If the name of the latter is not familiar to you, he is Britain’s most decorated soldier. He is also 91 years old and a veteran of the Second World War. Leon Brittan was of course best known as Home Secretary under Margaret Thatcher; he died in January this year, and like Jimmy Savile that made him fair game for any lowlife who crawled out of the woodwork, the gutter or the sewer to besmirch his good name, although in Brittan’s case the accusers appear to have crawled out of the local booby hatch. The rumours about Leon Brittan actually began way back in the 1980s. If you were around then, you may have heard that he had been arrested in Brighton for sexually abusing a child but had been released after a phone call to one of his protectors in high places.

  • Why Doesn't Anybody Write Anything About Glam Rock?
WHY DOESN'T ANYBODY WRITE ANYTHING ABOUT GLAM ROCK? Jon Stratton In discussions of post-war British youth cultures glam rock gets very little attention. For example, in their seminal work on British youth cultural forms, Hall et al (1976:54), make only one passing reference to this subculture. In a list of subcultural possessions and objects they refer to: '... the glitter costumes of the Bowrieites ... .' Similarly, Brake (l980:80) in his outlines of British post-war youth cultures gives the culture half a page while skinheads get two pages and rockers one page. Hebdige, (1979) in Subculture: the meaning of style, does spend about two and a half pages looking at glam rock but most of this space is taken up with an analysis of the images of David Bowie. Hebdige writes of Bowie that: Certainly Bowie's position was devoid of any obvious political or counter-cultural significance ... (l979:6l). And Bowie's meta-message was escape — from class, from sex, from obvious commitment — into a fantasy past ... or a science-fiction future (1979:61). What is confusing for Hebdige about glam rock soon becomes clear: In glam-rock, at least amongst those artists placed, like Bowie and Roxy Music, at the more sophisticated end of the glitter spectrum, the subversive emphasis was shifted away from class and youth onto sexuality and gender-typing (1979:61-2). On the one hand, Hebdige can write so much about Bowie because glam rock's presentation of image as image lends itself to Hebdige's dominant semiotic method of analyzing cultural texts.

  • Glam Rock by Barney Hoskyns 1
Glam Rock By Barney Hoskyns There's a new sensation A fabulous creation, A danceable solution To teenage revolution Roxy Music, 1973 1: All the Young Dudes: Dawn of the Teenage Rampage Glamour – a word first used in the 18th Century as a Scottish term connoting "magic" or "enchantment" – has always been a part of pop music. With his mascara and gold suits, Elvis Presley was pure glam. So was Little Richard, with his pencil moustache and towering pompadour hairstyle. The Rolling Stones of the mid-to- late Sixties, swathed in scarves and furs, were unquestionably glam; the group even dressed in drag to push their 1966 single "Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing in the Shadow?" But it wasn't until 1971 that "glam" as a term became the buzzword for a new teenage subculture that was reacting to the messianic, we-can-change-the-world rhetoric of late Sixties rock. When T. Rex's Marc Bolan sprinkled glitter under his eyes for a TV taping of the group’s "Hot Love," it signaled a revolt into provocative style, an implicit rejection of the music to which stoned older siblings had swayed during the previous decade. "My brother’s back at home with his Beatles and his Stones," Mott the Hoople's Ian Hunter drawled on the anthemic David Bowie song "All the Young Dudes," "we never got it off on that revolution stuff..." As such, glam was a manifestation of pop's cyclical nature, its hedonism and surface show-business fizz offering a pointed contrast to the sometimes po-faced earnestness of the Woodstock era.

  • An Investigation Into the Influence of British Newspaper Narratives on Contemporary Discourse Around Children
Title of thesis: Anatomy of an endemic juvenile panic: an investigation into the influence of British newspaper narratives on contemporary discourse around children. Candidate name: James Gordon Morrison Institution name: Goldsmiths College, University of London Degree for which submitted: PhD 1 Declaration I confirm that this thesis and the research it contains is my work alone, and that all secondary material (where used) has been fully referenced. Signed: ...................................................................................... James Morrison 2 Abstract Children occupy an ever-more prominent position in public discourse in late-modern Britain, with politicians, news media and other key definers consistently depicting childhood as inherently problematic. Popular portrayals of juveniles tend to conceive of them as being subject to multifarious ‘risks’, with younger children, in particular, considered vulnerable to all manner of threats – from illnesses and medical emergencies to technological perils to the predations of deviant elements in society. When not threatened themselves, moreover, they are frequently depicted as presenting a menace to others, in a manner redolent of earlier moral panics about subversive youth sub-cultures. Drawing on a rich literature of research into news- making, textual framing and media reception, this thesis uses a triangulated methodology to explore the interplay between contemporary newspaper journalists, their sources of news, the narratives they weave, and (actual or potential) members of their audiences. It argues that the dominant, at times paradoxical, positioning of children – by press and public alike – as either or both of victims and threats amounts to an endemic ‘juvenile panic’, which is rooted in a continuum of ambivalences about minors that can be traced through history.

  • Suffer the Little Children
Suffer the little children Introduction Suffer the children For this paper I take this quote from the ASV Bible in a different sense to its real meaning. Obviously the real interpretation of Matthew 19:14 is, ‘Let alone’ or ‘permit’. 1 However, this paper regards the real suffering of children in this corrupt society. This Bible verse is one of many that show Jesus’ concern for young children. In this he is manifesting the concern of God in general for children, hence the Lord’s condemnation in the OT of hurting children. 2 The iniquity of hurting children Since God cares for children and commands his people to be good to their children, it is anathema to hurt children; indeed this is ingrained upon the conscience of every rational person. Thus the practice of abusing children is both irrational and worthy of God’s condemnation to hell fire. Any government that presided over abusing children, or knowingly tolerated this abuse, is insane, ungodly and worthy of condemnation. The great sin of Israel One of the key reasons given in the Old Testament for Israel’s judgment and condemnation was that its idolatry from God to idols caused Israelites to sacrifice their children to Molech. Israel’s apostasy was so great that its rulers ritually killed their own children. Ritual killing of children was an evil practised by idolatrous nations and so God commanded Israel, from the beginning, never to do such a thing. Indeed, God judged the previous nations in Canaan for completing their iniquity and making their judgment certain by sacrificing their children in the fulness of their sin.

  • Where's Tommy?!
Where’s Tommy?! White and Far-Right Paeodophile Criminals Ignored Over Rochdale and Rotherham Grooming Gangs _________________________________________________________________________ ##WWHHEERREE’’SS TTOOMMMMYY??!! WHITE & FAR-RIGHT PAEDOPHILE CRIMINALS IGNORED OVER ROCHDALE AND ROTHERHAM ASIAN GROOMING GANGS __________ By Abu Baybars Britani There is much to be said about the paedophile gangs operating in the cities of Huddersfield, Rochdale and Rotherham which have been discussed much in the media of late: Huddersfield – where there was said to be the biggest ever grooming gang (of 20 men) which spanned 2004 to 2011 and involved the abuse of 22 females, who were largely in care. The ring leader was a British Indian who had converted to Sikhism in 2013. Rotherham – here abuse spanned late 1997 up until 2013. The scandal involved girls in care being abused by taxi drivers. Around 1500 girls between the ages of 11 and 16 were said to have been abused by this grooming gang. Operation Central convicted 5 men; Operation Clover convicted 18 men and 2 women while Operation Stovewood convicted 21 men, with trials ongoing. Here it was found in Lord Casey’s report that there was a bullying and sexist culture where the claims of working class females were not taken seriously. It was also thought that the Labour council there did not want to stoke community tensions. Yet Asian girls were also abused but were in fear as they felt that they would not be believed. The abuse resulted in pregnancies, miscarriages, terminations and adoptions, increasing the victims’ already traumatic experiences. Rochdale – here 9 men were convicted for sex trafficking, rape and conspiracy to engage in sex with a child in May 2012.
