Lewis Spence) I pen these words barely a week after Hurricane Katrina slammed into the Gulf Coast, uprooting over a million people, leaving hundreds of thousands homeless, tens of thousands stranded, and unknown hundreds dead. Most Americans, cast involuntarily in the role of passive participants, watched this tragedy unfold with the same sense of slow- mo horror, helplessness, and fatalistic fascination we experience in that instant before cars collide, transfixed by the seemingly endless stream of devastation, suffering, and death broadcast twenty-four hours a day. For those of us outside the affected area, the images of anguish, grief, and loss are surreal and almost unfathomable in their magnitude, evoking empathy, compassion, and grief of our own. But for those in Katrina’s path, particularly residents of New Orleans and the Mississippi delta, those who have lost family, friends, homes, and livelihood, it’s the apocalypse. -

van Binsbergen, Wim M.J., 2020, The leg child in global cultural history: A distributional exercise in comparative mythology, at: http://www.quest- journal.net/shikanda/topicalities/leg_child,pdf In this paper we shall address an interessting and wide-spread mytheme that nonetheless is little known outside the circle of comparative mythologists: the leg child. In comparative mythology, the leg child is a mythical anthropomorphic figure born from a human body otherwise than via the normal birth channel; cf . van Binsbergen 2018: 417, where I wrote approximately (text considerably adapted): .... the mytheme of the leg child (NarCom 12b). This is a common motif, indicating a mythical figure who was born, not by passing through the normal birth channel, but through a thigh, armpit, waist, occiput or any other part of the human body except the birth channel. The type case is from Ancient Greek mythology, where Dionysus was sewn into his father Zeus's thigh, and born from there, after his mother Semele had been burned to death under the hot splendour of Zeus' lightning.(...) Quite a few mythical protagonists worldwide appear as leg children, including Ancient Egyptian Seth born from his mother's side, Thoth from his father's skull (Bonnet 1952: 702 f.), cf. Greek Athena from her father's skull (and when Hephaestus – who incidentally, as a smith was the very one to split Zeus’s skull on that occasion – in sexual arousal ejaculated against Athena's thigh who in disgust wiped off the sperm with a handful of wool and cast it to the Earth, who immediately responded by producing Erichthonius [ – by an ancient popular etymology, ‘Wool-Earthy’ – , ] this makes the latter also a leg child although he was reputedly borne by Gaia / Earth). -

Without preparation, we may arrive at Christmas morning without first quietly considering and preparing for the gift of the Nativity. Advent is a season of quiet preparation in the home and the heart, and this atmosphere is cultivated carefully in our plans and activities. Consider first. As you consider the pages and ideas here (some are my own, most are compiled and gathered from other resources listed at the end of the book), and plan what you will bring into your own home as you set the atmosphere of preparation during Advent, please consider your family and your own time availability. One does not have to check off everything listed here to enjoy a beautiful and rich Advent! When we began celebrating the liturgical year as a family, I had a handful of holy cards, a liturgical year calendar, and a great desire to tap into the richness the Church offered through the rhythm of Her year. -

Abstract In 1953 Aarne Koskinen’s book, The Missionary Influence as a Political Factor in the Pacific Islands, appeared on the shelves of the academic world, adding further fuel to the longstanding debate in anthropological and historical studies regarding the role and effects of missionary activity in colonial settings. Koskinen’s finding supported the general view amongst anthropologists and historians that missionary activity had a negative impact on non-Western populations, wiping away their cultural templates and disrupting their socio-economic and political systems. This attitude towards mission activity assumes that the contemporary non-Western world is the product of the ‘West’, and that what the ‘Rest’ believes and how it lives, its social, economic and political systems, as well as its values and beliefs, have derived from or have been implanted by the ‘West’. This postulate has led to the denial of the agency of non-Western or colonial people, deeming them as ‘history-less’ and ‘nation-less’: as an entity devoid of identity. But is this postulate true? Have the non-Western populations really been passive recipients of Western commodities, ideas and values? This dissertation examines the role that Christianity, the ideology of the West, the religion whose values underlies the semantics and structures of modernisation, has played in the genesis and rise of West Papuan nationalism. -

This article examined the biblical allusions found in two Papuan myths and discussed their impacts as seen in the material culture. The books in the Bible that the myths allude to are the Old Testament: Isaiah, Exodus, Genesis, and Deuteronomy and the New Testaments: Luke, John, Mark, and Revelations. The sources suggested that the biblical information might have been heard sporadically by the Sawi/Auyu and the Tabi from Corresponding Author: earlier Europeans. Community and Schism among the Old Colony Mennonites of Belize: A Case Study Tanja Plasil, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Trondheim, Norway Introduction In northern Belize, formerly British Honduras, lies the Altkolonier (Old Colony) Mennonite colony of Shipyard.1 Here the Mennonites form a distinct group within the wider Belizean society because of their appearance, language, religion, and lifestyle. At first glimpse Shipyard may seem like a coherent community, frozen in time, but a closer look reveals that things are quite different from what they appear. The formerly uniform community is showing cracks. A group of people have started to meet to study the Bible, and have begun doubting the old system within which they were living. The old ways do not seem plausible anymore. In order to contain the damage and to keep the rest of the community in line, the preachers have excommunicated members of the Bible Study group, banning them from being a part of community life.2 This 252 Journal of Mennonite Studies means that they, the “outcasts,” face a life of hardship, as they are shunned by even close family members, and do not receive any assistance from former friends or neighbours. To cope with this situation, they have formed a new group within the colony, one that provides mutual support and gives new meaning to their lives. This has worked quite well for some time, but before too long this new group also began splitting into different sub-groups. In this article,3 I focus on the circumstances and social tools that have kept the Altkolonier colony in Belize from becoming part of the wider society for such a long time, and, indeed, how members have kept the community intact. -

Marrying the Brother’s Wife’s Sister: Marriage Patterns among Old Colony Mennonites in Argentina Lorenzo Cañás Bottos, Norwegian University of Science and Technology Introduction The objective of this article is to assess the existence and analyse the consequences of a particular type of marriage pattern in a Men- nonite colony. For this, I apply an approach to the study of a complex kinship system that stems from studies of elementary kinship systems. That is, considering the kinship network of a whole population as the unit of study instead of concentrating on households or individual genealogies. I demonstrate the widespread existence of a marriage pattern characterised by two siblings marrying with two siblings (sibling or sister exchange within anthropological parlance), or in other words, marrying one’s sibling’s spouse’s sibling. I would like to clarify from the start that this article does not concern itself with the causes of this pattern, but with its consequences (particularly on effects on land redistribution and the marriage possibilities of the following gen- 76 Journal of Mennonite Studies eration). The main argument is that the marriage pattern in question does not lead toward the consolidation of land, but tends to equalise the distribution of wealth. Furthermore, when taking into account unwritten rules on marriage within the colony, this pattern produces the unintended consequence of opening up marriage opportunities to the following generation. This article is based on fieldwork in La Nueva Esperanza, an Old Colony Mennonite settlement in Argentina (for further details on this colony see Cañás Bottos, 2005, 2008a). The main economic activities in the colony are agriculture and dairy cattle breeding. -

I am resigned that we will not recover the Codex in time to save my wife and me. I have perhaps a week, certainly no more than two, left before old age claims me; Perenelle will have a few days more. And now that death is almost upon me, I have discovered that I do not want to die. I have lived upon this earth for six hundred and seventy-six years and there is still so much that I have not seen, so much that I wish I still had time to do. I am grateful, though, that I have lived long enough to discover the twins of legend, and proud that I began their training in the Elemental Magics. Sophie has mastered three, Josh just the one, but he has demonstrated other skills and his courage is extraordinary. We have returned to San Francisco, having left Dee for dead in England. I am hoping we have seen the last of him, and even if his encounter with the Archon did not destroy him, I know that his masters will not tolerate failure on this scale. I am disturbed, however, to learn that Machiavelli is here in this city. Perenelle trapped him and his companion on Alcatraz along with the other monsters, but I am not sure how long the Rock can hold someone like the Italian immortal. -

From Abbey to Xanten A Glossary of Catholic and Norbertine Terms From Abbey to Xanten A Glossary of Catholic and Norbertine Terms As part of our mission at St. Norbert College, we value the importance of communio, a centuries-old charism of the Order of Premonstratensians (more commonly known as the Norbertines). Communio is characterized by mutual esteem, trust, sincerity, faith and responsibility, and is lived through open dialogue, communication, consultation and collaboration. In order for everyone to effectively engage in this ongoing dialogue, it is important that we share some of the same vocabulary and understand the concepts that shape our values as an institution. Because the college community is composed of people from diverse faith traditions and spiritual perspectives, this glossary explains a number of terms and concepts from the Catholic and Norbertine traditions with which some may not be familiar. We offer it as a guide to help people avoid those awkward moments one can experience when entering a new community – a place where people can sometimes appear to be speaking in code. While the terms in this modest pamphlet are important, the definitions are limited and are best considered general indications of the meaning of the terms rather than a complete scholarly treatment. We hope you find this useful.
