In early 2009, the City of Dana Point, in collaboration with Dana Hills High School (DHHS), Capistrano Unified School District (CUSD) and Dana Point Police Services, introduced the Intervention Specialist Program at DHHS. The focus and goal of the program is on educating and guiding high school students, their parents and DHHS faculty towards a drug- and alcohol-free environment, and to further the reduction of risky behavior of youth in the community. The program includes an on-site intervention specialist who staffs an on campus Stop-In-Center for students who wish to discuss issues regarding substance abuse and risky behaviors. The intervention specialist also works closely with school administrators, counselors and the on-site Orange County Sheriff’s School Resource Officer. Together, they are able to assess needs and create appropriate prevention measures, education programs and resources for substance abuse and risky behaviors. Mike Darnold has served as the Intervention Specialist at DHHS since the program’s inception. The program is seen as a long term investment by all stakeholders including students, parents, DHHS faculty, CUSD, Dana Point Police Services and the City of Dana Point. By providing a safe and non-judgmental outlet, the Intervention Specialist Program has helped students feel empowered to make a difference for themselves and their peers. Since its launch, support for the Intervention Program Specialist program has grown to become an indispensable program on campus. The DHHS student body has embraced the program and has expanded outreach by forming the school club Save Our Students (S.O.S.). Students approached the school’s Intervention Specialist with the idea to start an organization at the school to promote a drug and alcohol free lifestyle. Currently S.O.S. works closely with the Intervention Specialist to help educate the community. In addition, the group has volunteered thousands of hours at various community events and at Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) sponsored programs. S.O.S. has a website that details more info about the group and its mission. The website also has information and links for both students and parents on dealing with substance abuse and other risky behaviors. Visit http://sosdp.org to learn more. www.danapoint.org

RECREATION INFO (949) 248-3530 4 CITY NEWS Dana Point Symphony 2013 Destiny Season After an extremely successful inaugural season in 2012, the Dana Point Symphony (DPSO) is set to kick off its second season on Friday, February 8, 2013. The 2013 season will once again feature phenomenal performances from a variety of soloists and artists. In addition to presenting high caliber music, the Dana Point Symphony will once again feature a visual artist exhibition at the meet-the-artist receptions after each performance. The 2013 roster of artists include Rick Delanty, Sally Strand and Ingrid Wolters. The March 8th event will also see a presentation of surfboard art with Paul Carter, Michael Brindley and Heather Ritts. In coordination with the annual Festival of the Whales, the program for the March 8, 2013 is set to be extra special by bringing opera to Dana Point. The Opera and the Ocean concert will feature a new commission from young composer Athena Adamopoulos and a new video art commission from Alisa Lapidus. The program will also see the return of soprano Victoria Robertson and violinist Mira Khomik, as well as tenor Joshua Guerrero and baritone Gregorio Gonzalez in opera aria favorites. As an exciting end to the season, the audience will participate in the “choose your finale” event, offering the audience a chance to vote on what they would like to hear in the final concert. Audience members for the first three performances will be asked to cast their vote on one of three masterworks they want to hear the DPSO perform. The mission of the Dana Point Symphony is to provide world-class classical music to Dana Point and surrounding communities, and make it accessible to everyone. The DPSO is comprised of talented members from all over southern California, including musicians from Orange, San Diego, and Los Angeles counties. Each member of the orchestra holds a unique wealth of expertise and experience on their chosen instruments. Full-time professionals in the music industry and those currently pursuing degrees in music join together to share their passion for classical symphonic music presented with the highest standards of excellence. Performances of the 2013 DPSO are scheduled for: • February 8, 2013 • March 8, 2013 • April 5, 2013 • May 31, 2013 All performances begin at 7:30 p.m. and will be held at St. Edwards Church. For more information about the 2013 DPSO season or to purchase tickets visit: www.danapointsymphony.com. www.danapoint.org 5 SPRING 2013 | CITY OF DANA POINT CITY NEWS Public Works Project Update Town Center South Gateway Project In November of 2012, the City held a groundbreaking for the Town Center South Gateway Project. The Project entails street and parkway improvements on Pacific Coast Highway at the intersection of Del Prado Avenue/Copper Lantern. Project elements include street improvements, a new concrete planter wall, signage, landscaping, removal and realignment of an existing sidewalk, asphalt removal in the existing median island, installation of cobble hardscape, water and power utility work, and installation of subsurface irrigation. Work on the project commenced in January 2013 and should be completed by early Spring 2013.

PCH Landscaped Medians Phase III Project (PCH from Selva to Blue Lantern) The City Council authorized staff to secure grant funds and move forward with the construction of the 3rd Phase of the medians on Pacific Coast Highway (PCH Landscaped Medians Phase III Project). Successful attainment of the competitive grant was predicated upon providing scenic beautification on our regional corridor, namely PCH. The scope of the project, submitted with the application, provided for a landscape design involving live palm trees, drought tolerant landscaping and cobblestone, similar to the Phase I and II Median Projects. The City secured grant funds for up to $500,000 for the project. Work commenced in January 2013 and should be completed in Spring 2013.
