Zeigler, Ph.D. President OUR HISTORY San Antonio College was established as University Junior College in September 1925, under the auspices of the University of Texas. The following year control of the College was transferred to the San Antonio Independent School District and the name was changed to San Antonio Junior College. Following passage of state legislation authorizing junior college districts, the San Antonio Union Junior College District was formed in 1945 and in 1946 assumed control of San Antonio College and its sister college, St. Philip’s Junior College. In 1948, San Antonio Junior College’s name was changed to San Antonio College, and in 1951, the College was moved to its present location on San Pedro Avenue. Five hundred students were enrolled at that time. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools granted accreditation to the college in 1955. SAN ANTONIO COLLEGE BULLETIN 3 In the late 1960s San Antonio College became a comprehensive community college by expanding offerings in occupational and technical courses and by assuming the San Antonio Independent School District’s Continuing Education Program. The name of the College District was changed to San Antonio Community College District in 1978 and in 1982 the District was renamed the Alamo Community College District. In support of the mission of the Alamo Community College District, San Antonio College responds to Bexar County’s diverse community by providing high quality general education, liberal arts and sciences, career education, continuing education, and developmental education. The college has an average semester enrollment of 22,000 credit students and an average annual enrollment of 16,000 other-than-credit students. San Antonio College is the largest single-campus community college in Texas and one of the largest in the United States. OUR MISSION San Antonio College will provide responsive education through excellence, accessibility, and diversity. San Antonio College is a public community college that provides and supports the educational and lifelong learning needs of a multicultural community. This new series of sculptures incorporates his use of material, technique and personalized visual language that he has developed and refined over the past 30 years as an artist. This new series of totem sculptures, assembled and created of ceramic, concrete and stone, reflect the result of the artist’s journey that demonstrates a new high level of resolve and refinement. Their craftsmanship, mastered technique and process employ his career experience and knowledge of his chosen medium. These contemporary totems serve as a culmination of the artist’s aesthetic issues, ideas and artistic development. Chadbourne’s oeuvre has always been imbued with contradictions and a contrasting duality – man-made geometric shapes against natural organic forms. Utilizing elemental shapes, symbols and abstract patterns and motifs, these sculptures combine historical and current aesthetic issues with the artist’s strong interest in and the influence of folk and tribal art. These ritualistic totems are assembled of color-stacked segments, geometric elements of cylinders, rectangles and rings, and are topped with enigmatic shaped forms suggesting metamorphous growth and change.

This was a big undertaking because to say that Danville is a prolific artist is an understatement. His studio, formerly a neighborhood grocery store, and adjacent 1920’s era house, are literally filled floor to ceiling with work, which has spilled out to the backyard making a Zen like sculpture garden. Even though this exhibition occupies the largest gallery in Blue Star, we wanted to be careful to guard against the temptation of exhibiting too many pieces. Much of Danville’s work has a powerful presence that commands a significant amount of space to be properly viewed. At first blush some of these primordial and reverberating forms seem minimal in shape. However, as one contemplates the work, with its many textures, colors and complex formal relationships, a much more sophisticated and multi-faceted intention emerges. The resulting exhibition is a satisfying amalgam of freestanding sculptures juxtaposed with three-dimensional paintings. These wall and floor pieces create a dynamic and articulate conversation and are displayed with enough breathing room to both relate to each other and exalt in their own solo spaces.
