These guidelines are designed to establish and strengthen brand equity through integrated messaging and usages for the city. This document is a guide to managing the City of Steamboat Springs’ reputation and community identity.

These efforts benefit departments and the city as a whole by standardizing materials to save time, be more efficient and share a similar look.

The brand of the City of Steamboat Springs is more than simply a location. It’s the perception of the city and what makes Steamboat Springs distinctive, different and stand out from other municipalities.

These guidelines ensure a greater level of communication success and comprehensive messaging that stays true to who we are as a city and how our neighbors, business owners and visitors relate to us, the City of Steamboat Springs.

Located in northwest Colorado, the City of Steamboat Springs was incorporated in 1900 and lies against the western flank of the Continental Divide of the Rocky Mountains. With a history rooted in the American west, this genuine and authentic community embraces a year-round mountain lifestyle; a western heritage that still holds strong generations later; an Olympian tradition spanning nearly a century; abundant outdoor recreation centered around the Yampa River, namesake mineral springs and miles of trails and open ; and a passion for taking care of its neighbors through a diversity of community organizations.

4 | Page Capitalize The name of the city should always be capitalized when used to identify the city or destination; however, city should not be capitalized when used alone.

• The City of Steamboat Springs is a proud partner of the following organizations. • The city partners with various organizations.

Geography The location of the city should be referred to as Steamboat Springs and not simply Steamboat, if possible.

Numbers Typically, numbers from one to ten should be spelled out and do not use st, th, nd, rd on dates. In addition, never use 1st Annual – should be Inaugural. After that can be referred to as 2nd Annual, 43rd Annual, etc.

Staff The employees of the city are the heart and soul of the organization and the driving force in providing the highest level of service for residents and guests. A city is only as good as its citizens and Steamboat Springs relies on the professionalism, dedication and expertise of its employees to live up to its vision and mission on a daily basis.

Community Recognition For all community recognition, the City of Steamboat Springs logo is to be used as the primary mark. It is rare that a department logo would be used, which requires advanced approval by Communications and/or the City Manager.

The City of Steamboat Springs spur logo is unique and immediately recognizable. It is a direct reflection of the staff, services and programs which set the city apart from other municipalities. This section provides specific guidelines on how to use the logo effectively and consistently with all marketing collateral related to the City of Steamboat Springs. The City of Steamboat Springs logo, seal and spur must appear in one of the following formats.

8 | Page DEPARTMENT LOGOS

The City of Steamboat Springs logo should be the primary version used for the majority of materials regardless of department. The exceptions may include Police Services, Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue, Steamboat Springs Transit and approved city designed logos, such as Howelsen Hill, Ice Complex, etc.

On the rare occasion, a department logo is necessary; then, see Communications for options and approval, which will also need to be obtained from the City Manager.

Note: Refrain from using department with name. For example, use Public Works instead of Public Works department; Steamboat Springs Police instead of Steamboat Springs Police department.

All collateral materials should include a version of the City of Steamboat Springs logo, and if not adequate space, then the seal may be used with approval. Keeping a consistent look will prevent confusion. The following outlines how the logo should NOT be used in materials.

The images portraying the City of Steamboat Springs should have a high emotional appeal and resonate with the values of the community. Ideally, it is best to use high-quality photography from a professional photographer instead of quickly taken snapshots. In addition, liability releases of individuals shown in the image are required. Avoid clothing that depicts logos of other locations or organizations, i.e. universities, ski resorts, other states or company sweatshirts.

Photos shown below are for illustrative purposes only and cannot be used without permission.

Employees: Keep in mind, every employee is an ambassador for the city. Shots featuring city employees should depict them in appropriate attire, safe working conditions and enjoying their job. Outside of headshots or group staff images, individuals should not look directly at the camera.

The city website underwent a refresh in 2018 and a new color scheme, utilizing six primary colors, was selected and applied to all pages (see below). The colors complement the city’s signature blue and gray hues. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires that colors meet a 4.5:1 contrast ratio (level AA) to be in compliance with government regulation.

The city utilizes social media sites as efficient tools to convey information, messaging, images and brand awareness. It is important that consistency is maintained for each platform and channel and that communications take place in a timely, consistent and accurate manner. In addition, too many channels will dilute audience. All images, including background, cover photo and background color should reflect the city’s vision, mission and values and utilize officially approved logos.

Communications must approve administrators for city accounts. No accounts may be created on behalf of the city or individual city departments without prior approval by Communications/City Manager. With an eye always evaluating evolving technology, the City of Steamboat Springs utilizes the following platforms and accounts as well as works with several third parties. In addition, Yelp, Nextdoor and YouTube are being monitored by staff.

Name Tags Name tags are another way to identify the city and its employees, elected and appointed officials and should be worn when attending official city events, meetings and functions. All city vehicles will carry the City Seal on the front doors that is centered and scaled appropriately. In addition, a three-digit vehicle identification number will be placed, at a minimum on the front side panel, just in front of the driver side door.

The back of the vehicle will feature the city website under the rear window or on the tail gate, a vertical city logo on the left side of the back panel and a Share the Road sticker on the driver side rear bumper.

Final discretion remains with the Fleet Superintendent on all vehicles, trailers and miscellaneous equipment.

T-Shirts: Colors should be city colors and could include City Blue w/white logo, White (2C or Blue) or Silver (Blue logo). Specific hues may be used for select departments such as Yellow (Visibility – Blue or 2C), Green w/white logo (Parks), Dark Blue w/white logo (SSFR) or Black (Police). Logo, Seal or Spur.

Polo Shirts: The two-color city logo is preferred, but one-color may be used. Use the logo color which provides the greatest contrast between the shirt and logo, with the logo on the left front of the shirt. For light colored shirts, the blue/silver or all blue is recommended. For dark shirts, the all-white logo should be used.

Hats: Can be embroidered or silk screened with the City Logo (two-color or one-color). Arched tag line (Blue, Silver or White color) is only intended for use on the back of hat.

Visibility Vests: Should carry the city seal on the back center in two-color or blue. The city vert logo may go on lower left front.

Colors: Primary and Secondary colors should be considered as the preferred options for city uniforms. See page 11.

Police/Fire: Department specific standards pertaining to uniforms should be followed.

Logo items must be reviewed and approved by Communications/Parks-Marketing.

Just as employees provide a first impression, so should city facilities – welcoming, open and accessible. The city logo in traditional blue adorns the top of specially carved wood signs.

The facility is listed below the logo and should be centered on the board and printed with the first letter of each word capitalized. It is recommended to not exceed five locations on one sign for readability.

Posters/Placards Please check with facility representative before hanging placards, posters or messages. Once approved, these materials must be placed in designated locations and use approved formats.

Fire Stations The name of the station will be listed in ALL CAPS on the building in RED similar to the color of the department emergency vehicles.
