I am hopeful that you and association are managing through these difficult times, with all the disruptions to competition on all levels, finances, and health. We are hopeful that there is a return to “normal” at the national level in the second half of the year in many countries and we are still confident that we will be able to hold our full WFDF 2022 World Championship event calendar. Due to the difficulties of navigating across global time zones, we will have an abbreviated schedule for the meeting and try to wrap it up in the two hours allotted, per the attached agenda. Our Annual Congress is composed of several types of discussions. Given the limited time that we have for our meeting, given that we span time zones across the entire globe, our primary focus of the meeting will be the business matters of the federation requiring voting approval of the members: approval of the proposed budget, acceptance of the financial statements, approval of the auditor, the annual risk assessment, and approval of the revised Bylaws. -

Lignano - by hosting the European Masters Games - once again proved its ability to host great sport events. I would especially like to express my gratitude to all the volunteers who gave up their time to be part of the event, and without whom there would have been no Games. I also thank the hard work and dedication the Organizing committee put into the event. The European Masters Games 2011 have set a new benchmark for future host cities to meet. The standards have been raised in all aspects of the games and even surpassed the World Masters Games in terms of media awareness with an unprecedented web and TV coverage - It is an awa- reness the Masters movement needs and deserves. -

However, that was not to be, and 2020 was a year that brought many disappointments and uncertainties to our Members and athletes. The IWAS World Games 2020 due to be held in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand was set to be a tremendous success and the biggest IWAS Games ever! With thirteen sports on the programme, some of which making their debut at an IWAS Games, the excitement for the event was felt across the Membership. Unfortunately, this event was the first of many casualties of the disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. The disruption was also felt by the IWAS Sports. IWAS Wheelchair Fencing hosted the only competition of the year in Eger, Hungary in February 2020 while IWAS Powerchair Hockey also began 2020 with a success at the IPCH Euro Stars 2020 Tournament held in Lignano Sabbiadoro, Italy. -
Ideals and Significance of the Paralympics: Observations from Temporal and Spatial Dimensions
Ideals and Significance of the Paralympics: Observations from Temporal and Spatial Dimensions Ideals and Significance of the Paralympics: Observations from Temporal and Spatial Dimensions Kazuo OGOURA Introduction As the Paralympics becomes more widely recognized and the public’s knowledge and interest grows, Paralympic competitions are, in part, starting to be commercialized and made into a form of entertainment. The current situation calls for a re-evaluation of what has been considered as the essential significance and effect of the Paralympic Games and the Paralympic Movement on society. In other words, there is an increasing need to look back on the history of the Paralympics to examine its original significance and ideals and, at the same time, to re-evaluate or re-examine the significance and ideals of the Paralympics through comparisons with similar international games and movements. From this perspective, this article will attempt to revisit the original ideals of the Paralympics and to look back on the history of the Paralympics. It will also discuss the significance and ideals of the Paralympics from social and international perspectives, in particular through comparisons with other international disability sports competitions: the Deaflympics, Special Olympics, the VIRTUS(previously INAS) Global Games for persons with intellectual disability, and the Invictus Games. The observation and analysis will focus on Paralympic ideals through the following eight dimensions:(1) as symbolized by the Paralympic symbol;(2) the slogans of the Paralympic Games;(3) the words of Sir Ludwig Guttmann;(4) the speeches at the opening and closing ceremonies; (5) the stage performances at the opening and closing ceremonies, medals, and songs;(6) the achievements of the recipients of the Whang Youn Dai Achievement Award; (7) comparison with major international disability sports competitions; and(8) comparison with the ideals of Japan’s National Sports Festival for People with Disabilities. -
