Making her cabaret debut, Malone will salute 14 of her favorite Broadway actresses who have been an influence on her during her musical theatre career. The audience will hear selections made famous by Fanny Brice, Carol Burnett, Betty Buckley, Carol Channing, Judy Holliday, Angela Lansbury, Patti LuPone, Mary Martin, Ethel Merman, Liza Minnelli, Bernadette Peters, Barbra Streisand, Elaine Stritch, and Nancy Walker. On making her cabaret debut: “The idea of putting together an original cabaret act where you’re standing on stage for ninety minutes straight has always sounded daunting to me,” Malone said. “I’ve had the idea for this particular cabaret format for a few years. I felt the time was right to challenge myself, and I couldn’t be more proud to debut this cabaret on the very stage that offered me my first musical theatre experience as a nine-year-old in the Moonlight’s very first musical Oliver! directed by Kathy Brombacher.” Malone can relate to the fact that the leading ladies she has chosen to celebrate are all attached to iconic comedic roles. “I learned at a very young age that getting laughs is golden,” she said. -

Miss Paige starred in the original Broadway production of Mame, taking over the title role from its originator, Angela Lansbury. With an all-encompassing talent that embraces the worlds of stage, movies and television, Miss Paige is equally at home in dramatic, comic and musical roles. Prior to her stage career, she enjoyed wide acclaim Book by for her starring roles in motion pictures, Jerome Lawrence beginning with Hollywood Canteen and and continuing through a four-year tenure as a Robert E. Lee Warner Brothers star. Her introduction to Broadway came purely by accident, when producer Leland Hayward, desperately searching through some 200 applicants for Music and Lyrics by the role of Judy Revere in the Howard Lindsay-Russell Crouse comedy Remains To Jerry Herman Be Seen, was introduced to Miss Paige at the rehearsal hall and within the space of fifteen minutes she came away with the part. So what exactly makes a cabaret song a cabaret song? This document will explore the topic first by tracing historical antecedents to and the evolution of artistic cabaret from its inception in Paris at the end of the 19th century, subsequent flourish throughout Europe, and progression into the United States. This document then aims to provide a stylistic analysis to the first volume of the cabaret songs of American composer Richard Pearson Thomas. ii Dedication This document is dedicated to the person who has been most greatly impacted by its writing, however unknowingly—my son Jack. The Cabaret Girl
THE CABARET GIRL A musical comedy in 3 acts by George Grossmith and P. G. Wodehouse. Music by Jerome Kern. Winter Garden Theatre, London : Opened 19th September, 1922; closed 11th August, 1923 (361 performances) SYNOPSIS Marilynn Morgan is a chorus girl who tries to get a job in the glamorous troupe of the All Night Follies at the same time, pursuing her love affair with the aristocratic hero, Jim Paradine. Involved in their affairs are the producers of the cabaret, Messrs Gravvins and Gripps. They drss up a lot of peasants as aristocrats with the aim of impressing Marilynn's young man's parents into consenting to a wedding. It all backfires and Marilynn flees back to London, and showbusiness, where she gets her cabaret job and her young man comes to claim her, family, or inheritance or no. STORY The hero, James (“Jim”) Paradene is the nephew of the Marchioness of Harrogate. He has been left a small fortune by his father, on condition that he must marry a lady who meets with the approval of the Marchioness and her son, the Marquis of Harrogate. Unfortunately, Jim wishes to marry Marilynn Morgan, but his trustees disapprove of her because she is a chorus girl. Act 1: The Showroom of Messrs Gripps & Gravvins, Music Publishers, Bond Street Jim comes to the offices of Gripps and Gravins looking for a song to sing at his local village concert. When Marilynn also arrives, to audition for a cabaret that Gripps and Gravvins are producing, Jim tries to persuade her to give up her career and settle with him in the country, but she refuses and suggests that they should part. -

Since its founding in 1952, MTI has been responsible for supplying scripts and musical materials to theatres worldwide and for protecting the rights and legacy of the authors whom it represents. It has been a driving force in cultivating new work and in extending the production life of some of the classics: Guys and Dolls, West Side Story, Fiddler On The Roof, Les Misérables, Annie, Of Thee I Sing, Ain’t Misbehavin’, Damn Yankees, The Music Man, Evita, and the complete musical theatre works of composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim, among others. Apart from the major Broadway and Off- Broadway shows, MTI is proud to represent youth shows, revues and musicals which began life in regional theatres and have since become worthy additions to the musical theatre canon. MTI shows have been performed by 30,000 amateur and professional theatrical organizations throughout the U.S. and Canada, and in over 60 countries around the world.
