RECREATION INFO (949) 248-3530 2 Our Town Stand Up Paddle Boarding There are a lot of reasons why we love Dana Point, one being that Dana Point o!ers access to fun things that we enjoy doing. Dana Point is perfect for all sorts of recreational activities on both land and water. One of the biggest trends hitting our community is the rise in popularity of Stand Up Paddle Boarding (SUP). SUP is a surface water sport, a variant of sur#ng where the surfer uses a paddle to move through the water while standing on a surfboard. Stand Up Paddle Boarding is derived from its Polynesian roots. The Hawaiian translation is Ku Hoe He’e Nalu; to stand, to paddle, to surf, a wave. On any day, you can walk down to Doheny State Beach or Baby Beach in the harbor and #nd people out on the water

CITY NEWS gliding along on their SUPs. Stand Up Paddle Boarding is a great way to workout while enjoying the outdoors and almost anyone can do it. And since you’re standing at your full height, you’ll enjoy excellent views of everything from sea creatures to what’s on the horizon. It’s almost like walking on water! Even though paddle boards look like oversized surfboards, you don’t need waves in order to enjoy this self-propelled sport. In fact, $at water is preferred for building your paddleboard skills. You need just a few key pieces of equipment to enjoy this sport: Stand Up Paddle Board: This is by far your most signi#cant gear investment. Sizes are based on the paddler’s weight and experience. More experienced and lighter paddlers can choose narrower boards. Novice paddlers should choose wider, $atter boards, which o!er more stability. Paddle: Stand up paddles have an angle or “elbow” in the shaft for maximum e"ciency. Choose a paddle that’s roughly 6” to 8” taller than you are (though some manufacturers recommend an 8” to 10” di!erential). PFD (Personal Flotation Device): The U.S. Coast Guard classi#es stand up paddleboards as vessels, so always wear a PFD whenever you’re paddling navigable water. Ready to get out paddling? Most surf shops that sell paddle boards also rent them, Dana Point is the home of two major SUP events: the Mickey Muñoz Mongoose Cup and the as well as o!er lessons. Renting a paddle Rainbow Sandals Gerry Lopez Battle of the Paddle California. The Mickey Muñoz Mongoose board is a great way to test out the sport Cup is held in March in conjunction with the annual Festival of the Whales and is named before you commit to buying. Contact after early surf pioneer and surfboard shaper Mickey Muñoz. Mickey currently lives in some of these local Dana Point Businesses Capistrano Beach, CA with his wife Peggy and is an avid stand up paddler (SUP). The annual for more information: Rainbow Sandals Battle of the Paddle festival is scheduled in September and features an SUP exposition, a series of races and demonstrations for all ages and skill levels. The 2012 Battle Dana Point Jet Ski th th and Kayak Center of the Paddle is set for Saturday, September 29 and Sunday, September 30 at Doheny State Shipyard Bldg, 34671 Puerto Pl, DP Beach. For the #rst time ever, Dana Point has a coordinated marketing program speci#cally crafted to promote the City as an overnight destination, thanks to the formation of the Dana Point Tourism Business Improvement District (TBID). The four largest Dana Point resorts comprise the TBID. Each of these international brands has always done well advertising its individual hotel, but since 2010 they have been working together to promote the destination of Dana Point. The TBID includes: the Doubletree Suites by Hilton Doheny Beach, Marriott Resort & Spa, Ritz-Carlton and the St. Regis Monarch Beach Resort & Spa. The resort General Managers serve as the TBID Advisory Board to direct spending and activities to promote Dana Point collectively. Funding for the TBID comes from a marketing self-assessment of $3 for each overnight room stay in the four resorts. How do you brand a place? It is an art and a science. First, Agency 51 Advertising Agency worked closely and intensely with the four resorts to de#ne the brand promise. Then, dozens of images and taglines were developed to re$ect the brand promise and the special place that is Dana Point. Once the favorites were selected, the top choice logo images and taglines were sent with the brand promise to traveler focus groups for feedback, which is where the science comes in. The valuable feedback provided quantitative evaluation of each of the top images and taglines to determine which best re$ected the brand promise of Dana Point. The new brand image and tagline is now being used to market Dana Point to targeted business and leisure markets, including a new visitor-serving website, videos and social media channels. The new website is continuously adding new content, so be sure and investigate it at www.mydanapoint.com. Tourism is the primary industry in Dana Point, and the hotels generate over 40 percent of municipal revenue and are our largest employers. In addition to hotels, visitors patronize our retail stores and restaurants as well as enjoy water activities such as #shing, whale watching, kayak rentals and sailing. Many of these employers are small businesses which provide services to visitors and residents. Overnight visitors enhance the Dana Point quality of life and resort lifestyle by supporting shops, restaurants, and other businesses that residents also enjoy. www.danapoint.org

RECREATION INFO (949) 248-3530 4 Dana Point Barbeque California State Championship

On September 28th & 29th world class barbeque chefs from all over will descend on Dana Point to compete in the 2nd Annual Dana Point BBQ Championship. In 2011, #fty teams competed for Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion honors, and this year there will be $15,000 in prize money. The event will take place at beautiful Sea Terrace Park (Niguel Road and Paci#c Coast Highway). Prize money is generated from team entries and represents a 100% payout of all fees received. The Dana Point event is sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS), a nonpro#t organization dedicated to promoting and enjoying barbeque. KCBS is the world’s largest CITY NEWS organization of barbeque and grilling enthusiasts with over 15,000 members worldwide. In addition, KCBS sanctions over 400 barbeque contests coast-to-coast throughout America. More information about KCBS and their sanctioned events nationwide can be found on their website: http://www.kcbs.us. On Friday, September 28th teams will arrive and begin setting up to prepare delectable servings of chicken, ribs, brisket, pork and desserts for judging. The contest and judging will take place on Saturday the 29th. A blind judging process is used by KCBS certi#ed BBQ judges to ensure fairness in judging. KCBS judges are trained in a manner that allows them to appropriately judge all types of barbeque, from St. Louis and Texas styles to Memphis and Carolina styles. Judges will sample and assign a point total to each entry based on appearance, taste, and texture. Points earned not only determine the winners at the Dana Point competition, but also go towards each teams’ cumulative points earned for regional and national titles such as the California BBQ Association’s Team of the Year. Luckily the judges won’t be the only ones that get to taste some of the world’s best BBQ. The public can sample various BBQ meats prepared by the competitors as part of the People’s Choice Tasting. Tasting tickets are only $2 each and get the bearer a serving of chicken, pork, ribs, or brisket with each ticket. In addition to all the great BBQ, the City of Dana Point will be partnering with the “Taste of Brew” to provide a micro-brew garden where patrons can sample special micro-brews from over 25 distributors. Proceeds from the event will bene#t the Veterans of Foreign Wars Dana Point Post 9934, 5th Marine Regiment Support Group, American Cancer Society Relay For Life, Earth Ocean Society, and Pet Project Foundation. Parking will be available at Salt Creek Beach; Strands Vista Park; Stonehill Road; and at Dana Hills High School. A free shuttle bus will run on Saturday from Strands Vista Park and Dana Hills High School to the BBQ Championship. If you would like to be a participant or just have a question, please contact the City’s Community Services & Parks Department at (949) 248-3530.
