The purpose of the thesis is to supplement and further the emergence of Pentecostal theological thought by interrogating issues foundational to the formation of a Pentecostal critical feminist theology of liberation intent upon promoting the full flourishing of Pentecostal women and non-elite men as well as contributing to feminist critical theology. The corpus drawn upon will include critical and scholarly reflection from the academy and Pentecostalism. The hypothesis is that, along with problematic practices and beliefs, Pentecostalism also contains ideas and rituals with rhetorical and symbolic significance expressing liberative potential for the actual lived realities of women, individually and communally, throughout the globe. Placing these ideas and practices in a self-reflective, critical dialogue with carefully chosen conversation partners will illuminate this emancipatory potential. The goal is to explore the possibility of developing a Pentecostal feminist critical theology of liberation. ii The major scholars whose work is considered include Walter Benjamin, Max Horkheimer, Theodor Adorno, Elisabeth Schussler Fiorenza, the representatives from the Society for Pentecostal Studies and the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada. Shifts in thought involved including the differences between traditional theorizing and critical theory, critical theory of religion, feminist critical theory of religion and feminist critical theology of liberation are examined. Concrete examples of ministering women within the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada are cited. Typical explanations given for the challenges facing ministering Pentecostal women along with an argument for the need for an explicitly feminist approach are overviewed. Theoretical aspects of the project are evaluated through a discussion of the nature and power of enlightenment rationality, an examination of identity thinking and an analysis of two major sources of authority that have been used to dominate women. The significance of hope involved in the use of utopic thinking coupled with Adorno's negative dialectic in provisionally transforming Pentecostalism toward an emancipatory praxis is explored. Finally, concluding comments summarize the project and suggestions for further explorations are made. in TABLE OF CONTENTS ABSTRACT i TABLE OF CONTENTS ii CHAPTER 1. That revolution was the modern day Pentecostal movement. 1 Herbert Marcuse,

The chosen period (1992-2012) is only apparently arbitrary, since this is the period of major output of studies and research in the rapidly changing contemporary museum field. The 80s of the last century began with the affirmation of the schools of ‘museum studies’ in the Anglophone countries, as well as with the development of the Nouvelle Muséologie in France (consolidated in 1985 with the foundation of the Mouvement International pour la Nouvelle Muséologie-MINOM, as an ICOM affiliate).

  • Christianity and Feminism: a Concise History
Reclaiming and Reconciling What Was Originally Ours—Christianity and Feminism: A Concise History A Senior Project presented to the Faculty of the History Department California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Bachelor of Arts by Soquel Filice March, 2015 © 2015 Soquel Filice Filice 1 The Church has a rich and vibrant history of compassion and activism—and yes, over the years, many people have taken up the cause of women’s rights worldwide, even the label of feminist, again, precisely because of their deep Christian faith…I believe we are a part of the trajectory of the redemption story for women in our churches, in our homes, in our marriages, in our parenting, in our friendships, and in our public lives. This trajectory impacts the story of humanity. 1 –Sarah Bessey, 2013 The Christian church has a long history of theological battles discussing the nature of “biblical manhood and womanhood,” egalitarianism vs. complementarianism, and what to do if suddenly a woman decides that she wants to be a pastor instead of sitting quietly in the pews. 2 Recently, feminist ideology has been reacquainted with American Christianity, but many Americans, especially American Christian women, are not aware of how their Christian ancestors played a role in the fight for equal rights—behind the pulpit and out on the streets. In twentieth-century America, the narrative that was written about religious history, taught for many years in the education system and reinforced by societal norms, excluded women and their religious views. 3 This narrative, biased toward both male and secular perspectives, continues today, but historically, religious evangelical women were writing a different, subversive narrative to the “traditional” when they acted on their beliefs in God and social justice.

  • A Woman's Place: the Evangelical Debate Over the Role of Women In
STATEMENT DW252 A Woman’s Place: The Evangelical Debate over the Role of Women in the Church By Roland Cap Ehlke This article first appeared in the Volume 22 / Number 4 issue of the Christian Research Journal. For further information or to subscribe to the Christian Research Journal go to: http://www.equip.org/publ/ A woman’s place is in the home — that’s what they used to say. Today, few would say that. So what is a woman’s place — in society, in the home, and in the church? The question is both delicate and momentous. Are there God- ordained gender specific roles for women and men? Or are there no differences beyond the obvious biological differences? Much of the world has already settled the issue. In the United States, women’s suffrage was enacted almost a century ago. While still not a reality, equal pay for equal work has become a sine qua non of political correctness. Working moms are the norm; single mothers who are heads of households are commonplace. Indeed “half of all U. S. babies born in 1998 were to unwed mothers.”1 While we have yet to elect a woman president, there is no public debate about the appropriateness of women in politics. Then there is the church. While much of liberal Protestant Christianity has become accustomed to women in the pulpit, most conservative churches have resisted this trend. Thus British theologian Alister McGrath writes, “Feminism has come to be a significant component of modern western culture....Feminism has come into conflict with Christianity (as it has with most religions) on account of the perception that religions treat women as second- rate human beings.”2 At the turn of the century evangelicals are embroiled in an ongoing discussion about the role of women in ministry, at times heatedly so.
