Constructing the Female Subject in Anglo-Norman, Middle English and Medieval Irish Romance Constructing the Female Subject in Anglo-Norman, Middle English and Medieval Irish Romance by Giselle Gos A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Centre for Medieval Studies University of Toronto © Copyright by Giselle Gos, 2012 Constructing the Female Subject in Anglo-Norman, Middle English and Medieval Irish Romance Giselle Gos Doctor of Philosophy Centre for Medieval Studies University of Toronto 2012 Abstract Female subjectivity remains a theoretical question in medieval romance, a genre in which the feminine and the female have often been found to exist primarily as foils for the production of masculinity and male identity, the Other against which the masculine hero is defined. Woman‘s agency and subjectivity are observed by critics most often in moments of transgression, subversion and resistance: as objects exchanged between men and signs of masculine prestige, female characters carve out their subjectivity, agency and identity in spite of, rather than with the support of, the ideological formations of romance. The following study makes a case for the existence of a female subject in medieval romance, analogous to the oft- examined male subject, a subject in both senses of the term: subjected to the dominant ideology, the subject is also enabled in its agency and authority by that ideology. I combine a feminist poststructuralist approach to discourse analysis with a comparative methodology, juxtaposing related romance texts in Anglo-Norman, Middle English and Medieval Irish under the premise that stress-points in ideological structures must be renegotiated when stories are revised and recast for new audiences. The principal texts considered are Roman de Horn, King Horn, Horn Childe and the Maiden Rimnild; Gamair‘s Haveloc episode, Lai ii d’Haveloc, Havelok the Dane; Gui de Warewic, Guy of Warwick, The Irish Lives of Guy of Warwick and Bevis of Hampton; The Adventures of Art, Son of Conn, Mongán’s Love for Dubh Lacha. Through close attention to textual change over time, a profound shift can be seen in the emergence of female characters which cease to be symbols, signs and objects but through a variety of discourses and narrative strategies are established as subjects in their own right. iii Acknowledgments I have a lot of people to thank.     THE AUDIENCE OF THE FAERIE QUEENE MICHAEL MURRIN THE ROMANCE FORM, used by Sidney and Spenser, 1 had an aristocratic origin and continued to advocate aristocratic values in the sixteenth century. Sidney, himself an aristocrat, writes the New Arcadia for such an audience and stresses the duels and tournament-pageants that marked courtly life. 2 Spenser tells Raleigh that he has designed The Faerie Queene "to fashion a gentleman or noble person" (2: 485). One can argue that he thus emulates the courtesy books (see Whigham 1-31) and, like Sidney, pays due attention to duels and jousts. In the words of Richard McCoy, The Faerie Queene celebrates "the chivalric glory of a militant aristocracy" (127). I will argue, however, that the romance form, especially in England, had traditionally appealed to commercial­ class as well as aristocratic interests. Merchants, Londoners, and also country people read romance, and Spenser himself came from an urban commercial-class background, though at its poorer end. 3 Scholars have long known that the middling sort of people loved romances, though recent critics, more interested in Elizabeth's court, have not discussed the matter.4 Some review of the facts, then, is in order. Before printing, chivalric romance was the favorite fiction for all social levels. 5 In The Canterbury Tales, for example, while the Knight and Squire tell romances, so do the urban Chaucer and the Wife of Bath. The English metrical romance, which Chaucer parodies in "Sir Thopas" and which some have claimed gave Spenser the ground plot for The Faerie Queene, had served a popular audience that could not read French.

They had entered Sussex from Kent on 2 May and their first experience was an affray on the Kent-Sussex border, after which a severe reprisal took place. Carpenter says, '315 archers were beheaded in the Weald in the parish of St Mary, Ticehurst, in the place called Flimwell in the presence of the king … ' After this Henry III and Prince Edward moved on to the Cistercian Robertsbridge Abbey, where they were ‘entertained’, but they demanded 500 marks (1 mark = 2/3 of one pound or 13s 4d [67p). Converted to a 2016 value one mark might be equal to £650 today) to be paid to Edward to spare the monks’ lives. The next day Abbot Reginald of Brecon and the brothers of the Benedictine Battle Abbey went out in procession to meet the king and give him a loyal welcome, but Henry was still angry and demanded 100 marks from the abbey as he said that some of its tenants had been at Ticehurst. Prince Edward demanded another 40 marks.

A large corpus of late thirteenth- through early fourteenth-century vernacular literature in Britain, in both English and Welsh, was derived from French language originals from previous centuries. These texts include mainly romances and chansons de geste, and evidence suggests that they were produced at the same time, and for the same audience, as later redactions of the texts in the original language. This evidence gives rise to the main question that drives this dissertation: what was the function of translation in a reading milieu in which translations and originals shared the same audience? Because a large number of the earliest or sole surviving translations into English from French language originals appear in Edinburgh, National Library of Scotland, Advocates’ MS 19.2.1 (the Auchinleck Manuscript), my study focuses on the translations preserved in this manuscript.

    ENGLISH ALLITERATIVE VERSE English Alliterative Verse tells the story of the medieval poetic tradition that includes Beowulf, Piers Plowman, and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, stretching from the eighth century, when English poetry first appeared in manuscripts, to the sixteenth century, when alliterative poetry ceased to be composed. Eric Weiskott draws on the study of meter to challenge the traditional division of medieval English literary history into ‘Old English’ and ‘Middle English’ periods. The two halves of the alliterative tradition, divided by the Norman Conquest of 1066, have been studied separately since the nineteenth century; this book uses the history of metrical form and its cultural meanings to bring the two halves back together. In combining literary history and metrical description into a new kind of history he calls ‘verse history,’ Weiskott reimagines the historical study of poetics. eric weiskott is Assistant Professor of English at Boston College. In addition to publishing widely on alliterative verse and early English literary history in journals such as Anglo-Saxon England, ELH, Modern Language Quarterly, Modern Philology, Review of English Studies, and Yearbook of Langland Studies, Weiskott is also a practicing poet. Furthermore, the study of material culture and what it can reveal about the past has grown in popularity over recent decades, both within academia and what is sometimes labelled ‘popular’ or ‘public’ history. In addition, the cross-fertilization of ideas among archaeologists, art historians and cultural historians has been enhanced by the ideas of social anthropologists and historical geographers.1 These approaches can be extremely fruitful when examining different social groups outside the elite; and among the areas of investigation that has benefitted is the study of gift-giving, including an exploration of the gift itself. The classic text remains Marcel Mauss’ The Gift, but valuable recent scholarship includes Arjun Appaduria’s The Social Life of Things and Natalie Davis’ The Gift.2 As well as exploring what might be seen as the final result, the acquisition of an object, there has been a realisation that perhaps even more noteworthy is the process whereby the gift(s) moves to its new owner(s).

Winstead ____________________________ Advisor English Graduate Program ABSTRACT This dissertation makes a significant contribution to postcolonial medieval studies by examining how fourteenth- and fifteenth-century Middle English authors use representations of non-Christian and interfaith marriages to enter a wider Christian European discourse centered around the threat of the religious Other. Because such marriages are not well documented historically in medieval England, my dissertation argues that their portrayal is not a reflection of actual practice, but rather a fantasy that allows these authors to engage actively in maintaining and defending the dominance of Christianity and the Catholic Church. As my readings show, these texts serve to bolster the Church’s campaign against non-Christians by moving this campaign to marriage’s domestic sphere. Marriage is thus not only politically important, as it enables alliances to be forged among kingdoms and nations; it is now also religiously important, as it becomes a means for the culture to fantasize about the extent to which Christianity can dominate. The texts I examine cover an extensive period of the later Middle Ages, ranging from 1300 to 1450; the period of one hundred fifty years indicates that authors maintained an interest in conversion as a consequence of marriage and suggests that this motif was pervasive.

Kiser, Adviser Dr. Richard Firth Green Dr. Ethan Knapp Dr. Karen Winstead Copyright by Andrew Murray Richmond 2015 ABSTRACT My dissertation establishes a new framework with which to interpret the textual landscapes and ecological details that permeate late-medieval British romances from the period of c.1300 – c. 1500, focusing on the ways in which such landscapes reflect the diverse experiences of medieval readers and writers. In particular, I identify and explain fourteenth- and fifteenth-century English and Scottish conceptions of the relationships between literary worlds and “real-world” locations. In my first section, I analyze the role of topography and the management of natural resources in constructing a sense of community in Sir Isumbras, William of Palerne, and Havelok the Dane, and explain how abandoned or ravaged agricultural landscapes in Sir Degrevant and the Tale of Gamelyn betray anxieties about the lack of human control over the English landscape in the wake of population decline caused by civil war, the Black Death, and the Little Ice Age. My next section examines seashores and waterscapes in Sir Amadace, Emaré, Sir Eglamour of Artois, the Awntyrs off Arthure, and the Constance romances of Chaucer and Gower. Specifically, I explain how a number of romances present the seaside as a simultaneously inviting and threatening space whose multifaceted nature as a geographical, political, and social boundary embodies the complex range of meanings embedded in the Middle English concept of “play” – a word that these texts often link with the seashore.
