READING LANDSCAPES IN MEDIEVAL BRITISH ROMANCE DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Andrew Murray Richmond, M. Kiser, Adviser Dr. Richard Firth Green Dr. Ethan Knapp Dr. Karen Winstead Copyright by Andrew Murray Richmond 2015 ABSTRACT My dissertation establishes a new framework with which to interpret the textual landscapes and ecological details that permeate late-medieval British romances from the period of c.1300 – c. 1500, focusing on the ways in which such landscapes reflect the diverse experiences of medieval readers and writers. In particular, I identify and explain fourteenth- and fifteenth-century English and Scottish conceptions of the relationships between literary worlds and “real-world” locations. In my first section, I analyze the role of topography and the management of natural resources in constructing a sense of community in Sir Isumbras, William of Palerne, and Havelok the Dane, and explain how abandoned or ravaged agricultural landscapes in Sir Degrevant and the Tale of Gamelyn betray anxieties about the lack of human control over the English landscape in the wake of population decline caused by civil war, the Black Death, and the Little Ice Age. My next section examines seashores and waterscapes in Sir Amadace, Emaré, Sir Eglamour of Artois, the Awntyrs off Arthure, and the Constance romances of Chaucer and Gower. Specifically, I explain how a number of romances present the seaside as a simultaneously inviting and threatening space whose multifaceted nature as a geographical, political, and social boundary embodies the complex range of meanings embedded in the Middle English concept of “play” – a word that these texts often link with the seashore. -

Constructing the Female Subject in Anglo-Norman, Middle English and Medieval Irish Romance by Giselle Gos A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Centre for Medieval Studies University of Toronto © Copyright by Giselle Gos, 2012 Constructing the Female Subject in Anglo-Norman, Middle English and Medieval Irish Romance Giselle Gos Doctor of Philosophy Centre for Medieval Studies University of Toronto 2012 Abstract Female subjectivity remains a theoretical question in medieval romance, a genre in which the feminine and the female have often been found to exist primarily as foils for the production of masculinity and male identity, the Other against which the masculine hero is defined. Woman‘s agency and subjectivity are observed by critics most often in moments of transgression, subversion and resistance: as objects exchanged between men and signs of masculine prestige, female characters carve out their subjectivity, agency and identity in spite of, rather than with the support of, the ideological formations of romance. The following study makes a case for the existence of a female subject in medieval romance, analogous to the oft- examined male subject, a subject in both senses of the term: subjected to the dominant ideology, the subject is also enabled in its agency and authority by that ideology. I combine a feminist poststructuralist approach to discourse analysis with a comparative methodology, juxtaposing related romance texts in Anglo-Norman, Middle English and Medieval Irish under the premise that stress-points in ideological structures must be renegotiated when stories are revised and recast for new audiences. -

The protagonist, Horn, battles Saracen soldiers on three occasions, and each clash is described in blunt and harsh terms. The Saracens are portrayed as completely evil, and Horn fights them with a ferocity and cruelty that is noteworthy. The objective of each conflict is for every Saracen soldier to lie slaughtered on the field of battle – no one is supposed to escape. -

(Havelok the Dane, lines 5–6)1 This first image of Havelok the Dane in the early-fourteenth-century Middle English poem is striking because it introduces the protagonist first and fore- most as a destitute child. Doubly striking is the lack of attention these lines have drawn. Generally, editors attend to the more conventional introduc- tions of Havelok as a “god gome” or the “wicteste man at nede” (lines 7, 9).2 The critical conception that reduces Havelok the Dane to an early example of a formulaic or “popular” Middle English metrical romance has periodically obscured the poem’s particular appropriation of the medieval romance genre, that is, the alternative cultural-literary aesthetic it expresses, begin- ning with the atypical introduction of its hero.3 The hero, son of the King of Denmark, is presented to the reader first as a child, as “litel,” and, in this Middle English version, it is Havelok’s childhood—his experience of it and the narrator’s focus on it—that fills out the tale, fills the hero’s speech, and motivates his drive to reclaim his kingdom. -

The Identity-defining Role of Forgetting in Transformative Disguise in two Middle English Romances: Havelok the Dane and Sir Isumbras by Francine Harris A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Master of Arts in English Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2018 Francine Harris ii Abstract This thesis explores the interconnected processes of disguise and forgetting in two Middle English romances, Havelok the Dane and Sir Isumbras. The disguises in these two texts have a transformative function because the protagonists, while disguised, forget their identities. Because of this, these transformative disguises are immersed in the genre’s well-established narrative of identity construction. The disguise motif, though common in romance, is rarely studied as a driving force in identity transformation because it more often functions as a performative plot point. Using medieval theories of memory, forgetting, and recollection to assess how the processes of disguise and forgetting occur in the texts, my research has determined that forgetting makes the transformations into disguise more complete and that recollecting what is important for both the true and disguised identities creates an improved and changed final identity. Overall, these romances’ use of disguise, forgetting, and transformation presents forgetting as both a problem and a necessity for effecting change. iii Acknowledgements I have many people to thank for their help along the way in making this thesis successful. An analysis of the concept of kingship embodied in Havelok's development toward kingship shows that the dual concept-- theocratic and political--which was prevalent in the Pate thirteenth century (the period in which the extant form of the poem was written) is embraced by the poem. A religious reading alone is not sufficient, insofar as certain aspects of Havelok's development are not thereby explained. A political reading is needed as well. What may seem to us a contradiction is really a complementary inter-relationship. This complemen- tarity is borne out by a brief look at the political thought of the times. Insofar as Havelok exhibits aspects of rulership based on contractual agreement, Havelok --the Dane seems to be concerned with the class consciousness of the middle classes. -

Four historical romances set in England’s past – Havelok the Dane, Guy of Warwick, Of Arthur and Merlin, and Horn Childe and Maiden Rimnild – are my primary focus. The concepts of England and Englishness that emerged in the late medieval and early modern periods were not the inevitable outcome of the Middle Ages, but the result of complex mediations explored in historical romances. Historical romances offered the primary stage for popular dramatizations of a national community bound by its shared triumphant history, and it is in such romances that ethnic, regional, and national identities were forged and disseminated. -
