Considering his identity as Sorcerer Supreme, there is a crucial connection between the Orient and his magic. The paper will discuss the detailed symbols of Orientalism in the process of creation and presentation of Doctor Strange respectively to figure out the change of Orientalism with the times within the texts of Doctor Strange and its existence today. Keywords: Orientalism, Doctor Strange, magic in the world of Marvel Introduction Ever since his debut in 1963, Doctor Strange has become a representation of superheroes with magic in the world of Marvel. Noticeably, a number of eastern elements have never ceased to appear in the Doctor Strange series throughout the times. Several characters are from the east, and the mysterious Asian land is also the birthplace of Doctor Strange’s magic power. Considering his identity as Sorcerer Supreme, the first and strongest sorcerer in Marvel, there must be a crucial connection between the Orient and his magic, both in the entire Marvel world, and in traditional western culture. Eastern elements under the account of westerners can be well interpreted with reference to the general concept of Orientalism. Thus, this paper aims to discuss the way the idea of Orientalism evolves with the times that is showcased within the texts of Doctor Strange.

  • Doctor Strange Comics As Post-Fantasy
Evolving a Genre: Doctor Strange Comics as Post-Fantasy Jessie L. Rogers Thesis submitted to the faculty of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in English Karen Swenson, Chair Nancy A. Metz Katrina M. Powell April 15, 2019 Blacksburg, Virginia Keywords: Fantasy, Comics Studies, Postmodernism, Post-Fantasy Copyright 2019, Jessie L. Rogers Evolving a Genre: Doctor Strange Comics as Post-Fantasy Jessie L. Rogers (ABSTRACT) This thesis demonstrates that Doctor Strange comics incorporate established tropes of the fantastic canon while also incorporating postmodern techniques that modernize the genre. Strange’s debut series, Strange Tales, begins this development of stylistic changes, but it still relies heavily on standard uses of the fantastic. The 2015 series, Doctor Strange, builds on the evolution of the fantastic apparent in its predecessor while evidencing an even stronger presence of the postmodern. Such use of postmodern strategies disrupts the suspension of disbelief on which popular fantasy often relies. To show this disruption and its effects, this thesis examines Strange Tales and Doctor Strange (2015) as they relate to the fantastic cornerstones of Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings and Rowling’s Harry Potter series. It begins by defining the genre of fantasy and the tenets of postmodernism, then it combines these definitions to explain the new genre of postmodern fantasy, or post-fantasy, which Doctor Strange comics develop. To show how these comics evolve the fantasy genre through applications of postmodernism, this thesis examines their use of otherworldliness and supernaturalism, as well as their characterization and narrative strategies, examining how these facets subvert our expectations of fantasy texts.

  • An Analysis of Ms. Marvel's Kamala Khan
The “Worlding” of the Muslim Superheroine: An Analysis of Ms. Marvel’s Kamala Khan SAFIYYA HOSEIN Muslim women have been a source of speculation for Western audiences from time immemorial. At first eroticized in harem paintings, they later became the quintessential image of subservience: a weakling to be pitied and rescued from savage Brown men. Current depictions of Muslim women have ranged from the oppressed archetype in mainstream media with films such as The Stoning of Soraya M (2008) to comedic veiled characters in shows like Little Mosque on the Prairie (2012). One segment of media that has recently offered promising attempts for destabilizing their image has been comics and graphic novels which have published graphic memoirs that speak to the complexity of Muslim identity as well as superhero comics that offer a range of Muslim characters from a variety of cultures with different levels of religiosity. This paper explores the emergence of the Muslim superheroine in comic books by analyzing the most developed Muslimah (Muslim female) superhero: the rebooted Ms. Marvel superhero, Kamala Khan, from the Marvel Comics Ms. Marvel series. The analysis illustrates how the reconfiguration of the Muslim female archetype through the “worlding” of the Muslim superhero continues to perpetuate an imperialist agenda for the Third World. This paper uses Gayatri Spivak’s “worlding” which examines the “othered” natives and the global South as defined through Eurocentric terms by imperialists and colonizers. By interrogating Kamala’s representation, I argue that her portrayal as a “moderate” Muslim superheroine with Western progressive values can have the effect of reinforcing Safiyya Hosein is a Ph.D.

  • Her Own Heroine: Feminism and Diversity in the Comic Book Industry
Panel Title: Her Own Heroine: Feminism and Diversity in the Comic Book Industry Moderator: Patricia B. Worrall, Ph.D. English Department University of North Georgia [email protected] First Speaker: Veronica Harris English Department University of North Georgia [email protected] Title: “Breaking the Mold: Ororo Munroe and the Entertainment Industry” Proposal: Throughout the history and development of comic books, there has been adaptations of the characters to different media venues. Storm, or Ororo Munroe, is no exception. She comes from the African country of Kenya born to a native woman and American man. Her mother comes from a line of priestesses said to hold mystical powers to protect their tribes. At a young age, she experiences a tragic plane crashing into her home, which traps her under her mother’s body and rubble. She develops claustrophobic tendencies, which awaken her powers. Later in life, she comes to teach at the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters, i.e. mutants, and becomes one of the most powerful X-Men. Representations of Storm occur in many different forms of visual media, such as movies and comics. However, the medium of film limits the development of her backstory and heritage because of the film industry’s shift to an emphasis and focus on white males taken from comics. This shift has resulted in restricting and restraining women of color. On the other hand, cartoons, such as Wolverine and the X-Men and X-Men Evolution , do provide some space for her. Although even in comic space restricts and restrains women of color and becomes analogous to Storm’s claustrophobia.

  • "Captain America Must Die": How a Super Soldier Became a Patriot
Author Biography Mackenna is a fourth-year history major, with minors in German and Asian studies. Her research interests include the history of popular culture and the Cold War. In her free time, she enjoys reading comic books and binge-watch- ing Survivor and The Amazing Race. After graduation, she hopes to work as an editor in the comic book industry. Johnson “Captain America Must Die”: How a Super Soldier Became a Patriot by Mackenna Johnson Abstract This paper analyzes the character of Captain America in the midst of the Cold War, and particularly asks how and to what extent the character reflects his con- temporary sociopolitical atmosphere. To achieve this end, I first establish the vital role of popular culture, especially comic books, in modern historical research. I then discuss the history of Captain America, the sociopolitical situation of the 1970s, and, finally, introduce the Secret Empire and Nomad storylines of the 1970s, which form the basis of my argument. The most valuable primary source in this paper is not the comic books themselves, but an interview that I recently conducted with the former author of Captain America, Steve Englehart. Ulti- mately, I argue that Englehart redefined Captain America’s version of patriotism and created a character that was more effectively able to reflect on and respond to social and political events. In bold letters: “The Death of a Hero,” next to the lifeless figure of Cap- tain America tied to a chimney, slumped and bleeding. Two figures stood behind the slain man with bowed heads, one African American with high- tech wings strapped to his back, the other blonde-haired and clad mostly in black.
