Lyon (Department of History, University of Chicago)Published on H- German (May, 2007) A New Theory on the Campaign that Ended the Hungarian Invasions In 955 Otto I, the ruler of the East Frankish kingdom, led an army comprised predominantly of Bavarians, Swabians, Franconians, and Bohemians against a Magyar (Hungarian) military force that had launched a raid into the south of the kingdom from the Carpathian basin. The two armies first came into contact with one another near the Lech River, in the region around Augsburg, in what is today the German state of Bavaria. Though few extant sources provide details about how the battle unfolded, it is clear that the encounter between the two sides eventually resulted in a decisive victory for Otto I. After approximately a half-century of raids into Italy and the East Frankish kingdom, the Magyars would never seriously threaten the Latin West again. Indeed, in subsequent centuries they would convert to Christianity and emerge as an important buffer between western Europe and other nomadic peoples from the steppes of Asia. For Otto I, the victory set the stage for his emergence as the dominant ruler in Latin Christendom.

THE CASES OF THE BATTLES OF PRESSBURG (907) AND LECHFELD (955) László Veszprémy Historical study of the Hungarian raids into Western Europe has to a large extent focused on their defeat at the Battle of Lechfeld (Augsburg), and tends to ignore the Battle of Pressburg in 907.1 Certainly, there are more surviving accounts of Lechfeld than any 10th century military event. It is described in detail in Gerhard’s Life of St Udalrich, Bishop of Augsburg and Widukind’s History of the Saxons.2 The events have a very clear his- torical significance: in 907, the western defences of the eastern Frankish kingdom collapsed, the Bavarians lost their lands to the east of the Enns, including Pannonia, and the Hungarians launched an almost continuous series of raids. The Hungarians’ western adventures came to an end in 955, the Hungarians voluntarily joined Christian Europe within a few decades, the victorious King Otto of Germany had himself crowned emperor, and the Holy Roman Empire was born. It is therefore interest- ing to review what subsequent chroniclers made of all this. Dat ging niet vanzelf en heeft veel inzet, doorzettingsvermogen en ook lessen uit mislukkingen gekost. In zekere zin is dit voor mij ook een rehabilitatie. Wat ik op de middelbare school heb laten liggen weet ik nu alsnog waar te maken. Het onderwerp van dit onderzoekseminar, oorlog en religie, was leerzaam, inspirerend en uitdagend. Niet alleen vanwege de raakvlakken die ik heb als defensieambtenaar maar ook mijn eigen religieuze achtergrond heeft mij met dit onderwerp verbonden. Het thema vertalen naar een onderwerp voor een scriptie vond ik een uitdaging. Onder de inspirerende leiding van dr. Meens heeft die praktische invulling vorm kunnen krijgen. Tijdens dit onderzoekseminar en de periode waarin ik deze scriptie heb geschreven heb ik naast de inspiratie en verdieping ook tegenslagen moeten verwerken. In de eerste weken werden de consequenties van de reorganisatie binnen Defensie voor mij persoonlijk duidelijk. Hoewel mijn baan behouden bleef heeft de onrust en onzekerheid invloed gehad op mijn presteren in de eerste weken. Wat me echter dieper raakte was het toch wel onverwacht snelle overlijden van mijn opa. In veel opzichten is deze man een voorbeeld voor mij geworden.

    October-December 2012 JOURNAL OF EURASIAN STUDIES Volume IV., Issue 4. _____________________________________________________________________________________ SZABÓ, Christopher The Magyar Raids: Fact and Fable Background There is no consensus on the exact starting date of the military campaigns undertaken by the Hetumoger (“Seven Magyar”) tribal confederation in the ninth and tenth centuries. Some historians begin in 862, when the first Hungarian or Magyar troops appear in the East Frank Kingdom (later Germany) as allies of the Moravians. However, as this campaign was part of the movement of the Magyar people from their former homeland of “Atelkuzu” (“Between the Rivers”) in today’s Ukraine, Moldova and Romania, into the Carpathian Basin, which would form their land for the next 1,100 years, the campaigns leading up to the so-called “Conquest” will not be dealt with here. What is important is that the movement of some 200,000 men, women and children, and maybe more, with their herds of horses; cows; camels, sheep and goats and even pigs was done in an orderly, organized fashion that needs further research. It is quite possibly the major event in Continental Europe at the end of the Ninth Century. To cover this vast movement (and how big it was can be seen by comparing it with the relatively puny American “Wagon Trains” into the West or the Boer Great Treks of South Africa) it was necessary to obtain alliances with the “Great Powers” of the day as well as smaller polities. Thus the Seven Magyars moved into Transylvania, Upper Hungary (northern Hungary, Ukraine and Slovakia) and the Great Hungarian Plain in alliance with the Byzantine Empire and the Holy Roman Empire, which at this time included the East Frankish Kingdom (East Francia) and what are now Austria, Switzerland and northern Italy.

Abstract Based on palaeoenvironmental, historical and archaeological data, the paper proposes possible climatic impacts on the history of the Avar Khaganate, which comprised the Carpathian Basin between the late 6th and the early 9th century AD. While the establishment of the Avars in East Central Europe took place within a period characterised by cold and dry climatic conditions (recently identified as “Late Antique Little Ice Age”), more stable climatic parameters may have favoured the stabilisation of Avar rule after a crisis in the aftermath of 626 AD. Data indicates growth of settlement and agricultural activity up to the mid-8th century. These developments did not necessarily strengthen central power, but may have contributed to a greater autonomy of various groups on the basis of increased resources. The Khaganate quickly disintegrated faced by the Carolingian advance of the 790s; the last decades of documented Avar presence were again accompanied by environmental vicissitudes.
