Introduction 5 OUTSTANDING FORMER STUDENT: 2006-2007 WARD ALLEN WHITE III Ward Allen White III was the first full-time African-American student to attend San Antonio College. He is an Assistant District Attorney, Civil Division, in the Office of the Tarrant County Criminal District Attorney in Ft. Worth, Texas. After graduating from Phillis Wheatley High School, only one year after the Brown v Board of Education Supreme Court decision that integrated American Schools, White registered at San Antonio College in September 1955, with the assistance of then registrar Dr. Jerome Weynand. White explained that he could have gone elsewhere, but he preferred to go to San Antonio College: “I had passed by the campus many times and found it attractive and inviting,” and the presence of so many Hispanic students was encouraging, suggesting that “segregation ends after high school.” In addition to Dr. Weynand, the people who had the largest impact on White at the college were Drama Professor Carl Atkins and English Professor Edith Ward Allen White III Wilson. “San Antonio College gave me the right ‘lift’, Assistant District Attorney
