On August 5, 1924, a new comic strip about an orphan girl debuted in The New York n

5 G Daily News. Little Orphan , created by , was a quick success, charming 6 Americans with its adventurous tales of a plucky 11-year-old girl. By 1937, it had become T the most popular comic strip in America, according to a Fortune magazine poll. Gray wrote h e d a n the strip for 44 years until his death in 1968, and continued under a T r65 u e r o long succession of authors until it was canceled on June 13, 2010. in - T h e -

The strip began with Annie in an orphanage overseen by an abusive matron. She was rescued by a mean-spirited Mrs. Warbucks, who took her home on a trial basis. The very wealthy and powerful Oliver Warbucks quickly fell for Annie’s charms and instructed her to call him “daddy.” Warbucks adopted Annie, and Mrs. Warbucks mysteriously disappeared from the strip.

Sandy entered the strip in early 1925 as a small puppy that Annie rescued from a group of abusive boys, completing the trio of main characters that would sustain the comic strip for 86 years. Sandy was allowed to grow into a big dog, but Annie remained forever 11 years old.

Gray never revealed the true origins of Annie. One widely accepted story is that the name was based on a poem by James Whitcomb Riley titled “Little Orphan Annie.” Another story holds that he based the character on a bright street urchin he met in . According to yet another version, Gray showed sample strips featuring Little Orphan Otto to an editor who thought the boy looked too girlish and dubbed the character Annie instead of Otto.

From the beginning, Little Orphan Annie consisted of stories that played out over long periods of time. Typically, Warbucks would go away on business, and Gray would contrive to have Annie leave the safety of the mansion and wander the countryside, becoming involved in dangerous adventures. Warbucks, with the aid of the eight-foot-tall Punjab and the mysterious Asp, would step in at just the right moment to rescue Annie from the clutches of the villain.

Gray’s strips dealt with serious issues: political corruption, criminal gangs, war, corrupt institutions. He held very conservative political beliefs, and those were often reflected in his strips. Warbucks represented Gray’s vision of capitalism at its best -- the self- made, exceedingly rich industrialist turning the United States into the world’s economic powerhouse and creating jobs for working Americans. Gray disliked labor unions and Democrats and despised President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and his New Deal programs.

Gray’s strip about his spunky orphan spawned an entertainment powerhouse that included a radio show, movies, and the musical currently playing on Broadway. Movies titled Little Orphan Annie were filmed in 1932 by RKO Pictures and in 1938 by Paramount Pictures. The musical version opened on Broadway April 21, 1977, and later that year NBC broadcast “The Annie Christmas Show.” The movie version of the musical premiered on May 21, 1982. Annie the musical has been produced around the world and is in continuous production in the U.S. by regional theaters, high schools, community theaters and children’s theaters. At 35 years of age, it shows no signs of slowing down. Americans still love the warm, optimistic story of the orphan, the billionaire and the dog.
