There are smaller groundwater abstrac­ tions at Totford, Easton, Winchester and Twyford. The water quality is extremely high and little treatment is required. At Otterboume, Southern Water also abstracts up to 45 Ml/d (10 mgd) of river water. Similarly at Gaters Mill, just near the M27, Water Company abstracts up to 45 Ml/d (10 mgd). This is several kilometres downstream of Chickenhall sewage treat­ ment works, so that the effluent is well diluted by the river and is partly reabstracted. The licences which permit water to be taken at these loca­ tions are known as ‘Ijcences of Right’ because the abstractions existed before the Water Resources Act ( 1963).
