A VISIT WITH In the history of the American , few "leading ladies" bring to mind as many different images as Auntie Mame - wild, exploratory, non-conforming, loving, caring - all of the ingredients in tonight's presentation of MAME. First the subject of a novel, then a play, a movie based on the play, then a musical, and yet another movie based on the musical, Auntie Mame has been winning the hearts of theatre-goers for over a generation. As the playwrights have said, "some of the spirit of Mame bubbles in each human being who really believes life is a banquet! There's surely a Mame in every community, often in every family". To get to know this intoxicating woman is to be entranced. Tonight, relax and become friends with MAME!

KATIE HASSETT (Mame) A well-known Bay Area Director and performer, Katie makes her third appearance in awvlo production. Her fine acting ability and versatility have been evident in her roles of Agnes in "I Do! I Do!" and Elsa in Sound of Music" for WVLO and as Lilli in "Kiss Me Kate", Nellie in "Carousel", Madame Thiang in "King & I" and many others for SDG. She also has directorial credits which include 19 musicals and plays from Foothill Collige ("Sly Fox") to Santa Cruz with several productions right here on this stage for SDG and Community Players. She just completed "Cole" in September. G&S Society has also been a recipient of Katie's directorial talents. Katie played Vera for SDG's "Mame" sometime ago, so is very happy to finally be playing the title role. She's waited a long time. Besides theater, her hobbies are travel, bridge and her husband, Fred (not necessarily in that order! i). BEN VARKENTINE (Young Patrick) At the young age of 12, Ben makes his debut with WVLO, but as you can see by his stage presence, he is already a very experienced young man in theater. He has performed in "Hansel & Gretel", "Oliver", " Get Your Gun", "Music Man", and "Midsummer Nights Dream". A 7th grader at Wilbur Middle School in Palo Alto, he has studied drama with Jodi Corwin Babbington and with Andrew Forrest at Peninsula School in Menlo Park. His ambitions are to appear in "Barnum" someday, win a Tony award, and to direct plays in addition to his performing. He collects comic books and theater autographs. Watch Ben's future; we predict he's going far!

MARGE HAND (Vera) After a two-year absence from our stage, Marge is back to make her eighteenth appearance and her second in the role of Vera. A long-standing and gOOd-natured rivalry with Katie (Mame) adds a great deal of meaning to their portrayals on stage and especially in the number, "Bosom Buddies." Her most memorable roles include Golde in "Fiddler", Agnes in "I Do! I Do!", Elizabeth Barrett Browning in "Robert & Elizabeth", Nellie Cohan in "Good News" both which earned her ERMA awards as Best Supporting Actress. Marge's most recent role was that of Dolly Levi in "Hello, Dolly" for SCP and in July, she and partner, Ray Toney, completed a successful production of their original musical, "Delta Centauri", in Cupertino for CAST. She hopes this endeavor will someday add "Noted Lyricist" to her credits. ~,ood luck, we hope you make it so we can say, "We knew them when ...

GAIL HAMILTON (Agnes Gooch) Gail made her dancing debut here in the Bay Area in WVLO's production of "Oklahoma" and then went on to perform in SJCLO's "Brigadoon", Theater West's "Dracula", "Room Service", & "Ladies at the Alamo" and in "Philadelphia Story" for SJ Rep. Her many hobbies include movies, music, dancing, exercise, travel, cooking, and eating what she cooks. She must only cook with slim foods!!! Gail says she is living for the day when Hal Prince calls her to inform her he simply can't do his next musical without her! Keep cooking, Gail, wilder dreams have come true!

CHARLIE ROBERT (Dwight Babcock) A recent newcomer to our Valley from Connecticut, Charlie makes his first appearance on this stage; but not his first performance in this area. He just completed the role of Joseph Gribble in Theater West's production of "Room Service". Majoring in drama at the University of Connecticut, Charlie performed in "Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum", and "Emperor Jones", among others. He says theater is his hobby and having wife, Jennifer, in the show helps keep a happy home. Don't we know it!!! BYRON WESTLUND, Jr. (Older Patrick) Byron is a newcomer to WVLO, but has been taking courses in Acting, Make-Up and Stage Lighting at DeAnza as well as an Acting course at Cal Poly. He made several appearances in productions at these colleges and at the Fort Ord Playhouse in Monterey and finally "arrived" at the Gaslighter Theater in Campbell. His credits include Vincentio in "Taming of the Shrew", Lamar in "Godspell", Renfield in "Dracula" and many more. He lists cooking and gardening among his hobbies and is currently working on a portfolio for commercials and modeling. He sure throws himself into those love scenes with 'Gloria Upson'. Wonder why!!!

ROY SHIMADA (Ito) Regular theater goers will remember Roy's portayal of Sammy Fong in last season's "Flower Drum Song" for which he was nominated Best Actor. He also repeats his role of Ito, having performed it first in CP's production of "Mame" several years ago. This marks Roy's fourth production for WVLO and his talents and enthusiasm are always welcome. He also appeared with SDG in "Damn Yankees". A registered phsical therapist, Roy's ambition is to improve his acting and so he lists his hobbies as doing and going to the theater.

HAROLD N. CROPP (C. Lindsay Woolsey) We are delighted to welcome Hal back after a 4-year absence. His WVLO credits include directing "Sound of Music", "Camelot" and "Good News" as well as his memorable acting in "Very Good Eddie", "My Fair Lady", "South Pacific" and others. SDG, SJCLO and TheaterWest have all enjoyed Hal's talents in productions of "Where's Charley?", "Sly Fox", "Room Service", "Golden Gates" and numerous others. He states he wants to be a "professional", but he didn't say at what!

RICK FRANK (Beauregard J.P. Burnside) Rick is not a stranger to any stage in this Valley. A veteran performer of more than 40 shows, he directed "Brigadoon" and "Wonderful Town" for WVLO and has appeared in 6 other productions. His acting credits also include dramatic and musical roles for Montalvo, Gaslighter, TheaterWest and Community Players. He directed "Inherit The Wind" for CP last season. Rick says he's one of few performers who has played Dracula, Alfie Doolittle and Emile Debeck. That's what we call VERSA-TILE!!!

'------~ DENNIS ROSSOW (Director) We are very proud to welcome Dennis to his first directorial task for WVLO; but certainly not his first production with us for he gave memorable performances in the roles of Ali Hakim and Tom Marlowe in "Oklahoma" and "Good News", respectively. Dennis was initiated into theater at Indiana University where he received his B. A. Degree. His growing list of directorial credits include "A Doll's House", "The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds" and most recently, "Bleacher Bums" for TheaterWest. He has also proven his versatility in performing with diversified roles in productions of "Charley's 'aunt", "The Real Inspector Hound", "Travesties", "The Hostage" and "The Philadelphia Story", among others. We'look forward to having Dennis give us an encore, whether it be on stage or on our staff.

JOHN DOSCHER (Music Director) A regular member of our WVLO orchestra, John made his directing debut with "The Pajama Game" for WVLO and last fall conducted "Hello, Dolly" for SCPo This talented musician plays trombone for a variety of local community theater groups - G&S, SDG and CSAT. His background in big band jazz has been an advantage in this production which has its setting in that particular era. John's daughter, Kelly is usually involved in these theatrical endeavors; but this assignment is her noisiest yet! (Check the orchestra listl)

GARY DEMATTI (Coreographer) We feel very fortunate to have Gary back and on our staff. The last time he worked with WVLO was in "Good News". He has most recently directed and choreographed "Fiddler on the Roof" for Los Gatos High School and "Babes In Arms" for SJ Children's Theater. Locally, he has performed with SCP, TheaterWest, SDG (his role in "Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" earned him Best Actor Award and the Group's Newcomer Award) and SJCLO for which he has won several Ginny awards while working with such stars as Ken Berry, Van Johnson and JoAnn Worley, when she played "Marne". Gary appeared off-Broadway in "The Fantasticks" and in LA in "Play It Again, Sam". He says theater is his life and his aspiration is to play on Broadway someday. We believe he's just talented enough to make it!!

VIVIAN CLARE (Choral Director) A lovely and talented actress / singer, Vivian was Choral Director for WVLO's "The Pajama Game" and played Laurie in "Oklahoma". She has had leading roles in local productions for G&S, SCP, CAST, Manhattan Playhouse and is currently cast as Casilda in The Lamplighters production of "The Gondoliers". An aspiring opera singer, she is a professional voice teacher, who lOVeSperforming and teaching others how to achieve better vocal quality. As to hobbies, she says she really has no time for any. Guess this is it, Viv! DID YOU KNOW???

... that "MAME" opened on Broadway in 1966? ... that it played 1,508 performances before going on tour? ... that starred in the original Broadway production? ... that this musical comedy won the Grammy Award in 1966 for the best score from an original cast show album? ... that Jerry Herman, who wrote both music and lyrics for "MAME", was named Best Lyricist by the New York Drama Critics during the show's opening in 1966? ... that Beatrice Arthur (Maude) played Vera Charles in the original Broadway production?
