third king holds a box containing myrrh and looks upwards to the sky.     Revised 3/11/2019 HISTORY OF THE NATIONAL CATHOLIC COMMITTEE FOR GIRL SCOUTS AND CAMP FIRE By Virginia Reed The present National Catholic Committee for Girl Scouts and Camp Fire dates back to the early days of the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) and the National Catholic Welfare Conference. Although it has functioned in various capacities and under several different names, this committee's purpose has remained the same: to minister to the Catholic girls in Girl Scouts (at first) and Camp Fire (since 1973). Beginnings The relationship between Girl Scouting and Catholic youth ministry is the result of the foresight of Juliette Gordon Low. Soon after founding the Girl Scout movement in 1912, Low traveled to Baltimore to meet James Cardinal Gibbons and consult with him about her project. Five years later, Joseph Patrick Cardinal Hayes of New York appointed a representative to the Girl Scout National Board of Directors. The cardinal wanted to determine whether the Girl Scout program, which was so fine in theory, was equally sound in practice. Satisfied on this point, His Eminence publicly declared the program suitable for Catholic girls. In due course, the four U.S. Cardinals and the U.S. Catholic hierarchy followed suit. In the early 1920's, Girl Scout troops were formed in parochial schools and Catholic women eagerly became leaders in the program. When CYO was established in the early 1930's, Girl Scouting became its ally as a separate cooperative enterprise. In 1936, sociologist Father Edward Roberts Moore of Catholic charities, Archdiocese of New York, studied and approved the Girl Scout program because it was fitting for girls to beome "participating citizens in a modern, social democracy." This support further enhanced the relationship between the Catholic church and Girl Scouting.

    Jerusalem In Renaissance Italy 215 Chapter 9 Jerusalem in Renaissance Italy The Holy Sepulchre on the Sacro Monte of Varallo Bram de Klerck The iconography of St Charles Borromeo (1538–84) contains some interesting instances of the kneeling saint in the immediate vicinity of the recumbent fig- ure of the deceased Christ. The Saviour’s largely nude body, head sometimes still crowned with thorns, is placed on a catafalque or marble slab. An example is a painting executed after 1615 for the Church of Santi Carlo e Giustina in Pa- via, by the Milanese artist Giulio Cesare Procaccini (1574–1625), now in Milan, Pinacoteca di Brera (Fig. 9.1). The work represents St Charles, dressed as a car- dinal, kneeling and looking up to an angel who is pointing at the body of Christ.1 What is especially striking in this painting and images like it is that they suggest the real presence of the sixteenth-century Milanese archbishop at Christ’s bier. By uniting the figures of Christ and St Charles in one and the same space, realistically proportioned to each other, the painters emphasize that, to the saint, the body of the dead Christ is almost tangible. It is as if, long after the biblical events of Christ’s crucifixion and burial, Borromeo found a miraculous way to go back in time some one-and-a-half millennia to find the Saviour’s body inside the hermetically closed tomb. However improbable the scene may appear, these paintings reflect a spe- cific religious experience and practice, as they are documented in the earliest written accounts of Charles Borromeo’s life.

How is reflecting on the daily gospel working for you? In our Lent bulletin/newsletter, I really challenged everyone to spend 1% of your day, 14 minutes and 24 seconds, with the daily gospel. There are purple 1% Challenge cards in church, or you can cut them out from the bulletin (on the cover this week). Note the daily scripture passages of the gospel is on one side of the card. To find the readings, you can use your own bible, a daily hard copy (such as "Living With Christ", or electronic access (from our parish app or the US bishops website usccb.org). Then, following the instructions on the other side of the card, prepare, read (2 or 3 times), reflect (word, phrase, image), respond (what might God be asking of me?) and rest (just be with God) spending the 1% of your day with God. My hope is to have everyone praying from the word of God, to affirm those who already use scriptures in their daily prayer, and to encourage others to try it for this Lent. I challenge you spend 1% of your day in the bible and to pray over the daily gospel.

Costruito essenzialmente a fini militari, per contrastare insurrezioni interne alla città ed attacchi esterni, già dalla fine del XV secolo diverse stanze venivano utilizzate come residenza dagli Estensi. Un passaggio sopraelevato, la cosiddetta Via Coperta, ancora esistente, univa l’edificio militare al Palazzo Ducale (oggi Palazzo Comunale), rendendo particolarmente agevoli gli spostamenti della corte da un complesso all’altro. Tuttavia, soltanto a seguito dell’incendio del 1554 il duca Ercole II d’Este ordinò che il castello fosse radicalmente trasformato da fortezza a palazzo, sede della corte 1 6 MMMusei,usei, ChieseChiese ee PalazziPalazzi MM ducale. Gli imponenti lavori furono condotti principalmente dall’architetto Girolamo da Carpi, che sopraelevò di un piano l’edifico, fece abbattere le merlature e realizzò le balconate marmoree, gli appartamenti ducali e le altane; dopo la morte di Girolamo, avvenuta nel 1556, le opere furono poi terminate da Alberto Schiatti.
