It improved transport for people and goods, and resulted in prosperity to the region. It operates today much like it did then, and now is popular with tourists and locals who travel by Visitnorway.com historic boat, leisure boat, kayaks and canoes, and bicycle. - Berge Johan Dalen Hotel The idea for a hotel in Dalen came with the expansion of the Telemark Canal in 1892. Through a series of staircase locks, the canal from Skien to Norsjø was extended to reach Bandak, with the small town of Dalen as its new endpoint. The canal was referred to as the "eighth wonder" upon its completion, and the waterway saw heavy traffic. The initiative to build a luxury hotel in Dalen was taken by Skien businessman Hans Larsen along with his two associates, merchants Lars Rød and Anton Hansen from Skien and Porsgrunn respectively. The men commissioned local Porsgrunn architect Haldor Larsen Børve to build the hotel. After its opening in 1894, the hotel drew royal guests from all over Europe, playing host to the likes of King Oscar II of Sweden, Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany, King Leopold II of Belgium, King Haakon VII of Norway and his family, and several members of the British aristocracy. During the occupation of Norway in World War II, Dalen Hotel was used as a resort for Nazi officers. Most of the building's interior was stripped out and sold for parts, and the building fell into disrepair due to lack of proper maintenance. After the war, the building was bought by singer and evangelist Aage Samuelsen with the intent of restoring the hotel to its former glory. Though Samuelsen failed to raise the necessary funds to renovate the building, he gave the hotel significant press exposure, and towards the end of the 1980s restoration efforts began in earnest. The hotel was reopened once the remodeling finished in 1992. In 2000, the hotel was honored with the Europa Nostra award for outstanding conservation. Friday, July 6 Telemark B, D Breakfast at hotel. Meir sjøaure i vassdraga kring Hardangerfjorden Restaurering og habitatforbetrande tiltak i sjøaurevassdrag langs Hardangerfjorden. Sven-Helge Pedersen «Sjøaure Hardangerfjord» - for meir sjøaure i vassdraga kring Hardangerfjorden Ein interesseorganisasjon for grunneigarlag, jakt- og fiskelag i dei 10 kommunane kring Hardangerfjorden. Sjøauren – ein historisk viktig art for Hardangerbygdene A. F. Mockler-Ferryman si reiseskildring “In the Northman’s Land” (London 1896): Om Eide/Granvin: There is very fair salmon and trout fishing, and, when the river is not let, the guests at the hotel can try their luck, though, owing to the numerous salmon traps, the chances are against the angler taking any large salmon, but, still, the sea-trout are not to be despised.. Om Eidfjord: ..This, then, is the time for the sportsman, who, with a boatman af any intelligence and with the proper minnows, should manage to kill a goodly number of sea-trout in the afternoon. .. Apart from salmon fishing, I know of no greater excitement (in a mild way) than to try conclusions with a heavy sea-trout and a light rod.

Norsk Geologisk Tidsskrift,Vol. 82, pp. 119-138. Trondheim 2002, ISSN 029-196X. The Mesoproterowic Te lemark supracrustals in southern Norway have been subdivided into four groups: (l) the ca. 1500 Ma volcanic Rjukan group overlain by (2) the quartzite-dominatedSeljord group, itself overlain by (3) the ca. 1160 Ma volcanic-sedimentary Bandak group in the west and by (4) the undated Heddal group in the east. New mapping and U-Pb work provide considerable refinement to this stratigraphy. The Ljosdals vatnet porphyry near the base of the Bandak gro up has an age of 1155 ± 3 Ma age, but it overlies that part of the Seljord gro up, which was folded and eroded before deposition of the Bandak gro up. The Brunkeberg porphyry, which has previously been correlated to the Rjukan gro up, yields an identical age of 1155 ± 2 Ma. It is unconformably overlain by a quartzite, which has also been included into the Seljord group. This group must, therefore, consist of two separate successions separated by a period of folding, here referred to as the Vindeggengro up (older) and the Lifiellgro up (younger). The former represents a thick, fluvial, shallow sea sandstone - intertidal heterolithic sequence, whereas the latter is composed of a relati vely thin and mature beach-shoreline sandstone sequence.
