Source: PerthNow ROLF Harris will no longer be the face of British paints but brand bosses claim the move has nothing to do with his arrest last month by police investigating allegations of sexual abuse against entertainers linked to the Jimmy Savile scandal. The 83-year-old entertainment veteran introduced the paint firm's marketing line, "Trust British Paints, sure can", in 1975. Two years ago he returned to the brand to work on another promotional campaign, which was designed to remind customers how its 4 Seasons paint continued to protect Australian homes. But DuluxGroup, which owns British Paints, has confirmed to Fairfax Media that there are no future plans to work with Harris. "The Rolf Harris format aired in the 1970s and was revived for a campaign about two years ago, which received a positive response from consumers and the community from a nostalgia perspective," spokeswoman Lisa Walters said. "However, we recognised that this would have limited appeal in the future, given the younger demographic for the British Paints brand. "British Paints had been working on a new product and accompanying promotional campaign," she said. Earlier in April, Britain's Channel 5 confirmed it had dropped two of Harris's TV shows, Olive the Ostrich and Rolf's Animal Clinic, from its programming schedule. Harris, who has denied any wrongdoing, is one of 12 people arrested under Operation Yewtree, the British investigation prompted by allegations against child-sex predator Jimmy Savile. He was interviewed under caution on November 29, five days after a search warrant was executed at his home, and arrested and questioned again last month. Police have said there are three categories of people subject to the investigation: Savile himself, people close to the presenter and "others". Police have not named Harris, but in March, they said the 83- year-old Berkshire man arrested and bailed until May was in the last category which "is generally people who were in the public spotlight at around that time". Operation Yewtree, was established after a TV documentary aired allegations that Savile, the former BBC disc jockey who died in 2011 aged 84, sexually abused countless children. Those arrested include former pop star Gary Glitter, DJ Dave Lee Travis, comedians Freddie Starr and Jim Davidson, and PR guru Max Clifford. All deny any wrongdoing. Former BBC driver David Smith is the only person to be charged. He's accused of sexually assaulting a teenage boy some 30 years ago. AAP .

Beyond nostalgia: writing the history of children’s media culture This short paper is based on a presentation I gave as part of a workshop at Copenhagen University in late 2014. I try to make the case for a historical approach to studying children’s media, but also point to some pitfalls and dilemmas. Several years ago, the BBC produced a short video to promote its children’s programming. It was largely an exercise in nostalgia, aimed not so much at children themselves, but at their parents. The video featured a young boy, dressed in old- fashioned school uniform, walking us through the history of children’s television since the 1950s – a seamless collection of images and clips that older adult viewers would be bound to recognise. Meanwhile, the commentary told a story about national identity, education and childhood that harked back, with some gentle irony, to a pastoral golden age. I wrote about this video at some length in the introduction to my book Small Screens: Television for Children (2002), and I was intrigued – although not surprised – to find a copy of it on a YouTube channel called ‘Cult Kids TV Corner’.1 There is a great deal at stake in the history of children’s media, and in how we tell that history, not only for academics, but for a much wider audience. Yet in the UK more recently, a rather different version of that history has emerged, with the revelation that several of the best-loved children’s TV entertainers of the 1960s and 1970s were predatory paedophiles.

It is common for complaints to be delayed through fear, trauma and an old- fashioned belief that victims will be ignored. The high-profile cases are the tip of an enormous problem. However, while victims of historic sexual abuse want criminal justice, the truth is that many will be disappointed and may have to look to the civil courts instead. In any criminal trial for past offending, the law at the time applies. Victims are encouraged to complain but sometimes the CPS has to tell them it is too late. After a delay of 30 years, it is very hard to get a criminal case off the ground. In England and Wales, for many years, the maximum sentence for indecently assaulting a female was two years, unlawful sexual intercourse was time barred after a year and violence was condoned by giving abusers the excuse of “lawful chastisement”. Weak laws effectively allowed sexual offences to be committed behind closed doors with no proper police intervention. Now, perpetrators are dead or too old and infirm to be tried or relevant records have been destroyed so cases cannot go ahead.

Statistical Bulletin Crime in England and Wales, Year Ending June 2014 Coverage: England and Wales Date: 16 October 2014 Geographical Area: Local Authority and County Theme: Crime and Justice Key points • Latest figures from the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) show that, for the offences it covers, there were an estimated 7.1 million incidents of crime against households and resident adults (aged 16 and over) in England and Wales for the year ending June 2014. This represents a 16% decrease compared with the previous year’s survey, and is the lowest estimate since the survey began in 1981. • The CSEW covers a broad range of victim based crimes and includes crimes which do not come to the attention of the police. Decreases were evident for all major crime types compared with the previous year; violence saw a 23% fall, criminal damage fell by 20%, and theft offences decreased by 12%. • In contrast, police recorded crime shows no overall change from the previous year, with 3.7 million offences recorded in the year ending June 2014. Prior to this, police recorded crime figures have shown year on year reductions since 2003/04. • The renewed focus on the quality of crime recording is likely to have prompted improved compliance with national standards in some police forces, leading to more crimes being recorded. This is thought to have particularly affected the police recorded figures for violence against the person (up 11%) and public order offences (up 6%). • The number of police recorded shoplifting offences showed a 5% increase compared with the previous year.

WHY DOESN'T ANYBODY WRITE ANYTHING ABOUT GLAM ROCK? Jon Stratton In discussions of post-war British youth cultures glam rock gets very little attention. For example, in their seminal work on British youth cultural forms, Hall et al (1976:54), make only one passing reference to this subculture. In a list of subcultural possessions and objects they refer to: '... the glitter costumes of the Bowrieites ... .' Similarly, Brake (l980:80) in his outlines of British post-war youth cultures gives the culture half a page while skinheads get two pages and rockers one page. Hebdige, (1979) in Subculture: the meaning of style, does spend about two and a half pages looking at glam rock but most of this space is taken up with an analysis of the images of David Bowie. Hebdige writes of Bowie that: Certainly Bowie's position was devoid of any obvious political or counter-cultural significance ... (l979:6l). And Bowie's meta-message was escape — from class, from sex, from obvious commitment — into a fantasy past ... or a science-fiction future (1979:61). What is confusing for Hebdige about glam rock soon becomes clear: In glam-rock, at least amongst those artists placed, like Bowie and Roxy Music, at the more sophisticated end of the glitter spectrum, the subversive emphasis was shifted away from class and youth onto sexuality and gender-typing (1979:61-2). On the one hand, Hebdige can write so much about Bowie because glam rock's presentation of image as image lends itself to Hebdige's dominant semiotic method of analyzing cultural texts.
