The exceptional achievement of rida Osman (EGY) were the only women African Waddell and Schoenmaker swimmers to be on the podium in a world champi- onship (50m). Africa Aquatics All Africa Games, Casablanca, News August 21-24, 2019

A very insightful edition align four continental titles on 100m butterfly in 1995- 1999-2007and 2011. Loots also claimed three times the title on 200m butterfly (1999 -2007-2011) as did Kirsty Coventry (ZIM) on 100m back, 200m back and 200m IM (2007-2011-2015), Rania El Wany (EGY) on 50m FS (1991-1995-1999), Salim Iles (ALG) on 50m FS (1995- 2003-2007) and Cameron Van Der Burgh (RSA) on 50m and 100m breaststroke (2007-2011-2015). Since its comeback to continental swimming competi- tions in 1995, the South African relay teams have lost only six races (13%) out of the 46, thus totaling 40 victo- ries. Only the women team from Zimbabwe (4x100m FS) in 1999, the Egyptian men 4x200m FS (2019), 4x100m Medley (2003 and 2015), 4x100m medley mixed (2015) and finally the Algerian men team on the 4x100m FS in 2003 could snatch African titles

Farida Osman (EGY) , Erin Gallagher (RSA) and Amel 609 Entries Mlih (ALG) From the 42 events on the program, there was a total of 609 individual and relay entries (339 men, 249 women The 12th edition of the African games kept all its prom- and 21 mixed) but the record number of entries is still ises with a record participation of 184 swimmers from held by the 2007 edition of Algiers with a total of 618 37 countries of which only 11 were on the podium (29.7%) and 5 won titles (13.5%). As in 2015, 17 champi- onship records (9 men, 6 women and 2 mixed) were improved and a single continental record was broken by the South African mixed relay 4x100m freestyle in 3:31.24. It should be noted that three nations shared the 17 championship records: RSA (11), EGY (4) and ALG (2). On an individual level, Farida Osman (EGY, 50m and 100m butterfly), Erin Gallagher (RSA, 50 and 100m FS) and Martin Binedell (RSA, 200m backstroke) were the most prominent. Only four swimmers, 3 Egyptians: Fa- rida Osman (50m and 100m butterfly), Med Samy Hassan (50m back), Ahmed Akram Abbas (1500m NL) and the South African Martin Binedell (200m fly) successfully de- fended their 2015 titles in .

All participation records broken in this and a harvest of 81 medals: 46 gold, 22 silver and 13 edition bronze. The results remain impressive even if it is not as good as during the previous edition of Cairo 2017 with 109 medals: 52 gold, 34 silver and 23 After a very long absence in the organization of bronze. It must be said that Egypt was brilliant with 71 medals: 20 gold, 32 silver and 19 bronze, a result more balanced than that of 2017 where it won 65 medals: 14 gold, 29 silver and 22 bronze. If in 2017, South Africa largely dominated the two categories 13-14 years and 15-16 years, this was not the case in Tunis with the breakthrough of young Egyptian swimmers (13-14 years) who won the first place for both girls and boys with a record of 34 medals including 15 in gold against 25 medals for South Africa including 12 in gold. In the 15-16 age group, it was South Africa’s turn to finish on the top of the table with 56 medals, of which 34 were gold, more than 80% of the titles at stake (42) far ahead of Egypt with 35 medals, of Kirabo Namutebi (UGA) in center , Lilia Midouni which only 5 gold. Africa Aquatics Water Polo - 1st African Championship U16 News Cairo (EGY) 24-27 April 2019

Very tight victory for Egypt

In accordance to the recommendations of the world water polo conference organized by FINA from 26 to 28 April 2018 in Budapest (HUN) as part of the water polo development plan, the Egyp- tian federation, under the supervision of CANA, hosted the 1st African U16 Championships. The tournament kept all its promises and revealed fu- ture international stars. The EGY-RSA final was very balanced and tight. It ended with a close victory for the Egyptians 5/4 while Zimbabwe thwarted the Egypt vs South Africa in Final of Under16 Champion- forecasts by beating Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco. It ships should be noted that FINA was supposed to organ- ize the 1st world U16 championship from July 5 to 12, 2020 in Volos / Larissa (GRE) but the event was canceled due to the Covid-19.

Africa 30th Summer Universiade in Naples (ITA) Aquatics News July 5-10, 2019

South Africa in the limelight

A small delegation of 27 swimmers from four na- tions: RSA, UGA, EGY and KEN represented the continent in Naples at the 30th edition of the sum- mer Universiade which has always been considered as the world university championships. The results were remarkable for the South African team (7 swimmers) for finishing at 4th place in the final rank- ing table with 6 medals: 5 gold and 1 silver. Tatjana Schoenmaker (100m breaststroke in 1: 06.42 and 200m breaststroke in 2:22.92), Tayla Lovemore (50m butterfly in 26.25 and 100m butterfly in 58.74) and Zane Waddell (50m backstroke in 24.48) were superb winners while the 2018 youth Olympic champion Michael Hoolie was remarkable on 50m breaststroke (27.19). It should be noted that Schoenmaker broke the African 100m breaststroke Tatjana Schoenmaker and Penny Heyns record in 1: 06.32 in the semifinals while fellow compatriot Kaylene Corbett finished 4th, narrowly missing the 200m breaststroke podium.

In the absence of swimmers from South Africa, Egypt, Namibia and the Seychelles, it was the North African swimmers who won all the six medals. History will remember the first winners of the Games: the Algerian Sarra Moualfi and the Moroccan Mathew Ben Rahou ahead of the Tunisians Haythem Mebarek and Alya Gara.

Africa Aquatics Focus on Ali Gharbi News A Pillar of Tunisian Swimming

On 12th December, 2009, Ali Gharbi (54) passed away leaving behind a precious heritage to Tunisian and continental sport. He was the best African swimmer of the 70s but especially the first Arab and Tunisian swimmer to win the gold medal at the Algiers , on the 1st Septem- ber, 1975. For North African countries, the Medi- terranean Games are still considered as a major international event. Before the 1st September, 1975, only sports like and athletics had the privilege of bringing Mediterranean titles to Tunisia. Thanks to Ali Gharbi swimming has become the third national sport being able to win gold in a Mediterranean event that brings together the elite of nations like France, Italy, Spain, Greece and Turkey. The performance achieved by Ali Gharbi in Algiers has been enormous and constitutes the greatest achievement of his career. This pillar of national sport pionships in , the 1975 and 1979 Mediterra- will be remembered for long not only for his sport- nean games as well as the 1977 and 1978 African ing background but also for his human qualities and games and championships. His first and only partici- his generosity which allowed him to be one of our pation in the 1976 Montreal Olympics was reduced favorite sportsmen of the Tunisians. to the 200m FS event due to the boycott by a great number of African countries who were against the participation of New Zealand who chal- lenged the IOC by authorizing their rugby team to tour South Africa, a country which was at the time universally condemned and excluded from the Olympic Games because of its policy of racial seg- regation.

Ali Gharbi could not take part in his favorite event the 400m FS but he ranked 24th out of 55 partici- pants in 200m FS with a new African record of 1:55.82, this performance remained on the record table for 25 years until Oussama Mellouli broke it during the 2001 Mediterranean Games.
