Marek Kazimierz Kamiński (1948–2020) (Witold Gieszczyński) ...... 363 Artykuły i rozprawy Echa Przeszłości XXI/1, 2020 ISSN 1509–9873 DOI 10.31648/ep.6135 Miron Wolny Uniwersytet Warmińsko-Mazurski w Olsztynie Kartagińskie oblężenie Kasylinum (216/215 p.n.e.) – rzeczywistość historyczna a arkana antycznych przekazów literackich Streszczenie: Przedmiotem rozważań w niniejszym artykule jest epizod kartagińskiego oblężenia Kasylinum (216/215 p.n.e.) odnotowany przede wszystkim przez Liwiusza, a także Frontinusa i Stra- bona. Akcja pod Kasylinum została przedstawiona w formie schlebiającej patriotycznym motywom Rzymian. Celowi temu służyło zręczne ukrywanie faktów i eksponowanie egzagerowanych akcji. Autor artykułu zastanawia się dlaczego oblężenie to trwało tak długo i pełne było sugerowanych przez źródła niepowodzeń po stronie kartagińskiej. Czy sytuacja ta może świadczyć o wodzowskiej indo- lencji Hannibala. Autor przekonuje, że tak nie było, bo chociaż kartagiński dowódca nie był szczegól- nym innowatorem w dziedzinie oblegania miast, opanował niezbędne elementy sztuki określanej jako poliorkia. Poprzez dokonanie „rozbrojenia” części rzymskich toposów i ujawnienia istotnych informa- cji, autor artykułu dochodzi do wniosku, że oblężenie Kasylinum komponowało się z celami strate- gicznymi armii kartagińskiej w Italii.     Designer Notes: East Prussia ‘14 In the middle of August 1914, the world's attention was focused directly on the Western Front where German armies were sweeping into Belgium and France. On the Eastern Front however, the Russians were on the offensive into East Prussia, an important agricultural region of the Prussian homeland, and the gateway to Berlin. The Russians planned a two pronged invasion into East Prussia: one army approaching from the Niemen River to the east and one army approaching from the Narew River to the south, both aimed at outflanking German forces located therein, and the eventual capture of the strategic city of Königsberg. In their way stood a single German army, two resolute commanders, and a well developed rail network. By the time the campaign was over both Russian armies would be almost completely destroyed and thrown out of East Prussia and the campaign itself would go on to become one of the most studied and celebrated victories in warfare.     PEREGRINUS CRACOVIENSIS Zeszyt 10, 2000 ISSN 1425−1922 Antoni Jackowski, Izabela Sołjan The Millennium of Polish Pilgrimages 1. igrations stimulated by religious motifs have played an important role wi− thin the migration processes in many countries. Peregrinations to holy pla− Mces have existed almost since the beginning of mankind. Apart from the religious values, pilgrimages have also constituted an important element in the deve− lopment of the geographical horizons of societies. Also they have always been one of the main factors determining religious culture in its broadest meaning. In Poland, the pilgrimage tradition goes back to pagan times, while the early days of Christian pilgrimages could be noted as early as the 11th century. At present, about 5−7 million people a year participate in the pilgrimage migrations. This is about 15% of the population of Poland. The pilgrims are Roman and Orthodox Catholics as well as members of the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Muslim. In the past, the pilgrimage groups included the members of Jewish congregations and during the years of partitions also the Polish Protestants. The Poles now account for more than 3−5% of the Christian pilgrims all over the world and for about 20% in Europe. At the moment, in Poland, there are more than 500 pilgrimage sanctuaries. The absolute majority (98%) of the pilgrimage centres belong to the Roman Catholic Church. Among those Catholic centres dominant position belongs to St. Mary’s sanctuaries. There are about 430 of them and out of this number 200 possess crowned effigies of Our Lady. The most important centres have acquired international fame.

In fact it has been, and still is, the host of saints, blessed and those who died with a reputation of holiness are still growing by both those who died in the distant and not−so−distant past. During the mass in which the canonization was declared of Queen Jadwiga, the great founder and benefactor of the Cracow University, Pope John Paul II expressed this statement while highlighting and praising the queen’s contribution to his former Alma Mater. “Should not Cracow”, said the Pope, “along with all of Poland, be grateful for the works of Jadwiga that have blossomed so magnificently in the lives of so many sacred students and professors? Today, these great men of God of all generations, from John Kanty and Stanisław Kazimierczyk to the blessed Józef Sebastian Pelczar and God’s Servant Józef Bilczewski, appear before us to join in our hymn of the thanksgiving to God for the fact that, owing to the generous works of Queen Jadwiga this city has become the cradle of sainthood.”1 The ceremony in which Jadwiga was declared saint, held on Cracow’s Błonia on June 8, 1997, coincided with the 600th anniversary of the Faculty of Theology which was established due to the efforts of Jadwiga and her husband Jagiełło within the Studium Generale.

And just like Abraham, every Christian who is a guest in this land journeys throughout his life towards God in ‘Heavenly Jerusalem’. The tradition of going on pilgrimages is part of a European cultural heritage inseparably connected with the Christian religion and particular holy places: Jerusalem, Rome, and Santiago de Compostela, where the relics of St James the Greater are worshipped. The Way of St James began almost two thousand years ago on the banks of the Sea of Galilee (Lake Tiberias). As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. ‘Come, follow me,’ Jesus said, ‘and I will send you out to fish for people’. At once they left their nets and followed him. Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.
