“Hey, Carol, you coming to practice after school?” Carol Danvers, AKA Captain Marvel, looked up from opening her locker to find none other than her best friend, Val, looking back at her.

“Val, uh . . .” How was she going to get out of this? She had secret fight training at S.H.I.E.L.D. after school, but Director Fury had told her no one was allowed to know. “I . . . uh.”

Her friend kept looking up at her expectantly.

“What, do you have a HOT DATE or something?” Val waggled her eyebrows, and Carol bit back a laugh.

“Yes! I have a HOT DATE, yep. That’s what it is. A hot date. For sure.”

She didn’t like lying to Val, but Director Fury had said that tonight Carol was going to train with someone really special.

“Well, practice is early because I got places to be, too. So as long as your date’s not till later?”

“Ah, right after school, Val. Sorry!” Carol really needed to come up with a reason to quit the basketball team. She couldn’t do both! Even if it meant giving up her All-American title; she had another title that meant more.

Finally, back into the safety of the best place in the world: my bed.

I can’t believe that Bruno thinks I can’t be a good super hero on my own. How dare he. It’s not like you see Spider-Man trading shifts with someone else! It’s so rude. Ugh. UGH.

I’ve totes got this. I took down two bad guys today all on my own and only broke, like, one part of one building. It’s not like anyone got hurt!

That feels like a big win!

I know I can do it. And I know that Bruno’s just looking out for me, but it feels pretty blergh that my best friend thinks I’m not good enough to do this stuff on my own. SIGH.

I just have to remember how Captain Marvel does it!
