THE STORY OF ALRESFORD'S POST - AFTER 1800 By Reg Sanders The first part of this story (in Alresford Displayed 1985) ended with the entry in Post Office Minutes of the appointment of a "Post Officer" at Alresford, in 1784, and a further Minute in 1802 reporting his imminent retirement. The 1801 census shows him lodged at 25 Broad Street, now "The Old Post Office". Miss Mary Russell Mitford in "Our Village", writing in the early 1800's, describes the roads at that time as "the abyss of pulverised gravel which had the impudence to call itself a hard road . if you meet a carriage coming along the bottomless middle of the road, what a sandy whirlwind it was ... vanishing into its own dust". It was the new "Macadamised" roads, and Telford's bridges that made possible a fast Mail Coach service in a century of innovation and great change. In May 1785 the Hampshire Chronicle had reported on "Mr. Palmer's excellent plan of conveying the mails" and added "the inhabitants of Winchester and the neighbouring towns should convene meetings to apply for an extension of this Mail Coach plan to Winchester and Southampton". Only seven years later the 'Universal British Directory 1 could report "The Mail coach from London passes through ALRESFORD every morning between three and four o'clock on its journey to PCOLE, from which place it arrives every night about eleven o'clock at ALRESFORD on its way to the Bell & Crown Inn at Holborn". It added "The Post Office (at Alresford) opens at eight every morning and shuts at nine o'clock at night"! It also reported two regular daily coaches to London and three "waggoners" each week. -

Tea and cakes were provided by the Hursley band prior to the meeting. Chairman’s Welcome At 5.54pm Elizabeth Johnson welcomed the 52 members present, and visitors Coral Northeast, Janice Higgins and Guild Master Barry Fry, to the meeting. She thanked the Rev Roger Edwards for taking the service, Alec Fry for playing the organ, and Rita and Edna from the local congregation who assisted at the service. The local band were thanked for providing the tea. Apologies Apologies were received from John Croft, Graham Grant and Pam Bridger. Minutes of the last meeting The minutes of the last meeting held at Bishopstoke on the 9th November 2002, having been previously circulated, were accepted by the meeting and signed by the Chairman as an accurate record. Matters arising Peter Clarke had prepared a list of books currently held in the District Bookstall. He had also prepared a list of books which would be held in future as specimen books. Following a brief discussion it was agreed that a district officer would hold the stock of books and take them to meetings for members to look at. -

Despite the increased prominence of ecological measurement in fresh waters within recent national regulatory and legislative instruments, their assessment is still almost exclusively based on taxonomic structure. Integrated metrics of structure and function, though widely advocated, to date have not been incorporated into these bioassessment programmes. We sought to address this, by assessing community structure (macroinvertebrate assemblage composition) and ecosystem functioning (decomposition, primary production, and herbivory rates), in a series of replicated field experiments, at watercress farms on the headwaters of chalk streams, in southern England. The outfalls from watercress farms are typically of the highest chemical quality, however surveys have revealed long-term (30 years) impacts on key macroinvertebrate taxa, in particular the freshwater shrimp Gammarus pulex (L.), yet the ecosystem-level consequences remain unknown. -
