The focus and goal of the program is on educating and guiding high school students, their parents and DHHS faculty towards a drug- and alcohol-free environment, and to further the reduction of risky behavior of youth in the community. The program includes an on-site intervention specialist who staffs an on campus Stop-In-Center for students who wish to discuss issues regarding substance abuse and risky behaviors. The intervention specialist also works closely with school administrators, counselors and the on-site Orange County Sheriff’s School Resource Officer. Together, they are able to assess needs and create appropriate prevention measures, education programs and resources for substance abuse and risky behaviors. Mike Darnold has served as the Intervention Specialist at DHHS since the program’s inception. The program is seen as a long term investment by all stakeholders including students, parents, DHHS faculty, CUSD, Dana Point Police Services and the City of Dana Point. By providing a safe and non-judgmental outlet, the Intervention Specialist Program has helped students feel empowered to make a difference for themselves and their peers. Since its launch, support for the Intervention Program Specialist program has grown to become an indispensable program on campus. The DHHS student body has embraced the program and has expanded outreach by forming the school club Save Our Students (S.O.S.). Students approached the school’s Intervention Specialist with the idea to start an organization at the school to promote a drug and alcohol free lifestyle. Currently S.O.S. works closely with the Intervention Specialist to help educate the community. In addition, the group has volunteered thousands of hours at various community events and at Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) sponsored programs. S.O.S. has a website that details more info about the group and its mission. The website also has information and links for both students and parents on dealing with substance abuse and other risky behaviors. The 2013 season will once again feature phenomenal performances from a variety of soloists and artists. In addition to presenting high caliber music, the Dana Point Symphony will once again feature a visual artist exhibition at the meet-the-artist receptions after each performance. The 2013 roster of artists include Rick Delanty, Sally Strand and Ingrid Wolters. The March 8th event will also see a presentation of surfboard art with Paul Carter, Michael Brindley and Heather Ritts. In coordination with the annual Festival of the Whales, the program for the March 8, 2013 is set to be extra special by bringing opera to Dana Point. The Opera and the Ocean concert will feature a new commission from young composer Athena Adamopoulos and a new video art commission from Alisa Lapidus. The program will also see the return of soprano Victoria Robertson and violinist Mira Khomik, as well as tenor Joshua Guerrero and baritone Gregorio Gonzalez in opera aria favorites.

Welcone to the year-end issue of Coast to Coast! I've been a little delayed on this issue due to having been out of town on business, as well as some family distractions, but better Nate than Lever (obscure greeting card reference). First off, I want to thank the co-editors of CTC; without them, none of this would be possible, most especially the last couple of months where real life has been impacting me way too much. Special thanks and congratulations go to Lennart; he maintained the news for me on the web page, and now he has his own Glenn Hughes web page (there is a link on our page to his and vice versa, from the news portion) with a great look to it, and of course, it has all the news you need. I wish I had a webmaster with some time on his/her hands. :) Lennart talks about his site a bit in this issue, so check it out. Thanks Lennart! Next, a random musing or two; in the past I had suggested that Glenn Hughes pair up with Queen since only he could match or exceed their prior vocal talent, and Queen would do well to fill in a set of great, rockin' musicians to give Glenn some more muscle and combined songwriting efforts (all the Queen guys are top notch song writers, in my opinion).
