Pretoria. ISSN 0075-6458. By virtue of its geological history and geographical location the Soutpansberg consti- tutes a refuge for a high diversity of organisms. The Western Soutpansberg forms part of the Savanna Biome and is presently the area with the highest concentration of Nat- ural Heritage Sites in South Africa. A unique private initiative is under way to improve its national and international conservation status in a bid to conserve the mountain. A checklist of the spider species of the Western Soutpansberg collected over a five-year period is presented. Forty-six families, represented by 109 genera and 127 species have been collected. Of the species collected, 81 (64 %) were wandering spiders and 46 (36 %) web builders. The Thomisidae have the highest number of species (15) followed by the Araneidae and the Salticidae with 10 species each. Ninety-six genera are repre- sented by a single species. Ninety six percent of the species collected are new records for the area. This survey is the first for the area and forms part of the South African National Survey of Arachnida (SANSA). Dictynidae, Dysderidae, Eresidae and Filistatidae (Araneae: Arachnida) in different Indian states and union territories. None of the spider species of these families is recorded from Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, and northeast India (Arunchal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura). Two families Dictynidae and Filistatidae are represented by 16 and 13 species, respectively. Other families are very poorly represented, single species in Dysderidae and five species in Eresidae. However, the species of Eresidae are widely distributed in the country, particularly, Stegodyphus sarasinorum Karsch, 1892. Maximum number of spider species were recorded in Maharashtra (15 species) followed by Gujarat (14 species), Jammu & Kashmir (8 species), Tamil Nadu (7 species), Karnataka, Kerala and Madhya Pradesh (6 species each), Rajasthan (5 species) and less number in other states and union territories. It is represented here by two species, both restricted to opposite parts of the southern watershed of the Bahoruco Range: Charinus dominicanus Armas & Pérez, 2001 in the eastern coastal foothill (Barahona Province) and Charinus bahoruco n. sp. in an intramontane ravine of the western portion (Pedernales Province). Abstract In order to increase our arachnological knowledge of Tunisia, an updated annotated checklist was provided; this contribution is the continuity of the Bosmans's checklist initiated in 2003 to improve taxonomic and faunistic insights on spiders in Tunisia. The number of species increased from the last checklist from 355 to 410 species. The majority of species belongs to the families Gnaphosidae (45 species), Salticidae (44 species), Theridiidae (44 species), Linyphiidae (38 species), Araneidae (31 species), Lycosidae (30 species) and Thomisidae (26 species). Accepted 11 June 2008 Coarse-scale studies that focus on species distributions and richness neglect heterogeneity that may be present at finer scales. Studies of arthropod assemblage structure at fine (1 × 1 km) scales are rare, but important, because these are the spatial levels at which real world applications are viable. Here we investigate fine-scale variation in spider assemblages, comparing five representative vegetation types in the western Soutpansberg, Limpopo Province, South Africa. We assess these vegetation types in terms of their family and species composition, as well as levels of endemicity, relating these differences with vegetation structure. We inventoried 297 species (49 families) in an area less than 450 ha, as part of South African National Survey of Arachnida. Analysis of the results suggests that endemic taxa are as- sociated with Tall Forest and, to a lesser extent, Woodland. The Woodland had the highest spe- cies diversity, and much of the variation observed in spider assemblage structure is explained by these two vegetation types. -

Spiders from 58 families, 340 genera and 1238 species are precinctive in India. However, there is an urgent need to revise all these species. Key words: Precinctive spiders, India INTRODUCTION The first information on the precinctive spider fauna of India came from the female specimen of Oxyopes indicus (Walckenaer, 1805). Thereafter, the work of Sundevall (1833); Walckenaer (1841); Blackwall (1864, 1867); Simon (1864, 1885, 1887, 1888, 1889, 1892, 1893, 1895, 1897, 1900, 1901, 1902, 1905, 1906); Frauenfeld (1867); Thorell (1868, 1891); Stoliczka (1869) O. P.-Cambridge (1870, 1872, 1873, 1874, 1877, 1885 , 1890, 1892, 1896); Butler (1873); Wood Mason (1877); Keyserling (1890); Walsh, (1891); Peckham & Peckham (1895); Pocock (1895, 1899, 1900, 1901); Leardi (1901, 1902); Strand (1907, 1912); Hirst (1909); Narayan (1915) Gravely (1915, 1921, 1924, 1927, 1931, 1935); Chamberlin (1917); Hogg (1922), Hingston (1927); Sherriffs (1927); Mukerjee (1930); Reimoser (1934); Caporiacco (1934, 1935); Bhattacharya (1935); Roewer (1942) and Fage (1946) initiated the spider research during British India. These workers reported 408 spider species from India which are endemic to India. Later on, spider research was geared up in India from 1962 by the work of Tikader (1960-1991), Gajbe (1975-2008), Biswas (1984-2004) and Patel (1972-2005) who reported more than 500 spider species precinctive in India. -

Abstract Community structure of spiders in coastal habitats of a Mediterranean delta region (Nestos Delta, NE Greece).— Habitat zonation and ecology of spider assemblages have been poorly studied in Mediterranean ecosystems. A first analysis of spider assemblages in coastal habitats in the east Mediterranean area is presented. The study area is the 250 km² Nestos Delta, located in East Macedonia in the North–East of Greece. Spiders were caught in pitfall traps at 17 sites from the beginning of April to the end of June 2004. Nonparametric estimators were used to determine species richness and alpha diversity. Ordination analysis (redundancy analysis) indicated four clearly separable spider species groups (salt meadows, dunes, mea� dows and floodplain forests),along a soil salinity and moisture gradient. Based on these results we discuss the habitat preferences of these spiders and include the first ecological data on several species. The current checklist of spiders from Left-Bank Ukraine includes 741 species in 270 genera and 34 families. The families Linyphiidae (215 species, 29% of the fauna), Gnaphosidae (83 species, 11%) and Salticidae (79 species, 11%) are the most species-rich. The Linyphiidae species diversity declines from north to south – from 33% of the fauna in the forest zone to 16% of the fauna in the bunchgrass steppe subzone. In contrast, the proportion of Gnaphosidae increases from 7% to 13%, respectively. A total of 407 spider species was recorded from the forest natural zone, 515 species from the forest-steppe, 583 species from the forb-bunchgrass steppe subzone of the steppe zone and 375 species from the bunchgrass steppe subzone. In terms of administrative division, the araneofauna of the Donetsk Region is the richest with 514 species, the faunas of the Kharkiv (426 species), Luhansk (402 species) and Chernihov (391 species) regions follow it. The poorest is the Zaporizhzhia Region with 122 species. In total, spiders have been collected at 269 localities and the results have been published in 369 papers. Faunistic and ecological studies are the main directions of arachnological research in Left-Bank Ukraine.
