Their making usually reflects a determination on the part of the director or star to see the artist as an alter-ego. Many of them were adaptations of successful literary works, which tempted financial backers by having a ready-made audience based on a pre-established reputation. The sub-genre’s development is explored via the grouping of films with associated themes and the use of case studies.

Like our Northwest Film & Video Festival, which celebrates the unique visions of artists in our community, PIFF seeks to engage, educate, entertain and challenge. We invite you to explore and celebrate not only the art of film, but also the world around you. It is said that film is a universal language—able to transcend geographic, political and cultural boundaries in a singular fashion. In the spirit of Robert Louis Stevenson’s famous observation, “There are no foreign lands. It is the traveler who is foreign,” this year’s films allow us to discover what unites rather than what divides. The Festival also unites our community, bringing together culturally diverse audiences, a remarkable cross-section of cinematic voices, public and private funders of the arts, corporate sponsors and global film industry members. This fabulous ecology makes the event possible, and we wish our credits at the back of the program could better convey our deep appreci- ation of all who help make the Festival happen.

  • Textual Spectacle: the Transmedial Storyworld of Coldplay's Mylo Xyloto
The Concept Album as Visual-Sonic- Textual Spectacle: The Transmedial Storyworld of Coldplay’s Mylo Xyloto Lori Burns University of Ottawa [email protected] Abstract This paper studies the elaboration of the concept album by means of multimodal promotional strategies that include the concert tour, music videos, books, as well as other digital and print materials. Adopting the perspective that the meaning of a concept album emerges in and through a potentially complex network of materials, we can receive and understand concept album storytelling to operate according to multimedial, intermedial and transmedial contexts. This study examines the transmedial storyworld of Coldplay’s Mylo Xyloto concept spectacle as it is developed in and through the material content of the original album, the Coldplay: Live 2012 (Coldplay 2012c) concert film, as well as the paraphonographic materials that extend Mylo Xyloto into a variety of media. KEYWORDS: Concept album, spectacle, multimodality, intermediality, transmediality Introduction In the context of the new millennial industry of popular music, artists from a variety of genres rely heavily upon current technologies and social media platforms to develop elaborate promotional strategies, thus expanding the idea of the concept album to the concert tour, music videos, books, and a range of supplementary materials. With such an approach, the concept album can be seen to extend across multiple media formats in supplementary materials and live IASPM@Journal vol.6 no.2 (2016) Journal of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music ISSN 2079-3871 | DOI 10.5429/2079-3871(2016)v6i2.6en | www.iaspmjournal.net 92 Lori Burns performances.

ABOUT PAPUSZA Papusza is based on the true story of the Roma poet Papusza and the Polish poet Jerzy Ficowski, who discovered her great talent. Papusza was the first and only Roma woman who put her poems into writing and even published them. By doing so, she confronted the traditional female’s role in her community and as a result, she and her family were banished. It is a story of a gifted woman who wants to preserve her culture with words and has to pay a painful price for that decision. When a person is young, In heart and hope, The world opens easily With any kind of key. (Papusza) LOGLINE True story of Papusza - the first Roma woman who put her poems into writing and published them, and therefore confronted the traditional female image in the gypsy community. SYNOPSIS True story of Papusza - the first Roma woman who put her poems into writing and published them, and therefore confronted the traditional female image in the gypsy community. The film follows Papusza’s life from birth to old age: arranged marriage as a small girl, her life in a gypsy tabor before, during and after second world war, then forced settlement in communist Poland and urban life in poverty. Her meeting with the Polish poet Jerzy Ficowski, who discovered her great talent for poetry and published her works led to a tragic paradox: a famous poet was living in poverty, rejected by the Roma community, for betraying their secrets. PAPUSZA | Poland 2013 | Written & Directed Joanna Kos-Krauze & Krzysztof Krauze 2 WHAT MAKES PAPUSZA SPECIAL? ORIGINAL ROMA LANGUAGE The ensemble of actors includes mostly non-professionals from Roma families.

It argues that the biopic is a necessary category because producers, reviewers and cinemagoers have significant investments in biographical subjects, and because biopics construct a ‘public history’ for a broad audience.
