This document is a guide to managing the City of Steamboat Springs’ reputation and community identity. These efforts benefit departments and the city as a whole by standardizing materials to save time, be more efficient and share a similar look. The brand of the City of Steamboat Springs is more than simply a location. It’s the perception of the city and what makes Steamboat Springs distinctive, different and stand out from other municipalities. These guidelines ensure a greater level of communication success and comprehensive messaging that stays true to who we are as a city and how our neighbors, business owners and visitors relate to us, the City of Steamboat Springs. 3 | Page City of Steamboat Springs Located in northwest Colorado, the City of Steamboat Springs was incorporated in 1900 and lies against the western flank of the Continental Divide of the Rocky Mountains. With a history rooted in the American west, this genuine and authentic community embraces a year-round mountain lifestyle; a western heritage that still holds strong generations later; an Olympian tradition spanning nearly a century; abundant outdoor recreation centered around the Yampa River, namesake mineral springs and miles of trails and open space; and a passion for taking care of its neighbors through a diversity of community organizations. Stewardship Teamwork Tagline We Serve The City 4 | Page Capitalize The name of the city should always be capitalized when used to identify the city or destination; however, city should not be capitalized when used alone. • The City of Steamboat Springs is a proud partner of the following organizations. • The city partners with various organizations. Geography The location of the city should be referred to as Steamboat Springs and not simply Steamboat, if possible. Numbers Typically, numbers from one to ten should be spelled out and do not use st, th, nd, rd on dates. In addition, never use 1st Annual – should be Inaugural. After that can be referred to as 2nd Annual, 43rd Annual, etc. Staff The employees of the city are the heart and soul of the organization and the driving force in providing the highest level of service for residents and guests. A city is only as good as its citizens and Steamboat Springs relies on the professionalism, dedication and expertise of its employees to live up to its vision and mission on a daily basis. Community Recognition For all community recognition, the City of Steamboat Springs logo is to be used as the primary mark. It is rare that a department logo would be used, which requires advanced approval by Communications and/or the City Manager. 5 | Page MARKS The City of Steamboat Springs spur logo is unique and immediately recognizable. It is a direct reflection of the staff, services and programs which set the city apart from other municipalities. This section provides specific guidelines on how to use the logo effectively and consistently with all marketing collateral related to the City of Steamboat Springs. The City of Steamboat Springs logo, seal and spur must appear in one of the following formats. The exceptions may include Police Services, Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue, Steamboat Springs Transit and approved city designed logos, such as Howelsen Hill, Ice Complex, etc. On the rare occasion, a department logo is necessary; then, see Communications for options and approval, which will also need to be obtained from the City Manager. Note: Refrain from using department with name. For example, use Public Works instead of Public Works department; Steamboat Springs Police instead of Steamboat Springs Police department. 9 | Page USE OF MARKS All collateral materials should include a version of the City of Steamboat Springs logo, and if not adequate space, then the seal may be used with approval. Keeping a consistent look will prevent confusion. The following outlines how the logo should NOT be used in materials. Examples: Special Events Do not alter colors Do not rotate Do not add text Do not use portions of logo Do not add extra elements Do not ‘squeeze’ or ‘stretch’. Note: Do not change the logotype in any instance of use and do not add additional text under the logo. Generally, Helvetica, Arial or Calibri serve as the primary fonts for general text and content. Tahoma, Verdana or Univers are secondary fonts and used as an alternative.
